I am starting to believe the Soviets built their armored vehicles with very cheap steel, trading quality for quantity.
Why build 100 APC when you can build 500 for the same money using cheap materials?
So, there is that idea, popularized by Viktor Suvorov in "Inside the Soviet Army" that Soviet equipment came in two versions: the real stuff and a "monkey model." A monkey model would lack the newest bells and whistles like advanced fire control or gun stabilization. The armor might be less effective and so on. These would be sold to less reliable USSR allies.
But, in case of a major war, Soviet industry would start producing the monkey models exclusively - simply because they can be produced cheaply and rapidly. Remember, in Soviet thinking quantity is a substitute for quality.
This may be the equipment Ukraine is fighting right now.
Also, in the same book, Suvorov wrote at length about the Soviet policy of never discarding old equipment and putting it in long term storage instead. Again, the idea was that in case of major conflict, even a T-55 is better than nothing. We sure saw these in Ukraine!
Not quite right; why build 100, when you can build 500 cheaper models ... or build 700 even cheaper ones and pocket all the extra $ while claiming they're as good as the initial order required?

I really feel like these cages are actively working against them. I mean, if it detonates on top, it effectively turns it into an airburst and sends shrapnel from above straight into the top of all their heads. Also the cope cage becomes shrapnel too.
Well even when the cope cage does what it's supposed to, it only detonates the charge prematurely so the complicated process the weapon uses to defeat the armor doesn't have the right spacing it needs to work properly. It ain't gonna do shit if you're on the outside of the vehicle. You might actually be worse off with it there.

Also the original Soviet doctrine had all their armor capable of river crossings so they can't be built too heavy.
