There are countries where active tracks go right in between houses and people just get up and move their tables because the train only comes on a schedule every day or so. :)
Yes but we aren’t those countries. We are better than that and must not stoop to that level. We have rules to ensure people’s safety for a reason and people coming from cultures where they aren’t present so adhere to them. Just because you cross the tracks in your own country doesn’t mean that that is accepted here. Likewise it’s our responsibility to inform those who may not know not to do that. I hope that doesn’t come across as rude, I’m trying to say this as nicely and respectfully as possible.

I can't lie, I've been tempted. The platforms are so narrow it can feel dangerous when the train is full and dumps thousands of people out who are trying to exit at these narrow stairs while other trains come in. One wrong move and you'll just fall off the tiny platform. The stairwells are also so tiny and narrow. I'd love a redesign and another centrally located train station. Maybe something further east? We should have 2-3 major regional train hubs in the city with direct access to TTC.
RM Transit always goes off about how shortsighted Metrolinx is by ignoring a Spadina and Cherry shoulder station. Splitting the Union traffic between 3 stations depending on whether riders want to visit the east, central, or west end of downtown would reduce the chances of a crush condition forming.
Absolutely! We have nothing but opportunity to improve transit in the GTHA and the broader region. I say we cancel all plans for the new highway 413 and dump all of that money into regional rail infrastructure. We should be able to get from KW to Hamilton without having to go to union. Oshawa to Barrie. Increased service across the board. Also fire the head of Metrolinx - hold them accountable for the Eglinton line debacle.

The current fleet of GO trains isn't electrified, and there's no third rail on or anywhere near the tracks shown in the video — the only active third-rail system in Toronto is the subway (lines 1, 2, and 4).
There's virtually no electrocution risk on GO transit tracks; you're supposed to avoid walking on/across GO tracks because it's common sense. At Union, a 300+ tonne train moves through the station every few minutes, and this [frequency will only increase](https://www.metrolinx.com/en/projects-and-programs/go-expansion).
I have seen at least two dozen videos for each of these scenarios:
- Stand on track for cool Instagram photo. Oops I’m a train now
- Hang out of train for cool Instagram video. Oops I’m a pole now
- Stand on top of train for cool Instagram video. Oops I’m a metal beam now
There’s a lot more education needed than “you could get electrocuted”.
That makes a lot of sense.
If you’re used to that kind of train it’s like crossing the streetcar tracks; nbd.
Edit: ugh I just watched the video and there is an employee loudly yelling at them not to cross the tracks and everybody just… keeps on crossing.
-_-
There is no risk of electrification on GO tracks, they're not electrified. When they are electrified they'll have overhead wires so the risk will still be small.
The issue is that crossing tracks at a busy station can lead to getting hit by a train.

Also that these platforms are low and not high like many European systems where they don’t allow crossing. There are still places where low platforms and just crossing is how it has to be done.
At designated crosswalks, which often have lights and/or crossing barriers. I seem to remember one of the GO stations being like this (can't remember which one).
Still have idiots who will jump down from high-level platforms either to cross or do something else - once saw a guy climb down and walk across two tracks to hold his cigarette pack up to his bro on the opposite platform. This was at a station on a curve and gradient where freight or passenger trains would come roaring past.

I don’t think the people this serves (old people who want wages low, property values high, and secure CPP payments) care what happens after they die.
They want to age in place in their million dollar homes and draw their pensions while paying the least possible amount for goods and services.

There was some guy riding his bike around the platform at Long Branch this morning. This afternoon I saw someone ride by at Union. What are people thinking?
Yes, these people are fucking idiots for crossing... In addition, Metrolinx should've had staff at the bottom of each platform stairwell, escalator and elevator to STOP more people from going up to a crowded platform. They're guilty of mishandling crowd control too!
You can’t be serious?
This is less crowded than the line 2 platform at St. George during rush hour; there’s *plenty* of space.
Plus there are signs everywhere and staff yelling at people to stop.
If signs + directions + simple regard for one’s own hide isn’t enough to stop people… idk, maybe somebody needs to get hit by a f*cking train.

Union station urgently needs a redo. This is just but manifestation that the narrow platforms need some work to deal with, we need the station improvements from the GO expansion program yesterday but perhaps they should start working on it sooner

This happens every day at Mt pleasant and other stations there is no enforcement because you would think common sence but every one **just need to do better**
I've seen people climb the fence... really dumb, these people are lucky speed limit is 10 mph at Union Station...(still a very bad idea) Mount Pleasant its 70 mph for passenger trains and 55 for freight trains... alot of stations have a speed limit of 95 mph... I've had someone cross the tracks in front of my train at Langstaff GO while going 50 mph

Perhaps Metrolinx should consider providing adequate platform space and sufficient egress points so that a full train can disgorge its passengers without causing dangerous crush conditions rather than shaming people trying to escape the crush.
A 10 car train of bi-levels can hold almost 3000 people at standing capacity so where are people supposed to go on the narrow Union platforms? It looks like movement is restricted to two single-file lines around the elevator shaft so how long will the train remain at the platform to ensure everybody has a chance to get off if a thousand people are bottle-necked and walking single-file?
The train will sit at Union for up to 15 minutes depending on the route.
I’ve been taking packed trains at union for years. I’ve never seen people cross the tracks like that. Jays games. Leafs games. Raptors games. Concerts. Thousands and thousands of commuters - never seen that.
There is zero justification for crossing the tracks like that.

They should - but it isn’t a justification for this type of behaviour. Plus I have seen it with my own eyes of people crossing tracks when crowded platform is not an issue. Just because something isn’t perfect isn’t an excuse for making up your own rules.
It's [already in progress](https://www.metrolinx.com/en/projects-and-programs/union-station/what-were-building/union-station-enhancement-project), but as with anything Metrolinx, progress has been absolutely invisible for anybody outside of Metrolinx.
The crush condition is the issue, and the platform design, with an elevator shaft in the middle of an already narrow platform acting as a bottleneck, is the reason a crush condition formed.
Ah yes. Definitely Metrolinx. Not like this is fucking Toronto where huge sports events and concerts happen weekly and what you see in this video never happens.

I don’t know how they retrofit the station for that though, without removing tracks. The system needs level boarding too so basically the whole station needs to be overhauled. Problem is it’s been in a perpetual state of overhaul for decades already!

The authorities should be able to use the many security cameras at the station to follow the suspects movements to a point where they're free of crowds and cross reference cell positioning data to get their identity. Crossing train tracks is illegal so why wouldn't they do this?

In England, their trains have faces and they talk.
and for some reason they all sound like Ringo Starr
And George Carlin!
We're not as lucky unfortunately :(
Cool, but we aren’t one of those countries
In some countries trains float on a magnetic field. :)
In some countries rapid rail transit actually means rapid
In some countries the rail trans also gets built up much faster than the crosstown
People can definitely keep living in them if this is how they want to conduct themselves

I remember the first post on world news maybe ? Everyone was trying to justify why it was safer to cross the tracks…
safer than what, not crossing the tracks?
Yes….. the argument was that due to crowding it was safer to walk across the tracks then to go up and around the stairs.

It's actually expected and that's designated crossing markings in some large asian cities
Is this statement on top of the death earlier today? People have no sense of self preservation these days

we can only dream buddy
It’s sad that a YouTuber has better ideas than the governments of Toronto and Ontario combined.
There's going to be a station on the old Unilever lands, and it will connect to the Ontario Line and streetcars.
Not to mention that the track and platform layout will be modified in the coming years at union.

My bad, I didn't fully realise they were disembarking from the train! Yikes!
I guess they figured it would be common sense.
Wishful thinking but we're WAY past that. 🤦🏽♀️
Theres a joke here linking common sense and natural selection that i cant just put my finger on 💀

NOW published my comment from the GO transit subreddit... Didn't realise I was that famous
Union station urgently needs a redo. This is just but manifestation that the narrow platforms need some work to deal with, we need the station improvements from the GO expansion program yesterday but perhaps they should start working on it sooner
They need a rail up as well. Rush hour somebody is going to fall…

This happens every day at Mt pleasant and other stations there is no enforcement because you would think common sence but every one **just need to do better**
Mount pleasant is 2 tracks and it’s fenced off on either side what r u talking about
I've seen people climb the fence... really dumb, these people are lucky speed limit is 10 mph at Union Station...(still a very bad idea) Mount Pleasant its 70 mph for passenger trains and 55 for freight trains... alot of stations have a speed limit of 95 mph... I've had someone cross the tracks in front of my train at Langstaff GO while going 50 mph

They make announcements to this effect on trains arriving at Union and there’s signs everywhere, too.

Common sense no?!?
I've been on plenty of GO Trains arriving at Union Station where even the standing capacity is full. I've never seen this before.

It's [already in progress](https://www.metrolinx.com/en/projects-and-programs/union-station/what-were-building/union-station-enhancement-project), but as with anything Metrolinx, progress has been absolutely invisible for anybody outside of Metrolinx.
the platform is fine, that's not the issue
The crush condition is the issue, and the platform design, with an elevator shaft in the middle of an already narrow platform acting as a bottleneck, is the reason a crush condition formed.
Ah yes. Definitely Metrolinx. Not like this is fucking Toronto where huge sports events and concerts happen weekly and what you see in this video never happens.

I happy you chose not to have kids and are moving to Argentina.
I don’t know how they retrofit the station for that though, without removing tracks. The system needs level boarding too so basically the whole station needs to be overhauled. Problem is it’s been in a perpetual state of overhaul for decades already!

Maybe if we had level boarding like every other train system across the world, this would be less likely to happen.

The authorities should be able to use the many security cameras at the station to follow the suspects movements to a point where they're free of crowds and cross reference cell positioning data to get their identity. Crossing train tracks is illegal so why wouldn't they do this?

I thought for sure this was going to be some sort of third rail type thing until I watched it. I doubt trains are flying through there, and it isn't a big step down. I would do the same thing.
Then you're part of the problem. If something happens, you have now fucked over. Every. Single. Person. Who is just trying to get to/from somewhere. You're being a selfish prick to save yourself a minute or two.

looks like everyone got to where they needed to go safely, im not sure why the security decided it was appropriate to get aggressive and start escalating? something off putting about that.
