Do any Crew Members know which regions?
Due to the voluntary recall, we know that Fuji Food Products, Inc. (also makes Okami Sushi) was the previous supplier before being recalled in 2019 and later discontinued, and they also distributed to 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Food Lion, Hannaford, Giant Eagle Supermarkets, Porkys, Bozzuto's, Supreme Lobster, and Superior Foods.
No information of who the new supplier is, but hopefully it's better than the previous?
Based on the mod post, I guess in my area, Costco and TJ's used to have the same supplier. (Okami.)
Makes sense. Both were equally terrible. Rice was like congealed Elmer's glue.
Hard pass on this new take.
I can buy a pack of frozen Japanese imitation crab sticks for around $10-$11 and make my own filling. Mayo, garlic powder, sriracha (optional), and Tobiko (optional).
Use the pre-packaged roasted salted nori sheets to eat with a spoonful of rice and filling, and avocado. I also add cucumber, just a preference. No need to make actual rolls unless you want to.
A little more work? Absolutely! Worth it? YES!
I know people hated on Costco sushi back when they had it, but I liked it - how does this compare? Does anyone know of they changed or improved the recipe?
For everyone that looks at this and thinks about picking one up, remember that if you are in a town with a Trader Joe’s, you probably have a sushi restaurant nearby and this is just one of the many things that is much better freshly made. Even if you live really far from the oceans, your local sushi joint will do it better. Do not buy this at TJ’s.
Idk why they came back they used to be terrible. Only now it’s $6?? That’s stupid i can get the sushi dude at whole foods counter to make it fresh for me for that cost
Where do you live?
In DC a large avocado roll (12 pcs) is $8.99 at Whole Foods. I’ve found smaller ones (6- 8 pieces) for 6.99. This tracks with prices I’ve seen in Seattle and it’s more expensive in NY/LA.
For any decently sized city this is a good price.
Curious for all the downvotes?
I understand that to each their own, and I’m not going to judge anyone who enjoys imitation crab meat, but I was shocked by the overwhelming number of ingredients in the meat itself.
Everything in moderation, but you raise a very valid point…
The rice was always super mushy. It was the kind of thing that falls under "I guess it's edible and therefore I will consume it" but definitely lacking on taste and texture.
I remember having TJ sushi for the first time ever back in 2010. It made me hate sushi for 8 years until I went to a japanese restaurant and loved it since
These were always so bland at my store. That’s why I stopped buying it there. And at our Ralphs they have deals so it’s cheaper and tastier than the TJ. Id even say they taste better than Sugar Fish.
People who bought these in the past, what was bad about them?
As someone who occasionally gets my sushi roll fix from Stop & Shop, I think what makes them decent is that they are made fresh on site, so the rice does not have time to dry out and harden. Since Trader Joe's is not making these on site and is getting them delivered from the warehouse, my guess is that's not the case with these?
The thing is, my Stop & Shop now charges $11.99 per container (up from $8.99), so $5.99 is appealing.
I think it's because the distance and time between manufacture and sale is much much shorter, maybe a day. Probably less ingredients too. These are most likely made several days before with lots of preservatives to get it to the store, longer transit , breaks down the rice to that solid mush.
I am in SoCal, but they showed up a few months ago! They just need more filling, especially to justify them being $6. I'd rather go to my local small business and get authentic rolls for just a little more.
As an equal opportunity sushi nut who will eat even the meh-iest of rolls, I threw mine out after one bite. I really hope they changed them but I’m not holding my breath.
The one time I tried to buy sushi from TJs the cashier warned me that it was awful and it's one thing you should never buy from TJs so I put it back lol

$5.99 doesn’t seem that good, and I highly doubt it’s any good. I can still taste that terrible sweet rice from their sushi many years ago.

nahh my local ShopRite's sushi looks better than this
absolutely not
Hell to the no
On a side note - would love if they sold imitation crab
Worst sushi that exists in this realm.

WHY?! Nobody wants this. BRING BACK THE SHRIMP NUGGETS!
The worst sushi I’ve ever had I got at trader joe’s. i’m typically a sucker for cheap sushi but the rice was criminal. never again.
So much mushy rice blech
This is cheap?
It’s the only thing I’ve ever returned.
doubt it will be in the midwest. just like the fresh rolls😭😭😭
Yeah they will not be at the warehouse that supplies to Michigan, and I assume other nearby states too
boooo. i’m michigan lol
Me too- I was really hoping to try it!
Idk why they came back they used to be terrible. Only now it’s $6?? That’s stupid i can get the sushi dude at whole foods counter to make it fresh for me for that cost
that’s true i do like whole foods sushi but its a rarity im there. too rich for my blood
Tbh for $10 I can get 2 fresh rolls from a local sushi restaurant, I’ll pass on the premade stuff.
Did they fix the sushi rice?
Too expensive, a good vegetable roll is under $4
I find that hard to believe. Unless you're in a VLCOL area.

I want to try these
There’s no reason to ever eat imitation crab meat
It's not crab meat in any way, shape, or form! I agree 100% don't do it!
Only a sith deals in absolutes
A dollar a piece is so expensive for cheap imitation crab frozen sushi lol can get a better deal at literally every grocery store
That’s funny, I live in S.F. Bay Area and can’t find in any stores, and restaurants are $$$$$
Safeway has various fresh rolls (usually 10 pieces) for $5 on Fridays! They’re pretty good, I usually get the crunchy california roll
Who asked for this?!
People who have amnesia and forgot how horrible they were. Mushhhyyy rice!
It’s only at a couple of stores, not nationwide
forget these- bring back the tofu spring rolls !!
They did! They have a cashew sauce now.
They are back but they’re still pretty bad
Of all the discontinued items they could have brought back, this is what they chose?
ewww
Oh fuck no!
Right 😂💀
Absolutely no thank you lol
Would rather get it at Vons down the road for the same price. At least that’s made fresh that day
Worst sushi rice ever
I wish soy paper was a thing. I just have a bad gag reflex for sea taste.
Foul
At almost double the price!
If you watch a video of how imitation crab meat is made, you will never eat it again. It’s up there with low quality hot dogs. Brutal
I love spam. IDGAF I’ll gobble that stuff up.
Never look at how anything meat is made or packaged :(
Never look and see how the sausage is made.
Curious for all the downvotes? I understand that to each their own, and I’m not going to judge anyone who enjoys imitation crab meat, but I was shocked by the overwhelming number of ingredients in the meat itself. Everything in moderation, but you raise a very valid point…
Ignorance is bliss
That’s fair as well :)
Why is everyone talking shit about these? I’ve never had them, but it’s fake crab meat, avocado, and rice. It’s not sushi. How bad could they be?
The rice was always super mushy. It was the kind of thing that falls under "I guess it's edible and therefore I will consume it" but definitely lacking on taste and texture.
Would you buy 7-11 sushi? This is the same thing. Only more expensive.
Well, no, but I don’t equate gas station food with Trader Joe’s food.
In this case, you should.
Only buy 7/11 sushi in Japan
It’s BAD. It’s the one TJs item that disappeared and I went “Thank god!”
Pepperidge farms remembers
Have you ever chewed a Starburst that resembles those three flavors?
Oh God…
The power of branding: “It’s from TJs, prepackaged rolls have to be good!”
I remember having TJ sushi for the first time ever back in 2010. It made me hate sushi for 8 years until I went to a japanese restaurant and loved it since
I like most TJ’s products, and don’t even mind grocery store sushi in a pinch, but these are NOT it.
That rice looks so gummy 😩
and/or dry
These were always so bland at my store. That’s why I stopped buying it there. And at our Ralphs they have deals so it’s cheaper and tastier than the TJ. Id even say they taste better than Sugar Fish.
This gave me food poisoning years ago. Never again.
Omg same!! I heaved just seeing the picture!!!
I cannot imagine these taste like food.
Agreed. I cannot do imitation crab
My thought exactly - unless they were made fresh daily like our local grocery store (with food court), the rice will dry out fast.
Oh, no - these are notoriously bad. The rice is...I can't even describe. Slimy? Mushy but also gritty? Kind of...gelatinous?
The rice was the worst rice I ever ate in my whole life
Bland. Dry. Not good.
Spongy rice that was melted together, wierd aftertaste to the imitation crab, gross avocado that didn’t taste ripe… The list goes on.
For me it was the 24 hours of vomiting.
I see everyone talking about how bad these are. Are they notably worse than other grocery store sushi like Whole Foods? I haven’t tried them.
The Ralphs in my area… the sushi is fire there. It is very good. And…you see them make it.
That is a valid point.
The rice was worse than most supermarket sushi rolls and far worse than Whole Foods.
Wow too bad 😞
Why is the rice in these packages sushi always a solid mass? That doesn't happen in Asia with convenience store sushi or onigiri.
I think it's because the distance and time between manufacture and sale is much much shorter, maybe a day. Probably less ingredients too. These are most likely made several days before with lots of preservatives to get it to the store, longer transit , breaks down the rice to that solid mush.
The sushi coming back is giving me hope that maybe they will bring back the spring rolls
It’s been back for awhile now
they already did! IMO they are too expensive for what they are
My store hasn’t gotten them yet! I’ll have to be on the lookout!
I am in SoCal, but they showed up a few months ago! They just need more filling, especially to justify them being $6. I'd rather go to my local small business and get authentic rolls for just a little more.
Nope
My immediate thought when seeing this post was “….but why” lol
As an equal opportunity sushi nut who will eat even the meh-iest of rolls, I threw mine out after one bite. I really hope they changed them but I’m not holding my breath.
Yeah the picture makes it look just as mushy and compact as before.
Is this the same quality as the sushi they sold in years past? Because they were not good at ALL lol.
Yay!! I’ve missed the veggie rolls!
These honestly look a lot better than the ones TJa used to sell. Beyond just not tasting good they were weird combinations you don’t usually find
Maybe they changed it? Because if they didn’t, it won’t last.
🤢🤢🤮🤮
Is this in west coast Trader Joe's? We don't always get the same fresh items on the east coast.
Not available in the Midwest, so east coast is questionable
Not available in the Southeast either.
that vegetable roll should be like $2. cheapest ingredients ever but anything sushi related automatically comes with an upcharge
Avocados are expensive. The amount you're getting isn't worth the value, but it's not the cheapest thing ever.
You aren’t paying for the ingredients, but the convenience.
I tried TJ sushi once and got really sick. Never again
These made me break out in hives!
The one time I tried to buy sushi from TJs the cashier warned me that it was awful and it's one thing you should never buy from TJs so I put it back lol
Those cashiers don’t play! Lol!!!
I wish there was one without avocado. Actually ripe avocado is so rare.
Yessss! I’m so excited to try these.
Don’t be.
Aw man, don’t be a buzz kill 😢
Just a fair warning.
Thanks for the warning. I was only joking with my first response. I can’t believe I got downvotes 😂
