What bugs me the most about the masters controversy is she signed the deal. Might not have been a good one because what record deal is ever artist centric but she (and her dad because she was a minor) signed it. He also got paid 15 million in the sale on top of it all.
From a business standpoint, she made out like a bandit. Big Machine fronts the beginning of her career, the masters go up for sale, she chooses not to buy them and just re-record the whole catalogue.
Of course she’s a billionaire, she dodged paying 300 million for the masters herself and shamelessly rereleased them while cheapening the value of the originals.
I’ve followed Fantano for a long time and he is definitely not sexist in his reviews. There was like a four-year streak where his number one albums of the year were all by women, and there was pretty stiff competition from the men those years, too. He hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that Swifties have a limited musical vocabulary and lack the frame of reference to understand why certain criticisms are made about Taylor’s music. They also most definitely do not support other female artists, even legendary, groundbreaking women, going so far as to call Joni Mitchell an “old hag” 😭
