Yes, rubber neodymium magnets. They're amazing for holding chisels. I get them from K&J Magnetics, they're not super cheap though. They sell them in two sizes I think and I get both for differently sized tools
They're definitely suspended, the magnets are strong enough to hold most of the chisels upside down. Some of the custom chisels are a bit heavy though and I had to take a file and flatten the backs of the shanks for more contact.
Overall though I love the system, makes my time turning much more efficient. Steal away!
Do you find that the tools become magnetized when using a magnetic tool holder like this? I tried one once and my tools started sticking to my tool rest. It affected my ability to control the tool.
Luckily I have not really had this problem. I try not to slide them off of the magnet, but lift. It might be that my tool rest is a POS and not very ferrous

Are the pads holding the gouges magnetized? And do you remember where you got them?

I’m interested in a setup like this. Can you post a pic of the entire rack?

This is cool. I like how the magnets are strong enough to hold them almost suspended. No need for a bottom rail. I might be stealing this idea
