I think Stingray or Thunderbird 4 would have been better names than Agamemnon

Duanedoberman

Agamemnon was at Trafalgar, now we just need Ballerophon!

GMFPs_sweat_towel

HMS Agamemnon's Battle Honors * Ushant 1781 * The Saints 1782 * Genoa 1795 * Copenhagen 1801 * Trafalgar 1805 * San Domingo 1806 * Crimea 1854–55 * Dardanelles 1915–16

MrPloppyHead

"Deathy McDeathface", "don't look now", "apocalypse incarnate"... "in Barrow" just sounds a bit shit.

Entire_Procedure4862

All the Astute class ships have to begin with A, I would argue if you are going for Greek Myth and the Trojan war Achilles is a better choice. But you have a full list of historical ship names beginning with A right here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ship_names_of_the_Royal_Navy_(A) Not on the list but I would suggest HMS Anthropoid after the Czech/British operation to kill SS officer Reinhard Heydrich.

Gellert

>All the Astute class ships have to begin with A So *Attitude Adjuster* isnt off the table?

Frap_Gadz

Adopting the Culture ship naming conventions would be awesome, *Appeal To Reason* would also be an excellent name for an Astute class SSN

Shriven

Appeal to reason....is that a UNSC ship name?

Frap_Gadz

It's a Culture ship from Iain Banks, think the Halo writers took some inspiration with their ship names.

Shriven

Oh sorry I completely misread your original comment.

Frap_Gadz

No worries!

The_Yaxham_Beach

Atomic Annihilator

PODnoaura

>Achilles is a better choice. Famed for overconfidence, having a fatal flaw, invading somewhere on dubious pretences, slaughtering civilians, mostly associated with injured footballers?

Entire_Procedure4862

Just being an incredible killer, these Navy names are traditionally overblown bluster, Invincible, warspite, dreadnought... Rodney.

Mackerel_Skies

What’s a submarine’s equivalent to an ankle?

johnydarko

> I would argue if you are going for Greek Myth and the Trojan war Achilles is a better choice. So the guy who famously is defeated and dies in battle in the story? Yeah, not really a great name for a ship that will go into battle lol (or a boat in this case I guess) I mean Agamemnon does end up being unexpectedly murdered by his wife while taking a bath, but that's at least after the story when he's back home, at the end of the Illiad he is alive and (broadly) triumphant being the greatest greek warrior still alive (as Achilles and Ajax have died)

Sadistic_Toaster

> All the Astute class ships have to begin with A So . . . we could still have HMS AAAAAAAGH! ?

Gellert

STUPID HUMIE! DATS NOT HOW YOU SPELL **WAAAAGH!**

Uniform764

>I would argue if you are going for Greek Myth and the Trojan war Achilles is a better choice. Achilles has been used for ship names before, but Agamemnon has more storied history as a name for RN ships. Agamemnon was at Trafalgar for example, whereas the biggest battle honour for Achilles was River Plate when Graf Spee was chased down. That said Ajax is also available.

all_about_that_ace

Not a bad name, but I unironically think we should use joke names for our ships for the psychological effect it would have on an enemy in war. I mean what enemy is going to take "HMS Rubber Ducky" seriously, joke names would make enemies underestimate us. Besides how much more humiliating would it be to loose a battle to "HMS Stop Hitting Yourself" or "HMS Yo Mama" than something serious like "HMS Agamemnon".

Sadistic_Toaster

>HMS Yo Mama Too American. We should learn into our culture more, and go for the HMS 'You wot?' , or the HMS 'You want some?'

Wonderful_Discount59

HMS You Spilled My Pint! HMS Come And 'Ave A Go If You Think You're 'Ard Enough!

EthicalViolator

HMS Wot u lookin' at?

all_about_that_ace

Perfect.

ThePlanck

"In Barrow" seems like a terrible name for a sub to me

danger0usd1sc0

Sister ship, "In Bruges"

BriefAmphibian7925

It's not always desirable to be underestimated. I'd say that currently the RN would prefer to be overestimated than under.

Uniform764

I mean HMS Gay Viking and HMS Buttercup have both served in the Royal Navy. Theres a real...range of names in the centuries of history that organisation has.

OrangeOfRetreat

I always thought the Halo ship names were a great way to do it. “HMS Two For Flinching” for some cheek.

flossgoat2

Taking a cue from Iain M Banks' _Culture_ novels... _Another Fine Mess_ _Any Time You Like_ _And I'll Finish It_ _Antisocial Behaviour_ _And Carry A Big Stick_ _Anger Management Issues_ _Atomic Peace Envoy_ _Abrupt Change Of Tone_ _Adopt The Position_ _Arrange Your Affairs_ _Accept Your Fate_ _

LostInTheVoid_

Abrupt Change of Tone would be very fitting. One moment you're on a ship just going about your daily routine next you're rocked by several torps and you're now sinking out of nowhere.

Fantastic-Fee-1999

Blippy McBlubface. You see the blip, you soon get the blub. Does what it says on the tin. Simple.

ThePlanck

HMS One Ping Only

spong_miester

Should have been named Dave, I know the names have historical significance but they sound so poncy and elitist, plus everyone knows a Dave who loves being filled with seamen

Uniform764

HMS Rodney?

GMFPs_sweat_towel

Is named after one of the most successful admirals in Royal Navy history.
