My father was a professional athlete and used to go to Mexico City for conditioning (3000m over the sea level) to train for a pair of months before competitions

BodybuildingNerd

Your father was Cain Velasquez??

reallysmartbot

Fabricio Werdum

VeryNiceRussianTroll

^ a man who knows his history

Available_Rub834

Sea level fatha

Loud-Weakness4840

This is the way. Stay at sea level or lower altitude to practice technique. You can train longer and get in more reps. Go to altitude to work on conditioning.

Jassida

Cave training

WhoIsHe_19

Derrick Lewis did something similar. That’s why he has the best cardio in the HW division.

CapablePerformer7195

Why does Hasbullah looked like a shitty photoshop attempt 😭

Maupin88

He has "resting Photoshop body" syndrome

Netrezen

Photoshop would be putting him on the ridge behind without changing the aspect ratio :)

RS-2

Definitely helps cardio

zero_ivi

Have we not learned anything from dragon ball!

Quarter13

I can tell you that since moving to Colorado, my drinking powers have multiplied at lower altitude back home

MyNameIsRay

My dad lives outside of Vegas, and there's a bar on top of the mountain pass (mountain springs saloon) that's about a mile high. Every beer there was like 2-3 at sea level. It's nuts how much of a difference it makes.

Quarter13

Lmao. Yeah the blackout creeps up much faster

jayBplatinum

So if u start getting too drunk you just go back down the mountain?

Quarter13

Yeah, but be sure to use the zipline

[deleted]

[удалено]

Quarter13

That's why I only come down from my shack in the woods to deliver packages. Ironically I moved from NC to Colorado. Definite adjustment

Greig421

Unabomber? Is that you?

Quarter13

Listen, David, how many times do we have to have this convo about snitchin'?

donotressucitate

Very interesting. Science!

Quarter13

Gotta be the coolest "uncool" thing I can think of

CoLeFuJu

Because of the air density there are adaptations to the red blood cells that allows for more oxygen to be moved when you get down to sea level where it is more dense.

az1m_

not necessarily density but o2 content but it decreases with density anyways so the same thing

CoLeFuJu

Ahh so density because there's actually less? I think what happens is the body produces more red blood cells so that it can maintain what the body needs for oxygen transport so when you come back down your body can deliver more.

PlatonicTaboo

More blood cells, thicker and stronger heart walls and higher haemoglobin content

CoLeFuJu

Yes, lots of adaptations!

AlternativeKnee8886

Historic populations of people from very high altitudes (Andes, Tibet, Rift Valley, etc) have genes that allow for better oxygen transport. This is permanent. Training at high altitude will temporarily raise your EPO and red blood cell count which also allows for better oxygen transport. This is temporary though only lasting a few weeks after leaving altitude

Tiny-Spray-1820

Isnt that the same with sherpas?

AlternativeKnee8886

Yep. They have some gene called EPAS1 that is unique to Tibet.

wood_slingers

Depends how much time they actually spend up there. The capitol is where they train, and that’s basically sea level, so there wouldn’t be an advantage there. If they go up to the mountains to train for weeks at time, then yes. That’s also where they go to hide out from USADA

Jazzlike-Wafer803

Khabibs father used to do regular six week training camps at one of the highest altitudes he could the boys to

wood_slingers

I think that was a long time ago though. I could be wrong but I think the bulk of their training takes place at sea level, so their amazing cardio comes through old fashion hard work, not just because they train at altitude.

blessedindigo

Wouldn't training at altitude be harder work?

wood_slingers

Yes, but I am pretty certain those videos of them training in the mountains are from many years ago. Their training now is mostly at sea level. Training at altitude years ago won’t give them any kind of benefit now

blessedindigo

Gotcha! I also would think the benefit goes away pretty fast since they don't actually have the EPAS1 gene.

Basic_Mark_1719

People need to watch Khabib and Islam before and after they joined AKA. It's not a coincidence that that gym has had a ton of champions.

Delanorix

Didnt Khabibs father start AKA? Which means he never really trained elsewhere.

Basic_Mark_1719

No, aka was started by Frank Shamrock and Javier Mendez. I don't even think Khabibs dad has ever visited the USA

ReformedishBaptist

Yes it’s why people from east Africa dominate long distance running usually. East Africa is almost all mountains.

0zi1

Interesting, I thought Kenya and surrounding were flat.

iSOBigD

Actually, I believe you're confusing Kenya and surrounding area with joe mama

ReformedishBaptist

Kenya is not the only place in Eastern Africa.

BittenAtTheChomp

6/10 fastest marathoners ever are Kenyan, alongside like a million other long-distance records. If your "East Africa long distance running" theory doesn't include Kenya it's worthless lol, so guy has a point. For the record, the highest peaks in Africa outside Kilimanjaro are found in Kenya. But there are tons of places with higher altitude than East Africa. That's not simply why.

ReformedishBaptist

Why would it not include Kenya? My point being Kenya is not the only country in the region of east Africa. That’s my only point.

BittenAtTheChomp

You say living at high altitude with a consequent conditioning advantage is why people from east Africa dominate long distance running. They say I thought Kenya and the surrounding area were flat and therefore your altitude theory is flawed/wrong. You just saying "Kenya isn't the only place in eastern Africa" comes off as my theory is correct, it just applies to countries besides Kenya—because *if Kenya is flat, your theory is bogus, given that Kenya and Tanzania are the two east African countries that dominate long-distance running.* that's all I got atp

Ake-TL

It’s not all that, their( yeah, vague, take it as Kenyans, I’m not anthropologist) traditional lifestyle has a lot of movement requirements

chiezkychienne

I wonder how an athlete from La Rinconada will perform.

Select_Ad3588

Dangerously

PuzzleheadedBit2190

Yeah it does

yer8ol

![gif](giphy|IvqfGNIgN6OwdkCNuG) Dis guy killing them on the training sessions plus crazy mountains results in great conditioning

[deleted]

It's not only that, It's living without luxury, living a very simple but hard/modest life. That's why these Dagestanis are such a force, just look at Khabib's training vids with his pops and group, out in the mountain no fancy gym, no women, no partying, no supermarket or whatsoever Just you and like-minded guys that want to just only train and become the best

ScrewdriverPants

Supermarkets are definitely holding some guys back

NothinWrongWithDat

Imagine Jon Jones or Alex Pereira without a supermarket. 🤯

0zi1

And über eat

redrumreturn

The cult around these people is ridiculous. Have a look at what trouble khabib is in

SupahBean

They're just talking UFC-wise. We're in a UFC sub

maple-queefs

Yes, it's been known for 50+ years

redrumreturn

Russian state doping certainly helps aswell

StraightCashHomie89

Yes, same with fighters who live in Denver or Mexico City

Mammoth_Ferret_1772

For sure. The higher you go, the less air there is

ntr_usrnme

The benefits of altitude have been known for a long time. It’s often spoken about when there are cards in Mexico or Colorado. Training under hypoxia is beneficial for endurance.

215VanillaGorilla

There's a reason why people go to Colorado all the time before fights and to train for sports. Working at elevation strengthens the cardio.

creamyturtle

Eagles MMA is in Derbent, Dagestan which is actually right by the water. it's literally only a few feet above sea level

gcms16

Yes, and not drinking alcohol.

No-Spare-4212

Did someone really make a post asking about altitude training?

Independent_Bath_922

He's probably 12

IIDasPterodactyl

Almost certainly

chipper68

Training at altitude provides a lot of advantages, US trains at altitude in Colorado Springs. Juicing is also helpful, Russians are known to JUICE. Shouldn't be a surprise that they stop fighting early, probably to prevent their organs from melting. Westerns fighters shouldn't go to SA or UAE if they are smart.

Affectionate-Pin-939

The capital city is only 10 m above sea level.

TheIronSheikh00

Yes, high altitude training is well documented in other endeavors / sports too.

ChinasShitAirQuality

What’s a mini trash can doing up there?

lllchisenlll

Hiding from getting tested

Dogolog22

What about when they train at AKA?

time_thug19

Is that why DDP is surprisingly good and winning? Pretoria is a high altitude city

ST8CASHBRKLYN

I fear the FALLING.

mchief101

I remember going to a gym at high altitude and doing stairmaster. Usually stairmaster is easy for me but at the high altitude gym, i was huffing and puffing and breathing harder than usual.

zuquinho

Absolutely. Your body increases its BPG levels at high altitude which allows oxygen to be delivered through out your body more efficiently. So if you have higher BPG levels at lower altitude your body has access to more oxygen which means you get less tired as more oxygen for energy production is available per breath.

coming_up_thrillhous

Obviously not. Looks like that dude in the back got shrunk by atmospheric pressure

Physizist

Makhachkala is at sea level and it’s main city Dagestani fighters come from

Convict_felon

Yes for sure. These mountains and area looks amazing!

Seabrook76

Legit thought he was hiking with his kid at first. 😂

silasdoesnotexist

Yes, as well as the lack of drug testing.

DM_me_y0ur_tattoos

Yes. It's why Olympians train in the rockies

Primary-Picture-5632

A popular training camp for boxers is big bear in California because of its elevation

Shredding_Airguitar

everydayimrusslin

That and the EPO.

anonanoobiz

2 schools of thought 1 conditioning your body to more efficiently process oxygen, by training in oxygen deficient environments helps- true 2 training in oxygen deficient environments means not being able to train at max body capability, workouts are likely less intense and for a shorter duration- also true, + or - 30 minutes of training 5x a week (conservative numbers imo) adds up to +- 120 hours of training a year I imagine there’s a curve where once you develop elite conditioning to be able to handle the low oxygen, and can thrive in low oxygen scenarios, the feedback cycle is maximized and results in elite of elite conditioning

Villageidiot1984

Research says there is not a difference at sea level for training done at altitude. It helps tremendously with performance at altitude, but at sea level there is not a measurable increase in performance. However I suspect that for some people it does make a difference.

takeittothetop1

Dagestan isn’t even in high elevation AFAIK, but they do occasionally train in the mountains.

JonathanS93

Out there hiding from Spetsnaz

juaburg

Thats why Dricus has such good cardio. Lives high above sea level

sugashowrs

I dunno but that view is fucking amazing.

cikkamsiah

Definitely, but it boils down to their own skills as not all the Dagestani fighters are successful.

Eastboundtexan

Probably, but it also helps that no drug testing agency is hiring rock climbers to get to remote dagestani villages

Intention-Sad

You should be looking for someone like Yair that can’t be reached by USADA for 3 consecutive times. The Dagestanis never had that issue AFAIK

Happeegolfer

The steroids too…

Kazziinging

Yes!

Arthurmrmusic

Yes

Character-Head301

Yup Colorado has the advantage too

Yagami-Is-Kira

It's actually from holding down their sisters to stop them from fucking them

interia1099

Not the hentai nerd talking lmao

Yagami-Is-Kira

Haha fair. There are some sensitive flowers in this bunch

RoshHoul

>sensitive flowers Nah chief. You are just weird.

Yagami-Is-Kira

Same joke was told by Frankie Boyle. Suppose people were just as sensitive too back then. It's crazy how many AKA members are on reddit today. Must be busy shut in atm...

RoshHoul

Same joke was told in a context of "hey, i'm a guy that does provocative shit, it's an event where i"ll do exactly that, and also here is a paragraph of a setup for the punch line". Context matters.

Yagami-Is-Kira

So reddit is a place where this type of humour does not belong. I should have been more aware.

RoshHoul

Again, not what I said.

Yagami-Is-Kira

He didn't tell a paragraph before the punchline if that's what's bothering you.

SkepticalVir

Lol you’re clearly a loser irl to be so hateful and jealous.

Yagami-Is-Kira

Hateful and jealous or a joke? Islam is probably the best fighter active right now. There you go

Pikablu555

No it’s PED’s

BigTedBear

Allegedly they have their own secret sauce.

JewsusKrist

The inbreeding also helps

redditman3943

Possibly but the advantages of training at altitude is overrated.

edw1n-z

I was told by someone that training at high altitudes is not what helps you but sleeping at high ltitudes does.

EOVA94

How so ?

DDWildflower

You with a little fairy dust punch of EPO.
