I think it's always been nuts, but in the past it was a "corners of the internet" thing whereas now it's all out in the open for everyone to see. It's at a different level now for various reasons like Folkmore bringing in more fans and the media deciding Taylor Swift is THE feel good story of 2023/2024 (She boosts economies! She empowers girls! She enables dad-daughter bonding over football! and other such bullshit). Now we have younger Gen Z Swifties merging with old school millenial Swifties and there's two generations of intense stanning. Not to mention the millenial moms who are dutifully raising their little gen alphas to be Swifties. Taylor Swift's presence in our lives has become inescapable.
I think you hit the nail on the head. In my limited social media presence, I'm regularly seeing people (mainly grown ass adults) that are like advertising that their entire personality is "Taylor Swift." I've seen friends post pics on fb of them taking their kid to a Daddy/Daughter Dance that was Taylor Swift themed. I just don't recall her doing anything that was so beneficial for the human race that it justifies this level of exposure or worship. It's so bizarre to me.
I was fairly active in the Tumblr fandom up until the release of 1989. When she started the “Taylurking”, all hell broke loose. Fans started to censor themselves and police each other to prove who could be the most deserving of a like or follow from the Queen. When Reputation rolled around, it further radicalized Swifties - if you weren’t adoring and supporting Taylor 110% after the “trauma” she had experienced in 2016, you had no place in her fandom. These two things basically shaped the fandom into what it is today.
I can see that. There's more incentive to do this and join the lottery to get picked for special events with Taylor. People will do anything to get close to their idol

No in the beginning it was normal there were the few bad apples like in any fandom but it progressively got worse especially in the past few years.
