I agree about it being so different that it actually sounds like it’s original. I don’t listen to My Chemical Romance all that often, but I have listened to their version of Cancer many times because my sibling listens to them. I might be biased because of this, but I like the twenty one pilots version a lot better. To me, it just sounds a lot more emotional in a way that I can connect to. I like that it’s sort of softer, almost like it’s more hopeless. Also, the decision to add repetition really enhances it, in my opinion. When you’re stuck in something horrible like that, it can feel like you’re constantly moving in circles. That’s just how I feel about it though. From what I’ve seen from this subreddit, I think most people like the original better.
they're both so great in their own respects. the mcr version will always be the classic, but tøp is just so much more haunting to me. it feels like a last breath.
I love the TOP version better. It feels right to me.
From the lyrics it seems the person is near the end, and have reached a stage of acceptance, and Tyler's emotions match that. Plus his voice is so sweet. The MCR version sounds like they are angry and wants to fight, as though still in an earlier stage, but I just don't get that from the lyrics.
And people just would rather hear someone want to fight cancer. They don't want to hear that person accepting the end - I think it just makes them feel uncomfortable. That's how I hear it. I know it's not a popular take
Lol my daughter overheard someone at our MCR concert ask what song Cancer was when they played it (WHICH HOW COULD THEY NOT KNOW THIS AMAZING SONG?!) The friend replied "Cancer by Twenty One Pilots". Died a little.
I think they are both amazing in their own ways. I will always love the original more, simply because it's the original. But I LOVE Tyler's rendition of it.

There was a time when I would’ve disagreed and said tøp’s version was far superior. But now MCR is my #2 and both versions are amazing in their own right 😁
I actually heard the cover before I heard the original, so, while the original is good, I like the cover more and it has a very special place in my heart

I disagree, I think the MCR version is far superior, mainly due to Gerard Way’s vocal performance

The Black Parade is one of my all time favorite albums. Gerard’s inflections and tones are so interesting I do love his vocals
