I’ll bet you a million they’re gonna hold off until Tron 3 premieres. They didn’t release the original Tron soundtrack on CD until maybe a year before Legacy premiered. (The composer almost was unable to recover the master tapes…they had degraded so badly over the decades.)

BBCUploads

I really hope so. I was so looking forward to getting it on Blu-Ray. Fingers crossed 🤞

BenPictures2

Weren’t the master tapes microwaved?

throw123454321purple

Baked in a food dehydrator!

Assassinhedgehog

I heard Sony will be releasing Disney back catalog movies. I assume they'll do Tron legacy 4k when that goes through.

TSLPrescott

There is a 4K release for it? I wonder if it is just an (AI?) upscale. Redoing all of the CGI would probably be a nightmare.

BBCUploads

Joseph Kosinski (Legacy Director) said on a podcast about a month ago that a 4K remaster with Dolby Atmos was on the way.

SkyWest1218

It would have to be an upscale, the original footage was all shot on Sony F35's which have a native resolution of 1920x1080.

AetaCapella

Was shot Mostly on Sony F35s I believe they did have a few other cameras in the mix too.

TSLPrescott

Yeah, that's right. The CGI wouldn't have been rendered at a higher resolution. So it'll be an upscale which means it's *probably* not worth getting if you already have the 1080p version. Especially if it is streaming, or a digital file, you're not gonna' see the difference between that and a 1080p Blu-Ray (or if you do you'll notice it looks worse). There is the chance that the upscale looks really good I guess, but given the history of this type of thing I'm not really holding my breath.

ItIsShrek

Even if the upscale doesn't look that great, it's still a movie with a lot of contrast and bright lights so hopefully the HDR will look good. Also because it was shot all digitally with a very clean look, it likely won't have as much DNR done to it. Hopefully...

4rchduk3

That’s not how HDR works. Also, from someone that owns an F35, one of the actual cameras that shot the movie, there is definitely enough resolution to do a great 4k HDR, if you use the source HD-CAM source tapes. I doubt that they made any positives that was screened in cinemas. And back in those days, I don’t think projectors could do HDR. It could also be that the project is just sitting there with all source material in AVID and someone has to click “export” on a 4K upscaled file from the raw material. Should they redo the CGI? Heck yeah, because now we can make Clu ACTUALLY look like he should look…

2160_Technic

Do you even know what HDR is?

TSLPrescott

Why would this at all insinuate that I don't know what HDR is? I'm talking exclusively about the clarity of the image, not brightness/contrast.

OokamiPrime

In Australia, we do not get any Disney physical media any more.

pancakefactory9

Well if your tv and blu ray players can run European format, give me a heads up and I can send you a copy

FusionFall

Just give us the 4K UHD release PLEASE!

Quantum_Crusher

Someone made a professional level 4k remastered years ago. I watched it, it's great. Perfect for revisiting purpose before the official 4k comes out. But I'm perfectly happy with it.

AlphaSyntauri

Might receive some downvotes for this, but the(unofficial) Hybrid Open Matte Edition is a very good ~2k transfer. It might be arguably better than any 4k release on streaming because it's uncompressed at over 25GB in size and gives you more room compared to a cropped 16:9 frame. iirc, it was combined between the IMAX scans and a special version aired a few times on Starz.

ItIsShrek

It is not uncompressed, it's made from the 1080p blu-ray (which itself is compressed, an uncompressed version would be hundreds of gigabytes), and the open matte on the Blu-ray alone is 27.84GB (though I do understand that BDs are x264 and the upscale is likely x265. Regardless, an "uncompressed" raw upscale made from the 1080p BD would still be massive. \~20GB is about the size of an average 4K streaming service quality movie, and kind of in the middle of the size of a 1080p bluray. So it's more like you're watching the kind of bitrate you'd find on a Disney+ version of the movie.

RunTillYouPuke

It's not made from bluray because bluray is cropped and open matte is not.

its_xSKYxFOXx

Wait so the Legacy that’s on Disney now is or isn’t 4k? Kinda confused on the post.

NarrowYam4754

It’s not 4K. I asked this in a post years ago (maybe lol) and people said that the movie was filmed in early digital cameras or something, and they weren’t able to pull a 4K version from that data. So now that I’m seeing this, I’m wondering what the hell is going on??

SkyWest1218

You're correct, they used Sony F35's for Legacy, which shot at 1920x1080 natively, so any 4K version would be an upscale. Whether or not it would have proper HDR is anyone's guess.

NarrowYam4754

Here’s hoping! I’m just glad to hear it’s in the works. I don’t know how long something like this would take, but hopefully we see it sooner rather than later!

NarrowYam4754

That is the most beautiful news I’ve heard in a long time! Edit: literally after I bought my oled tv, I went to Disney plus and wanted to watch Legacy. I was so sad to see it was only 1080p.

InjusticeJosh

Can’t come any sooner

TheBigGAlways369

Most definitely, heck they released Chip And Dale when the movie came out on Disney +.

Particular-Fig-6196

Do we have a release date for the Disney+ 4k version?

fortifier22

I would absolutely love to purchase a physical copy of the 4K Dolby Atmos render when it comes out! It’s sad to hear that they’re only planning on doing it for Disney+, but hopefully they’ll change their minds and do physical as well!

scummy_yum

Yeah, too bad Disney is stopping doing physical...

TaylorDangerTorres

That's not technically true.  Sony is just handling all of their physical releases now
