I think this rollout was such a shady move. They updated the brochures and everything. I haven’t seen Mama Mia and so I’m excited to see it as part of my subscription. I’m glad you posted this to tell my partner to check his email and make sure he opts us in to Mama Mia.

tobeyornottobeybitch

I don’t see how this is shady… I mean they told you the news and had everything updated with correct info. Do you expect them to announce a show and have all the brochures/materials remain outdated with Mamma Mia to keep everyone confused?

Ok-Read3300

Burrying information about having someone opt back into (that’s key) something they already paid for in a ridiculously short amount of time isn’t shady? Hmmm.

tobeyornottobeybitch

Gurl, you didn’t say that in your post. Those shady bitches!

acwy93

I think Mirvish was having difficulty with arranging Just For One Day in time for the season announcement, which is why someone on here was told that there were multiple possibilities for the unannounced seventh show would be. Honestly I don’t care either way since I’ll see both, but I know there were some complaints since Mamma Mia was here in 2018.

Drip______

5 day notice seems so short for people that wanted to see Mamma Mia. I would put money in a couple months there will be posts about it because people didn’t see the email.

MotleyCrafts

I kept checking my inbox and didn't even see the email til today! Thankfully I switched in time (I haven't seen Mamma Mia before and wanted to take my MIL to see it)

msvaaanjie

What’s the vibe, y’all? I LOVE Mamma Mia and was super excited to see it again but would it be better to have Just For One Day in the subscription and I could buy separate tickets to Mamma Mia?

lanttro

Not about vibe, but money… I would expect Mamma Mia to sell much better than this new show. So it should be easier to get rush or other cheaper tkt options to this new show than Mamma Mia. If you want to see both, I would keep Mamma Mia in the subscription and buy single tkts to the new show later in the year.

msvaaanjie

Thank you! Yes this is exactly what I was asking, I should have been more clear! I switched to Mamma Mia.

chriswilliam95

That is exactly what my family is doing too. It's also worth noting Mamma Mia tickets go on sale May 11th to the public whereas Just For One Day tickets go on sale in the fall. So it could also make more sense financially to wait to buy tickets for Just For One Day.

lolanna330

I’d bet money that this was initially supposed to be the 7th surprise show but they weren’t able to negotiate contracts by the time they wanted to announce

scottyb83

7th show was always going to be the Great Comet but they couldn’t announce it while it was playing at different theatre.

Bavs25

Mirvish seems to be leaning in to the boomer/gen x-nostalgia genre when selecting shows to bring over from the UK. The Shark is Broken and In Dreams also felt very aimed at an older audience. Surprising, considering there’s a ton of interesting innovative work being produced across the pond at the moment.

DoolJjaeDdal

But please don’t group Gen X with Boomers

Spin_Liquid

A lot of the Mirvish subscribers are older.

Soft_Difference2030

Theatre is trying to recoup losses by pulling in the boomers. Look at how many theatres are doing Million Dollar Quartet/Jersey Boys and Beautiful

stump_84

Their subscriptions are aimed at older people with money. Most young people will do a show or two. I would also say that Six, &Juliet and Mean Girls are all aimed at younger audiences.

Bavs25

You could also add Pride & Prejudice and 42nd Street to that list.

0cominupshort0

I’m unsure to what list you’re referring since I’d place these two shows at different ends of the spectrum 😅 Mostly because Pride & Prejudice* *Sort Of was a parody and most in the audience when I saw it were millennials.

DoolJjaeDdal

And it was awesome!!! (Not a millennial)

Helpful_College6590

I don’t mind that, I love old and new musicals. I also love new musicals that use old songs.

KapinKrunch

The reviews for the new show aren’t great to say the least. Appreciate new stuff coming but just wish it was less jukebox heavy

chriswilliam95

Just For One Day is replacing Mamma Mia on the subscription season, yes. However, subscribers can fill out a form in the e-mail they received and keep Mamma Mia instead of Just For One Day. Basically, they are giving subscribers a choice. This does kind of give people the best of both worlds. There were some disappointed Mamma Mia was on subscription since it was just here, so they get a new musical they can replace it with. If there's some who want to see Mamma Mia, then they can keep Mamma Mia.

gottaplantemall

I wasn’t disappointed because it was just here - I was disappointed because I didn’t want to see it. Glad it’s gone!/optional

chriswilliam95

Very true! I get the sense (and maybe Mirvish did too) that Mamma Mia is the show most subscribers would be willing to drop in exchange for Just For One Day either because it was just here or a lack of interest. The Lion King is the headline show, so no chance Mirvish would drop that. Moulin Rouge, Beetlejuice, and Back to the Future are (to varying degrees) hyped shows that it sounds like people are excited for. So it could have come down to either Mamma Mia or Great Comet. Ultimately, Mamma Mia is going to be just about sold out for the 5 weeks it's here regardless.

Ok-Read3300

It should have been opt in to Just for One Day, not opt out of it, since Mama Mia was what people signed up for with subscription. If I missed that email and in a few months realized it I’d be pissed I’d be missing Mama Mia since I haven’t seen it! I agree it gives people more options (which is good) but the rollout and short response period is suspect.

chriswilliam95

I agree the short response period isn't great. It could be a timing thing since Mamma Mia tickets go on sale May 11th. I also wonder if the choice to opt-out comes down to challenges with billing. Those on installment plans have now paid 2/3, so they'd have to rework the billing for subscribers who added on a show. If people paid all at once, then they'd also have to then collect an added payment from them. It's not ideal at the end of the day. My family will likely keep Mamma Mia and look at buying Just For One Day tickets in the fall.

DoolJjaeDdal

I doubt they’ll get a lot of complaints about a bait and switch. A lot of people just renew their subscriptions each year and aren’t tied in to any one show. This is better for Mirvish because many people who see a lot of shows would rather see a new show. Those who only want to see a show once a year or so would more likely want to see Mamma Mia.

cjb210

I’m also confident that if you realise a bit after the deadline they will accommodate you - albeit potentially moving seats

KittyKenollie

Having seen the musical back in 2018, and the movies countless times I’m stoked for something else!

che-r-ry

I haven't seen either musical, any recommendations on which I should opt for?

uctpe251990

There is a movie for mamma Mia so I’d say just watch that and choose one more day for your sub pick

che-r-ry

Makes sense, thank you!

MissyAeo

I know a lot of people were initially unhappy with Mamma Mia being a part of the 24/25 season, so I think some people will be happy. But I definitely understand feeling surprised by the change.

firehawk12

What I wish is that bonus show tickets had the same flexibility as subscription show tickets so I can just buy a ticket and move it around. Just reading about Just For One Day and they manage to cover 35 songs into it which seems... well, a lot. But it's one jukebox musical for another at least.

DrOkayest

In a way I’m happy they are doing this. I’m seeing Mama Mia so many other places this/next year. I’ll still see it here, but happy for another show too

Ok_Abbreviations5714

Is the show any good? I know the Guardian didn't like it. I opted to keep Mama Mia because I haven't seen it and know that it's an established hit. I might buy tickets for the other show at a later date if it's decent. I hope Mirvish doesn't lose BeetleJuice or Back To The Future. Those two shows are ones that I'm really looking forward to seeing. The Lion King I'm not fussy on. I haven't seen it though.

Bavs25

Can anyone confirm if there’s any staging/scenery beyond a bandstand and LED walls? This one is looking like a pass to me: [https://youtu.be/FoNIYJlINnk?si=Hp6HU2gla-dS8LgE](https://youtu.be/FoNIYJlINnk?si=Hp6HU2gla-dS8LgE)

Outrageous_Prompt238

So the 7 shows are: Life of Pi - a meh play that failed to win any Tonys, but based on a Canadian book and movie so sure The Lion King - a Canadian production that Mirvish insists we needed because it will make them lots of money and is the "headliner" even though it's been here plenty of times Moulin Rouge - a jukebox musical that won a lot of Tonys because of the pandemic, but is still a pretty good musical (by jukebox standards) Just For One Day - another jukebox musical and nostalgia project for Bob Geldof where we get to see actors impersonate 80s pop/rockers? Beetlejuice - a risque show that is campy, but not the best quality Back to the Future - a nostalgia musical that was made for nostalgia reasons and is overall a pretty bad show Great Comet of 1812 - probably the best show on the season. I think I'll still pass and buy individual tickets to Great Comet and Beetlejuice.

lilbfromtheoc

I saw Life of Pi on broadway and thought it was fantastic. Worth seeing for the puppetry alone!

lanttro

Would you recommend mezzanine over orchestra for Life of Pi because of the floor projections? Tks!

lilbfromtheoc

Yes I think higher up is better for this one! I was front row balcony when I saw it and it was perfect

lanttro

Many tks!

argrow1

Seriously, swapping a ho hum show with a different jukebox musical still makes a dud season, while the reigning Best Musical and the last two Revival of a Musical Tony winners don't even get anything in Toronto. Yes, I am still bitter we don't get the excellent Company while Mean Girls is on its way back for a second time.

Outrageous_Prompt238

Exactly.

troll-filled-waters

I heard that Beetlejuice and Back to the Future are surprisingly good. And Life of Pi won no Tonies but it got 5 Olivier Awards.

uctpe251990

I saw back to the future. If they can successfully replicate it for a tour then it’ll be really good, probably one of the best in this season. On broadway though it pales to the rest of the big budget spectacles like Wicked, still a decent show however. The songs aren’t great but I doubt that’s what you’re going for. The special effects are what really sell it

tobeyornottobeybitch

Have you seen most of these shows? Which ones? And was curious about Life of Pi and the Live Aid musical so did a little google search: Life of Pi - won 3 Tonys. It also won 5 Olivier Awards including Best Play. Just for One Day - there are no impersonations of the singers or artists…

Haquistadore

Would you consider yourself a *fan* of theatre?

toronto34

So glad I didn't renew. This is scummy.

Helpful_College6590

Honestly I wanted to see Mamma Mia because my grandma loves it but I absolutely love Luke Shepphard, & Juliet, and In Dreams and I don’t mind the change. I might be seeing Mamma Mia separately.
