This movie is a classic to me. From start to finish I was hooked right in.
I also got to watch it the first time with one of my favorite people who I miss very much, so there's an emotional connection to it as well, but regardless if there was our wasn't, this movie is Mel Gibson at his best.
Saw this in the theatre because it was so hyped. I think it was just where I was at in life or whatever at the time but I left very underwhelmed. But I've re watched this several times since then and I always wonder what my younger self was thinking, this movie is really stellar

I don’t think it’s underrated, just doesn’t get talked about much these days. Very hyped at the time. It’s problematic….Mel Gibson paints a picture of Maya culture that deserves to be destroyed by Europeans.
I think it points to the inconvenient facts to some that believe the tribes living in the americas before 1492 were only innocent peace loving people. Which it wasn’t the case. There were aggressive tribes that exploited and enslaved weaker rival tribes. These were the Aztecs in this film I believe. Gibsons film is meant to be a cautionary tale to us about how the society depicted in it was decadent, lazy, and exploitative. It was rotting culturally. Gibsons argument being that is our culture now. That we are susceptible to being overrun and taken down by our own societal vices. It’s a warning.
Well you and I can’t really know what Mel Gibsons intentions were. I looked at the film in the context of the story and how the characters were presented to us against the backdrop of all the issues being shown in the film. There were so many to see within the film.Thank you for the thoughtful reply!
I don't think *they're* supposed to know how screwed they are, but the idea the audience is supposed to see the conquistadors as anything other yet another catastrophy coming to befall them strains credulity.
Say what you want about Mel Gibson and his racist views but any other director would have cast white dudes with spray tans in this movie and made them speak with British accents. This is a classic. It’s thrilling, immersive and has me so hooked every time I watch that I don’t mind reading the subtitles.
They were speaking Yucateco Maya, not Nahuatl(the language of the Aztec/Mexica people), as someone else pointed out. Among other historical inaccuracies it's a fun movie anyhow.
Someone else must have posted his here in the last few weeks because I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it but I *legally acquired it and a bunch of other movies* a few weeks ago, almost watched it last night but this sub has made my backlog infinitely better and longer. I watched Quick Change (also because of this sub)
I've only watched it the once and it left an impression. The part were his friend told him that his woman didn't die screaming, will stay with me forever.
I love the old man’s story near the beginning: “But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want.
He will go on taking and taking, until one day the World will say, 'I am no more and I have nothing left to give..."
I will say this, the when the eclipse happens and the priest turns to the camera and gives that smile like “can you believe these people actually are buying this shit” is a fantastic shot
Mel Gibson is a crazy asshole and this movie is not even remotely historically accurate, but damn if it isn’t well crafted and engaging and hugely entertaining anyway. The man knows how to tell a good story.
Beautiful film, total atrocious dogshit as a historical epic. I fucking hate this trash piece of shit beautiful film that is the first big budget depiction of Pre-Columbian Mayan culture which totally ignores all attempt at accuracy.
I had trouble with it as I really don’t like MG as a person. The Mad Max movies were great growing up, but then as a person he got kind of nasty, so it is hard to appreciate his work.
Yeah it is universally known to be pretty much devoid of any historical accuracy but as an action movie and spectacle it is just so entertaining and looks amazing
Yes he hates the Jews and calls cops sugartits and maybe has a slight drinking problem but Gibson can make a movie in an obscure language better than anyone.
I haven't seen anything to validate the hating of Jewish people. I don't know he might have said some dodgy stuff - not something I've looked deeply into. I think he made some comments about and took issue with 'Jews running hollywood' which is something you can read about in any Jewish online magazine or other news outlet, it's not exactly a secret, just that no-one talks about it much.
["Fucking Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world"](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jews-responsible-for-all-wars-in-the-world-but-mel-gibson-not-responsible-for-dui-anymore/)
Holy sh\*t - no wonder I didn't pay much attention.
Well, it's an extreme opinion and instantly falsifiable historically - unless he means specifically the 20th century where I'm sure other religions and cultures played a part. I suspect history is far more complex than even historians have any idea about. Popularly speaking (even controversially there are frequently goodies and baddies, victims and oppressors - again I suspect it's seldom so simple. He must've been angry about something to say something like that.

Man. I HAVE to watch this movie. 7 years on Reddit and again and again people keep talking about how great this movie is.
You really should. It's excellent.
If you don’t know the ending, don’t spoil it for yourself. It was a huge wtf moment for me when I first saw it.
You really do. It's definitely in my top list.
The costumes and characters alone are worth it. Some of the most immersive and fantastical time travel I've ever seen in film.
Couldn’t agree more.
Hell yeah brother.
Possibly one of the greatest films ever made!!! I am jaguar paw. My sons will hunt this forest as their father has and his father has.
What a movie!!!
Dude this movie is the shit, wish he had more movies like this that took place in ancient times
Saw this in the theatre because it was so hyped. I think it was just where I was at in life or whatever at the time but I left very underwhelmed. But I've re watched this several times since then and I always wonder what my younger self was thinking, this movie is really stellar
A movie you can easily watch a number of times
This one is not underrated. It’s a great movie
More of a forgotten movie.
It had Mel Gibson's name attached during the peak of his awfulness. That probably hurts its appraisal.
That's fine, more Apocalypto for me, amirite?
Simple chase movie with maximum effect, and EPIC ending.
Oddly enough carries some parallels to Mad Max.

See sub name while scrolling, "Ooh, it'd have to be Apocalypto, such a fantastic film." \*Clicks\* \*Sees first post\* wahey

I respect that view but I very much doubt Gibson was thinking the same.

“Oh boy, the conquistadors are here. We’re saved!” Is certainly one way to end a movie
That’s what you took from the ending? Interesting
Not the vibe from the ending I got at all. More of both sides saying "well we're screwed." Silently to each other.
I don't think *they're* supposed to know how screwed they are, but the idea the audience is supposed to see the conquistadors as anything other yet another catastrophy coming to befall them strains credulity.
Good point. I thunk you're right.
Exactly
I rewatched this movie with my wife the night before the total solar eclipse. It's a masterclass in immersive filmmaking.
Never saw it until the pandemic when it hit streaming. I didn't know what to expect but WOW
Fantastic movie.
This is a pretty damn good movie
My uncle took me to the movies for this one. I was 15 at that time and this movie blew my mind.
Great ending!!

Beware when a dog suddenly stops barking.
Never seen it.
Used the actual dialect instead of the crappy “English with an accent” route. Thanks Mel.

At least it wasn’t the audial travesty Pathfinder was.
Never seen it .. worth watching?
Very much worth watching. Excellent movie.
Thanks I’ll check it out
Very underrated
Yes definitely worth watching. This post makes me wnat to watch it again and probably will tomorrow.
Mel Gibson is a shithead, but this is a good movie.
They can be two different things. Is this the example?
"Say what you will about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure." -paraphrased from Southpark

This one pops into my brain occasionally as one I need to see at some point. Your post is the little nudge I needed!
Mel Gibson made this I’m lost… what a classic
What a film! My most rewatched movie of all time!
It's unfortunate that Mel Gibson made it, it's so good.
One of my favorites, just got the bluray recently
Not underrated at all. It's very highly regarded as a masterpiece.. sir or ma'am. Or ... Person.
At first I thought it was a good movie but as time went by I realized it was just Mel Gibson having sex with history again.
YES
It's one of my top 5 but no one has seen it. Visually I think it's my favorite movie. Mel is nuts but god damn he is a genius
The inaccuracies bothered me but the story was otherwise enjoyable and really well written.
A truly great movie….
Best final scene ever. 🛶
This movie is so good you can watch it without subtitles and still understand everything.
I love the old man’s story near the beginning: “But the owl replied, "No. I saw a hole in the Man, deep like a hunger he will never fill. It is what makes him sad and what makes him want. Sadly it is the work of a piece of garbage and nobody saw it.
I will say this, the when the eclipse happens and the priest turns to the camera and gives that smile like “can you believe these people actually are buying this shit” is a fantastic shot
Hate this movie
Hacksaw Ridge is another Gibson movie that is overlooked.
Olak
“I’ll call you, ‘Almost’”
I love this movie.
One of the greatest
Intense best word I can use of how it affected me
Top 10 all time
I can’t believe it was made in 2006…that feels like the fastest 17 1/2 years ever
Very good cinema 🎦
Mel Gibson is a crazy asshole and this movie is not even remotely historically accurate, but damn if it isn’t well crafted and engaging and hugely entertaining anyway. The man knows how to tell a good story.
Amazing movie
OUTSTANDING.
It’s so good
The birds are the best
this is in my top 5
Imagine if they had dodge chargers SRT lol
I don't think anyone considers this underrated

basically "home alone" but in the jungle
I want to see this!
First time seeing this was an *experience* Subsequent views have been just as good, but that first time was really something. Love this film
Absolute GOLD! 👏🏾👏🏾💯
Excellent film
Really intense
I had trouble with it as I really don’t like MG as a person. The Mad Max movies were great growing up, but then as a person he got kind of nasty, so it is hard to appreciate his work.
It is simply one of the greatest films ever made - this is the bar of how to make a period film. Mel Gibson's best in my opinion.
This movie is good, but not great. The scene in the tents when the chiefs son has just got married. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Not accurate at all, terrible if you actually know Mesoamerican history.
Yea you gotta go in not expecting this to be a depiction of true history. If you can do that, you can enjoy the movie. It's a great film overall.
I'm curious, what makes you feel this way?
Yeah it is universally known to be pretty much devoid of any historical accuracy but as an action movie and spectacle it is just so entertaining and looks amazing
Yes he hates the Jews and calls cops sugartits and maybe has a slight drinking problem but Gibson can make a movie in an obscure language better than anyone.
It’s not an obscure language, go to The Yucatán and it’s common to hear that language spoken there.

Jaguar Paw was a badass
This is an historically important and well-characterized cinematic masterpiece.
You’d have never guessed this was directed by Mel Gibson.
Dude Mel Gibson is an Oscar winning director. He knows the craft well. He sabotaged his own career unfortunately.
Mayan civilization had collapsed by the time the Spanish arrived, so this movie makes no sense.
Good thing it's a fictional story made for entertainment and not a highly regarded documentary that influences all the upper crust of academia!
Definitely influences how most people view them though
Mel Gibson should make another movie about ancient civilizations
