EoSD also gets boosted by a lot of hype/memes around Flandre and U.N. Owen Was Her + the SDM crew more broadly, which don't necessarily have much to do with the quality of gameplay.
With how the polls is presented as being about works, with manga and others print books in it as well, some people probably vote for some games just for their cast.

Yup, I figure that simple popularity is a big part of it, which is fine of course. I'd guess the gameplay heads are the ones voting for SA and LoLK, haha.
Generally speaking, the original Windows trilogy of TH6/7/8 (Embodiment of Scarlet Desire, Perfect Cherry Blossom, and Imperishable Night) have attained the "iconic classic" status among the fanbase. You can think of these as the Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask of Touhou in terms of how they are regarded.
Not entirely sure, but i feel like perfect cherry blossom is a pretty solid pick.
- has a additional stage other every other game.
- has characters with some of the longest staying power in the franchise.
- QoL improvements over previous game (Visable hitbox on focus)
- less abstract visuals
Idk about the fandom but for me Touhou 10 is the best with having a memorable cast, great ost with iconic boss spell cards, and beautiful background scenery and transitions. And also a great game for people who are new to touhou games.

I think touhou 9 was interesting from what I've heard, I'm new too.
