Portugal is just such an easy going vacation, Lisbon, specifically:Ā locals super friendly, vibrant nightlife, amazing architecture, slamming food good culture/music.Ā
It's the best. I have family north of Porto, and have fallen in love with the country. I can't wait to be back to the beautiful small town on the ocean reconnecting with nature. I feel home here, it will be my fourth and fifth trip since the pandemic.
Hi! Could you help me with recommendations? I'm going to Portugal this month for 7-10 days. But I'm unfortunately dealing with some health issues from long covid and need to take it easy. I don't have a lot of energy/stamina. So I want to stay in only one or two places. Maybe take some day trips. But mostly want to be somewhere I can enjoy a cute town with good food and friendly vibes and be near trails for hiking. My husband is healthy and loves to mountain bike. So would love to be near some trails for him. Maybe by the sea. I want to do some adventuring everyday. But also have nice places to just relax and hang out and rest.
Do you recommend Porto and Lisbon? Or some smaller towns near the sea? I love the sound of that! Where do you like to stay? I'm a little nervous about making this trip with my limitations. But I'm doing somewhat better and I'm really excited to get out and live a little! I want to see the whole country! But since I can't do that right now, trying to get some recommendations to make the best of it! Thanks so much!
So I went as a layover to Lisbon to and from Rome, and it was like a xanax. Calmed by nerves of the crowds and many steps I walked from Rome, and I have a huge desire to revisit that calming feel I got from there.
The first time I went it was incredible. The 2nd time I went, I started noticing the poverty, and the insane rents a lot more. Also went to Cascais the second time and sorta preferred that.
I have a similar admiration for Lisbon and will be visiting Edinburgh this coming week. Youāre bound to love it there and I hope Edinburgh lives up to the hype, heard great things!
Make sure you go explore more of Edinburgh and not just old town/tourist area! They have incredible parks and I found the areas outside of the tourist spot to be so beautiful
Hitting Lisbon and the Algarve in September too! Hopping over to Seville for a few since it's so close,.and since it's close to Morocco... Why not take a day trip to Tangiers? Can't wait!
Lisbon native here. If they follow the usual idea that I get from tourists I talk to, it's because although Lisboa is pretty, Porto feels cozier and more friendly.
Lisbon is way bigger and (in my opinion) has a lot more to do. Porto is a good get away, a lot of stuff to do but not as much as Lisbon in my opinion; Lisbon can even be overwhelming at times, while Porto is pretty laid back. Love both though!
Yeah i much more preffered Porto, its alot smaller, contained and more easy to get around. Feels more quiet and relaxed. Think its my favourite place i visited, i could see myself living there!
When i was in Lisbon i done 50000 steps on one of the days i was there!! š¤£
Lisbon is such a beautiful city! I truly enjoyed the views of the city from Castelo de S. Jorge...
My favorite city for now is Porto. I just loved it so much! The colorful houses, the great architectures, and of course the delicious food & porto!
Portugal is one of my favorite countries. There is so much history, culture and amazing architecture in such a small country!
Been there now twice. Second time was oddly not as exciting. City felt more worn down. The food was hit or miss (and we did a lot of research). I actually enjoyed my stay in Evora much more!
We added Lisbon to a Europe itinerary in 2011 solely because my wife wanted to get her hair done at a salon there. It ended up being our favorite city of the several we visited.
At this moment, THAT city for me is Ljubljana. Visited this summer and found it immensely charming, fabulous food and wine, close access to nature, and the people we met were lovely.
Lisbon has way too many tourists (especially the old city near the moorish quarter) and is a typical city. The Belem part is way better.
Porto is way way better with its unique character. Portugal as a whole is a charm to travel to.
Lisbon is FANTASTIC, by FAR my favourite city in Europe - and Iāve been to A LOT. The cuisine is fantastic, the locals are some of the friendliest people Iāve met and the geography, architecture and overall feel of the city really bring it home for me.
In saying that, I donāt think itās a place I could live but Iād certainly go back year after year.
Just got back myself, I enjoyed it but didn't love it. I thought I would save some frustration by going off peak tourist season, but it was very crowded. I also didn't like shady people at every corner asking me if I wanted to buy coke.
Oh the usual. Unfortunately, the city lost a peak season in my opinion. Downtown area is always full of tourists, even in the winter-y months. Maybe try Porto next time?
and don't bother going to the Belem shop unless you *want* to spend an hour in line, because the tarts at the Time Out Market on the riverfront are just as good!
Have a pastel de nata from Alcoa in Chiado. Not sure about this year, but they have had several awards for their pastries, including best pastel de nata. Have a steak on the stone on casa cabaƧas in bairro alto, some grilled food in carvoaria jacto in Anjos (though Iāve heard the neighbourhood is less inviting these days). Have a stroll by the river. Time out market in the old mercado da Ribeira is nice if you are into that kind of stuff. Also Lx Factory. Have a prego somewhere, like rui dos pregos in Docas (Docks), and a bifana in Beira Gare right in front of rossio station. While you are nearby, have a ginja as well (sour cherry liqueur) at A Ginjinha, not the best in the country at all but if you never had any, itās pretty good, it is also the most popular spot. That should keep you busy for a while.
Ps: beware of taxi drivers trying to take you on the scenic route. And have some cash, many of them donāt have a way for you to pay with card.
Portugal is amazing and Lisbon and Porto are both some of the most photogenic major cities. Honestly, it seems like Lisbon was not a major tourist hub for a long time which baffles me because it offers a lot more to see than Madrid in my opinion.

I would definitely recommend Porto and Lisbon as two bases. They are the two major cities of Portugal and both are extremely picturesque. From Porto you can visit the Douro Valley wine region which is gorgeous. Thereās also the towns of Braga and Guimaraes which you can visit from Porto. From Lisbon you can take a day trip to Sintra castle and to reach the castle itās a mini hike which is not too difficult. If youāre driving between Porto and Lisbon the monastery of Batalha is on the way and itās gorgeous and one of Europes architectural hidden gems. Also since you mentioned seaside towns Cascais is very close to Lisbon and is probably a great option to chill on the pier this month. I donāt know really know much about mountain biking but Iām sure thereās some options available throughout the country? DM me if you want more details.
i really liked the look of Valletta, Malta.
also how and why did portugal get so popular? until about 5 years ago, it was off everyoneās radar, and now it seems like everyone is going or has plans to go.
Lisbon has a vibe that most other European cities donāt and I canāt put my finger on it. Yea itās full of tourists too but it seems like itās better at more naturally integrating the tourists. Itās more laid back and the perfect level of real people living their lives and fun things to do. I canāt exactly explain it.
Lisbon is a great city to visit.
Being from San Francisco most locals I met favorably compared what they know about both cities to each otherā¦.might be the hills, the food, the fado music clubs, the custard tarts, the golden red suspension bridge and especially that people vibe very similar.
I think I have a picture in every one of those streets.
I liked Lisbon, but I found it was a bit over hyped and was expecting a bit more tbh....but all that being said it was still a really nice city to visit....and cantvsay i had a bad meal there food was pretty good.
I only based my expectation on hearing a few people say Lisbon was their most favourite city in Europe/ world....so not sure what I was expecting to be honest....but either way still one of the nicer cities ive been too....
Krakow, Poland. Old medieval vibe in the city center and as you continue to move out you can see the different stages of architecture progress to the Baroque, Victorian, Soviet and then Ultra modern.
People sold Lisbon to me like it was amazing, and when I went I was SO underwhelmed by how filthy it is. Food was nice, too many hills and dirty as hell.
Fair. For me, itās the vibe, rather than the cleanliness. I mean, I can think of some cities that are spotless but aesthetically uninspiring and dull.

I was just recently in Taipei for the first time and I couldn't stop taking photos and videos. I found it so fun to look at. There's this wonderful mix of beauty and grime, chaos and order, new and old
I loved it there! Looks like we were in the same area as well. We were easily connected to the main spots and they were walking distance. We only ate halal food but there were loads of options nearby. The people were lovely and the buildings were so vibrant. I want to go back!
I just got back from a chill 3 week trip to Lisbon. I really needed a slow decompress from life in general and Portugal was exactly that.
It did end up quite cheap but only in the non touristy areas. One of the reasons I chose Lisbon was the perception of lower cost of living and while that's true anything is cheaper than NYC (where I'm from).
Overall it was a great experience and everything I needed.
I LOVED Lisbon. I just went this past February and it was just perfect. Not sure Iād enjoy it as much during the summer with all the crowds and cruise ships but the off season was magical.
Lisbon is my top 5 favourite place I've been so far, and I walked it all by pushing a stroller everywhere. Venice is probably at the top and Rome, Rhodes and Sibiu are up there too.
I love Lisbon went there as a sister vacation loved cascias. Definitely will go back. My late dad grew up in Lisbon with some famous Portuguese singers as his childhood friends. So it was so good to go and visit where he grew up.
as a brazilian, i want to visit lisbon one day. i imagine itād be like seeing the more beautiful version of my cityās centre, which has many old portuguese buildings, but all abandoned and ugly.
You should book a secret food tour if youāre there ! Our guide gave us tons of history, and took us through neighborhoods, we wouldnāt have ventured in. Also donāt go in the tower Belem. The outside is the main draw
Whereās the greenery though? Lisbon is a cool city, but feels a bit claustrophobic to be in there in a lot of the neighborhoods, including those in these pictures
Mexico City for me :)
Funnily, Lisbon was in the āpossible holidayā list but for some reason, Iām not excited about the prospect so given it a pass for now
I was there a few years ago, it's a city that has almost everything, good food, good places to visit, good climate and atmosphere in the city, good prices, and people are so friendly, I really like Lisbon too.
Lucky you. I hated my time in Lisbon. Maybe I expected more?
I thought the infrastructure was poor( in terms of dilapidation) and there was just a lack of civic cleanliness. Overgrown lawns, graffiti, homeless in tents added to the effect (dare I say charm?)
Headed west to cascais and Sintra and that was infinitely better. I wish I had skipped Lisbon and just stayed near Sintra/estoril/cascais

Most Portuguese people are fluent in English and a lot of older people are either fully fluent or get by speaking French. Most people will also speak Spanish and sorta understand Italian. Ā
They generally know a bit of English but when you have no idea what to say to them just say "Foda se caralho siiiiim", that is certainly going to break the tension.
Language was never a barrier for myself in Portugal. I think because they rely so heavily on tourism, everything was definitely favored to English speaking folks.
I love Lisbon, you definitely work off the food on those hills š„“šļø
Thatās why you eat more foodā¦ to fuel those climbs!!
For sure
Portugal is just such an easy going vacation, Lisbon, specifically:Ā locals super friendly, vibrant nightlife, amazing architecture, slamming food good culture/music.Ā

If you can check Aveiro, its really nice around this time of the year. It's between Porto and Lisbon.
Cascais is where the rich people live.
We (12 people) rented a villa in Cascais with a private pool. Was amazing.
I'm going there next week for the 5th time already because I just can't get enough of Lisbon, to be honest.
Edinburgh, Scotland. And funnily enough, Lisbon comes in second. I didnāt expect to love Lisbon as much as I did, but Iād go back in a heartbeat.
Edinburgh is my 2nd favorite city in Europe behind Prague. Lisbon is on the short list to go to next.
I have a similar admiration for Lisbon and will be visiting Edinburgh this coming week. Youāre bound to love it there and I hope Edinburgh lives up to the hype, heard great things!

I agree but I live here so Iām a little biased. Glad everyone seems to like it so much :)
Lisbon has been super high on my list to visit. I cannot wait! Great photos, makes me want to buy a ticket right now lol
literally just returned from lisbon/porto/lagos trip today ā can confirm, buy the ticket. sheās a beaut!
The kids used to say YOLO Little did they know how true that is. Don't put it off!
I love Lisbon, vital, sophisticated, earthy, beautiful - it vibrates with creative energy. I could live there.
my unhealthy ass almost died walking all those incline hills/steps in lisbon but still such a Wonderful city
Thatās a feature. You wonāt be unhealthy for long if you have to walk there every day.Ā
San SebastiƔn, Basque Country, Spain.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Austria is just stunning. Bayern/Bavaria as well.
Except when it rains. Those streets are an ice rink!
Iāve got a 15 days there in Sept. counting down the days.
From what Iāve seen, September is the way to go!!!
Hitting Lisbon and the Algarve in September too! Hopping over to Seville for a few since it's so close,.and since it's close to Morocco... Why not take a day trip to Tangiers? Can't wait!
Was there in March and barely scratched the surface. Looking forward for another trip or two in the near future.
Tallin.
I loved it but liked Porto better
I agree. Lisbon was fun but Porto was my favorite. I visited on whim and ended up in the middle of the Sao Joao festival. Best memories of my life
Why do you like Porto better? I'm considering a visit there.
Lisbon native here. If they follow the usual idea that I get from tourists I talk to, it's because although Lisboa is pretty, Porto feels cozier and more friendly.
Planning my Porto honeymoon for late September. From what I read, Porto seemed more up my alley than Lisbon.
Lisbon is way bigger and (in my opinion) has a lot more to do. Porto is a good get away, a lot of stuff to do but not as much as Lisbon in my opinion; Lisbon can even be overwhelming at times, while Porto is pretty laid back. Love both though!
Portuguese who live in the center, I think most Portuguese like Porto more
Wouldn't you say that's more to do with the idea that people from Lisbon are more arrogant and people from Porto are more friendly?
It's prettier. Like everywhere you look you think "I have to take a picture of that!"
Yeah i much more preffered Porto, its alot smaller, contained and more easy to get around. Feels more quiet and relaxed. Think its my favourite place i visited, i could see myself living there! When i was in Lisbon i done 50000 steps on one of the days i was there!! š¤£
Going there for the first time in less than two weeks!!!
Me toooooo!!!
One rule u guys need to know is that cr7 is the best football player
My wife and I just got back from Lisbon. I highly recommend a sunset cruise.
Same! This thread is getting me super hyped!
Canāt wait to check it out next March!
Lisbon is such a beautiful city! I truly enjoyed the views of the city from Castelo de S. Jorge... My favorite city for now is Porto. I just loved it so much! We went a month ago and it still feels like it was a dream. Portugal is the best.
Lisbon is that girl 100%! Canāt stop thinking about it after 8 years. I want to move there
I donāt miss the cobble stone but I loved their food.
Been there now twice. Second time was oddly not as exciting. City felt more worn down. The food was hit or miss (and we did a lot of research). I actually enjoyed my stay in Evora much more!
The city is very poorly maintained. Itās dirty, run down and trash and graffiti isnāt dealt with. Very unfortunate.
Amsterdam, Netherlands ā„ļø
Oh gosh, I love Amsterdam too. I just wish it weren't so overrun.
Youād love Norway, imo. Bergen is something else.
Youāre right Ljubljana is actually a hidden gem. The inner city is also largely car free which makes the city so calm.
Lisbon has way too many tourists (especially the old city near the moorish quarter) and is a typical city. The Belem part is way better. Porto is way way better with its unique character. Portugal as a whole is a charm to travel to.
Yeah the city dramatically changed in the last decades due to tourism unfortunately
Lisbon is FANTASTIC, by FAR my favourite city in Europe - and Iāve been to A LOT. The cuisine is fantastic, the locals are some of the friendliest people Iāve met and the geography, architecture and overall feel of the city really bring it home for me. [ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
If you get out on the street at 7am itās generally pretty quiet
Istanbul is definitely my city when it comes to looks!
Looking at those pics I can see why.
It really is
Gotta love Portuguese music too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe1o2rAFtEk
Also just fell in love with Lisbon.
Lisbon isnāt in my top three but the beauty and the food are just spectacular!
I love in Germany Heidelberg and Regensburg! I also love Budapest. And I was blown away by Kyoto!
You should checkout Marburg then. Probably my favourite German oldtown.
Did anyone else eat shit on those slippery ass sidewalks?
Yep. Walking downhill on those slippery sidewalks at 2am after a night at the bars in Bairro Alto was a dangerous undertaking.
No, luckilyā¦!!
Iām there next month for a quick first visit, staying right in town. Any must does do for a couple of days?
Eat as many pastel de natas as you can! And taste test and determine what's your favorite.
and don't bother going to the Belem shop unless you *want* to spend an hour in line, because the tarts at the Time Out Market on the riverfront are just as good!
Manteigaria were the best ones I tried when I was there
Sounds like good advice! Are Portuguese ppl friendly?
ABSOLUTELY! I only spent there on layovers, but I felt so comfortable and happy, I am planning on a return trip as my main destination.
Just don't try to speak Spanish to them lol we saw someone get roasted for it.Ā
Haha that sounds like Paris
My schoolboy French just doesnāt cut it apparently lol
They are the best !
Nice, Iāve met a few hot ones overseas before
>Are Portuguese ppl friendly? People in Porto are much friendlier than in Lisbon, but generally, yes! Enjoy your trip!
Go to Alfama (the old town). Enjoy
Have a pastel de nata from Alcoa in Chiado. Not sure about this year, but they have had several awards for their pastries, including best pastel de nata. Lisbon is fucking fantastic.
I was only in Lisbon for 20 hours on a layover, and I've always wanted to go back. Paris is the city for me.
Wow Portugal look beautiful itās my dream country to visit with Denmark
Its Granada for me, but who can forget sitting around eating grilled sardines and walking those hills of Lisbon
Seoul and Tokyo.
Lisbon is an absolute marvel, I'd love to go back there
I got back from a trip to Portugal a month ago. I loved Lisbon, I would love to go again and stay for a couple weeks.
Lisbon is my favourite city I've ever been to, it's absolutely gorgeous
Getting on a plane back to Denver from Lisbon now. Really donāt want to leave lol great shots!

>the perfect level of real people living their livesā¦ Yes! I said this to my partner. It feels like people *live* there, if that makes any sense.

Just went to Lisbon and I felt like the best food was the hole in the walls..but definitely have to know before you go
Florence, italy! It will always have a special place in my heart.
Madeira, Portugal.

lived there 3 full years... but still I prefer Porto.
Undoubtedly a beautiful city but a nightmare to get around if you are disabled.
I always loved Taiwan
Lived there for more than a year, I love it
Just had the best time in Lisbon last December! The vibes, the food, the peopleāeverything was amazing!
We are doing Porto -> Douro -> Lisbon in July for a family wedding. Taking my infant daughter with us. Cannot wait.
That's amazing. Douro isn't talked about enough, you'll love it. Just be careful cause in the summer it gets REALLY hot here
same hereā¦.the architecture, the ppl, the food, I love everything about it
I LOVED Lisbon. I just went this past February and it was just perfect. Not sure Iād enjoy it as much during the summer with all the crowds and cruise ships but the off season was magical.
Hands down my favorite country I've ever been to. Every place is great and everybody seemed very friendly.
oh i wish i can visit and travel in this place soon. i heard it is a good place.
Bruges and Sevilla for me (and I am Italian)! But havenāt visited Lisbon yet I must admit
*for us
My favorite city on Earth in terms of aesthetics is probably Prague but Lisbon is beautiful and wildly underrated.
I was there in March for my first solo trip!! Absolutely loved it and hope to visit again soon.Ā
Lisbon is my top 5 favourite place I've been so far, and I walked it all by pushing a stroller everywhere. Venice is probably at the top and Rome, Rhodes and Sibiu are up there too.
Itās alright.
Going Lisbon in July for the first time, not sure what to expect to be honest.
Hills. Lots of them.
Haha doesn't bother me, I like my long walks/runs.
Iām here right now, it really is incredibly beautiful.
Looks like a ghost town
Boy, Lisbon Ohio surely does not disappoint...
I love Lisbon went there as a sister vacation loved cascias. Definitely will go back. My late dad grew up in Lisbon with some famous Portuguese singers as his childhood friends. So it was so good to go and visit where he grew up.
Also that city for me, every day I think about uprooting my life to move there.
Split, Croatia!
Well guys, I was born in Lisbon and I can only say how proud I feel reading your comments. Thank you very much
Funny thing is: Ouro Preto, Brazil looks like Lisbon but older. Also incredible city.
Just visited Lisbon. It was absolutely amazing. First time in Europe from the U.S. and I will definitely be back
Mine are Amsterdam, Vancouver, and San Francisco (at least in the western world)
as a brazilian, i want to visit lisbon one day. i imagine itād be like seeing the more beautiful version of my cityās centre, which has many old portuguese buildings, but all abandoned and ugly.
Love love love Lisbon!!!
You should book a secret food tour if youāre there ! Our guide gave us tons of history, and took us through neighborhoods, we wouldnāt have ventured in. Also donāt go in the tower Belem. The outside is the main draw
Itās Seville for me, wasnāt a fan of Lisbon but I can see why others would like it.
Seville is stunning, too.
Nice/Cote dāAzur/Eze Kyoto Cusco
When it comes to looks for me the cities are Istanbul and Tbilisi.
Whereās the greenery though? Lisbon is a cool city, but feels a bit claustrophobic to be in there in a lot of the neighborhoods, including those in these pictures
Mexico City for me :) Funnily, Lisbon was in the āpossible holidayā list but for some reason, Iām not excited about the prospect so given it a pass for now
Is this scene from Bourne supremacy?
For me too!
I was there a few years ago, it's a city that has almost everything, good food, good places to visit, good climate and atmosphere in the city, good prices, and people are so friendly, I really like Lisbon too.
Went with six friends for my 40th birthday last year. It was magical. We all fell in love. Favorite city in Europe, for sure.
I canāt wait to go next week!!
Considering a trip in mid October- reading all the comments Iām getting psyched to pull the trigger - thanks for all the information and ideas
I proposed to my fiancƩe there!!!!!
I love Lisbon so much I canāt wait to go back! š«¶š¾
Not to be mean but looks pretty ugly
Itās not mean. Everyoneās entitled to their opinion!
Lovely pictures! For me it's Seville, beauty was everywhere I looked.
Loved Lisbon. Can't wait to go back!
Lisbon really is awesome, overall amazing cultural experience.
Itās like a whole city dedicated to Wes Anderson
Here currently and itās an incredible city!!
Have fun! āØ
Rome Italy.
Lol, funny how opinions differ. Was there for a stag do and I thought it sucked!
It was Vienna for me! I was there for less than half a day & I knew I wanted to live there!!
Everything is so dirty, worn down and covered in graffiti
Lucky you. I hated my time in Lisbon. Maybe I expected more? I thought the infrastructure was poor( in terms of dilapidation) and there was just a lack of civic cleanliness. Overgrown lawns, graffiti, homeless in tents added to the effect (dare I say charm?) Headed west to cascais and Sintra and that was infinitely better. I wish I had skipped Lisbon and just stayed near Sintra/estoril/cascais
I didnt hate it...but didn't love it either....and the food? Nope.

Beautiful
I feel stupid for asking, but how do you get around if you don't know Portuguese, do you just wing it and point at things?
Itās polite to learn a few phrases but most ppl speak English.
I think because they rely so heavily on tourism, everything was definitely favored to English speaking folks.
it's because everything is subtitled here
