The original hole is 5/8, the washers reduced it to 1/2 on both sides. I thought they were welded or molded in, but they came out without too much trouble. I was just nervous to go at the hitch too aggressively when I'm wanting to put 7000 lbs on it right behind my family
Me neither. Glad you gave me the idea to try it, it literally didn't cross my mind. Now I'm just hoping the low payload rating is more suggestion than a hard limit, because I'm hoping to use it to drive 2 adults and 4 kids plus the camper in safety and comfort. We're using it in lieu of our f150. I'm sick of a kid jostling my elbow from the bench middle seat whole I'm driving
You’ve got a lot of rust going on there. A hammer and chisel should knock that lock washer off. Then they make two different hitch pin sizes, you’ll need the smaller size. If your hitch has the 5/8” hole just go by a new one that matches your pin size. U-Haul has them for a reasonable price. You don’t need a 5/8” pin for 6500#.
What I've read is 5/8 is required for anything above 3500. I didn't even know 1/2 pins existed until last night when I started googling around about this. There seems to be a washer on both sides. What's the likelihood that I damage the pin hole and need to replace the whole thing if I'm chipping at it?

Could it be the rust that has slightly affected the hole size?
Is that thing salvageable with all that rust?
The picture makes it look worse than it actually is. My 2013 f150 is comparably rusty, if not worse and it works fine
smack it w a hammer. the washer is stuck in the hole
So thankful to be out of the rust belt.
Looks like there’s a lock washer still in the hole… you sure that hole isn’t 5/8”?

I’ve never seen someone do that. Glad you got it figured out!

I got it. Turns out I'm just stupid. I should have known, thanks for your help
