I've been to 80-some countries, in terms of safety I'd put three in the top tier: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan. Edit: Actually 4, I'd put Singapore in the mix as well Edit 2: One thing to watch out for in some parts of Taiwan are macaques. They can be assholes

Breakingupwithfatty

Thank you, that's good to know

Olivia_8265

Do you have any recommendations for places to visit in the European region?

ButtholeQuiver

All depends what you're into. Personally I'm partial to the Balkans

Taiwan is incredibly safe and easy to travel around. It's really easy to explore Taipei and the cities alone, a tour might be useful for some destinations but it is really easy just to use public transport there. A rental car would just be a huge pain in the ass in Taipei. There's a great MRT system and the Taxis are really inexpensive. I can't recommend Taiwan enough, it's a really great place to visit.

Thank you!

Transportation wise, Taipei has great public transit system similar to cities in Japan. It's not as extensive as Tokyo, bu the public bus system makes up for it. High speed Railway alone the west coast is very convenient to travel between cities/counties. However, once you're not in Taipei, you might be better off renting cars to get around easier.

Gone by myself before. Taiwanese people are friendly. You are fine travelling with your family group. I never been to Japan but Taiwan reminds me of Japan (the way portrayed by media). For instance, they will thank you after you make a purchase at a convenient store. There is no drinking allowed on the metro.

Breakingupwithfatty

Thank you.

YellowIsCoool

Safe in what sense? I've been many times, travelling with friends/solo/group, Taiwan is easy to travel around with public transport.

Breakingupwithfatty

Some countries you don't travel without a local or a guide due to kidnappings, violence , robberies etc. We like to hike/ explore, just making sure Its an.ok area to do these things with my children. We went to Hawaii awhile back, explored and were robbed and my husband beaten up by locals....I have been scared since.

LouisBelle1

Wow that’s surprising about Hawaii. Anyway, I echo what other said, Taiwan is extremely safe, one of the safest countries to visit and live in. Taiwanese people are friendly; culturally there are a lot of similarities to Japanese, but Taiwanese aren’t as reserved. Public transportation system is very good; clean, safe and efficient…and a lot cheaper than Japan. You can travel from north to south on the high speed rail in two hours on the west coast. The central and east coast are mountainous so no high speed rails but the regular trains are great too if your kids like Hello Kitty there’s a Hello Kitty train that runs between Taipei and Hualien (east coast, where you go to visit the famed Taroko Gorge)…..now if your kids really love Hello Kitty you can fly on Eva Air’s Hello Kitty planes between Taiwan and Japan. 😊

SattahipSailor

Taiwan is just as safe, if not safer, as Japan. It's not a third world country like many people perceive.

Luckycat0122

Taiwan is very safe! Public transportation is cheap and convenient and taxis/Ubers are also pretty cheap so I prbly wouldn’t rent a car. It’s pretty safe to explore alone but for convenience if you don’t want to worry about logistics there are tours that do day trips out of taipei like to jiufen that package together a couple locations and drive you around by bus.

Breakingupwithfatty

Thank you

lucapal1

As written below, its a very safe place. Its similar to Japan in that respect. In fact its similar to Japan in a lot of respects! Maybe the country in the world it is most similar to (even more than mainland China).

Setagaya-Observer

It is not like Japan in Taiwan, more like a mix of Viet-Nam and maybe Ginowan in Okinawa after 2 am! Traffic there is murderous, millions of Mopeds. Everything is cheap except Hotels! Be extra careful with your Kids because of the Traffic.

PoopEbum

This seems like a crazy question to me; it’s similar with Japan but maybe even safer. You can likely leave money on the ground in smaller areas and it will go untouched. It’s so safe it’s mind blowing.

thrunabulax

i guess the question is: is CHINA going to be doing any bad stuff while you are visiting there?

fyhf6yhj

No the moment you land in Taiwan you will be robbed and murdered on sight. Taiwan is a lawless land divided up into small fiefdoms by local warlords who seek to kidnap and specifically target families of 4 coming from Japan. I'm sorry but it's simply FAR too dangerous to go to Taiwan lest you face the risk of beheading, murder, shootouts, barrels of acid that they dump people into, and the risk of them attaching concrete bricks to your ankle and throwing you into the South China Sea. As a result it is simply too dangerous to leave Japan and you should stay there forever because the rest of the world is a lawless place where you shall only find a short, brutish, and violent end awaiting you and your family.

Breakingupwithfatty

I have traveled to many countries. I only asked because on a vacation to hawaii, we went off by ourselves and the locals robbed us and beat up my husband. When traveling with children you can never be to safe. Sounds like you know nothing about traveling🤷🏻‍♀️

https://www.internations.org/expat-insider/2022/quality-of-life-index-40243 Expat insider has Taiwan ranked at 13/52 for safety, between Sweden and Australia. Japan is 25 and USA is 36.

lucapal1

Transportation depends where you want to go exactly, but the public transport system there is very good, very comprehensive. I used it to travel all over, though mostly cities and towns rather than tiny villages.

BigManga85

Taiwan is as safe as it can get. Safer than Japan.

Relation_Familiar

Taiwan is very very safe I would think , I was there and it’s one of the if not the safest countries I’ve been to - out of about 35

LiamRocket

Definitely use the public transportation! MRT there is really convenient.

_voyageur

Lived there for a year. Taiwan is so beautiful, and it’s extremely safe. As my local friend said, ‘the only danger is the calories.’ Have a great trip.

iamhereforthegolf

Taiwan is awesome. Very much like Japan in terms of convince and ease of travel. It's a bit more ぐちゃぐちゃthan Japan and a little more weathered. Very safe and you will have no problems traveling as a family. Drink bottled water as the tap water isn't always ok to drink. Don't bother with a car. Everywhere is accessible by train or bus. The trip to 十分is well worth it. Biggest differences between Japan and Taiwan: People eat on the street. People smoke loads. People speak at you not to you. Open sewers that stink. The only thing that disappointed me about Taiwan was the night markets. They used to be really interesting and full of different small stalls selling everything under the sun, however recently many of the markets have been taken over by larger companies who seem to all sell the same junk. Street food is considerably more expensive and unless you go to a non tourist market nothing seems fresh.

RevolutionaryTone994

Taiwan is very safe to just walk around, even at night as a woman alone, so as a family you’ll be fine. Traffic is the most unsafe part on the island (scooters and taxis seem out to kill you and themselves (exaggerating ofc)) so I’d suggest using public transport where possible & only rent a car when going to a remote place. I’ve left my phone on a table at an outside restaurant along a busy street. Went back 1,5hr later panicked, was still on that same table with a family having dinner there! Watch out for stray dogs & some monkeys, overall friendly but just stay out of their way!

Breakingupwithfatty

Thank you, I'm looking forward to going.

Before covid i made a trip to Taiwan and Okinawa. Both amazing places and hope to go back soon. Safet has not been an issue at all. We passed through some seedy looking areas by night (by mistake), but even there people just smiled back or looked puzzled (i'm white tall male and my wife has tattoos). However, felt safe anyway. By using common sense, safety does not seem to be an issue at all. We used piblic transports in cities (Taipei and surrounding area, Tainan, etc.) and took the train from Kaohsiung to Taipei. No issues at all, everything was smooth and worked fine. Not sure how the public transport is more rural areas. We rented a car and driving was definitely wilder than in Okinawa (haven't driven in other parts of Japan), but still manageable and, even here, never had issues. If i remember well all rentals came in automatic and with GPS.

isabelmoisao

I've felt super safe in Taiwan (went to Taipei, Jiufen, Taichung and Kaohsiung), people only stared at me and my friend (both girls) because there aren't a lot of westerners, specially the more south you go, some took pics, but that was all, no one was ever rude or even creepy, Tawainese are the nicest and most helpfull people I've met, and Taiwan is really pretty!

[deleted]

i had a great time and used taipei bike works and tours to learn the city. super fun tour ride

easypeasylucky

Been there multiple times and I can say it’s almost as safe as Japan. The people are friendly, it’s very affordable, and the train system is excellent. I’d suggest renting a van/booking tourguide if you’re exploring areas outside Taipei though.
