Scheduling is based on seniority. If you have past federal experience it gets taken into account. It's a 24/7 operation so coverage is needed at all times. I'm just now leaving my first week precepting on the floor. I will continue next week, but will be taking the calls myself. Best of luck to you friend!

Where does training take place? I recently started as a VSR at the VBA but I have an MSW so the VCL would be a better fit. Training for VSR used to be in Denver or Baltimore but is virtual atm. I’m thinking of applying to be a social science specialist but I’d rather not be out of state for an extended period of time. I’m also hoping for a non business hour schedule that is fully remote (I have young kids and parents that need help) so the varied shift aspect is really appealing to me.

sexypenquins

100 % virtual my friend. This gig is a godsend. Took my first call today with a preceptor listening in. It takes some getting used to, but I think I'll do alright.

2kidsandaschnauzer

That sounds amazing. Do you know when the next training class begins? I’m trying to time my application submission so that I can hopefully be selected before the next training begins. It’s been challenging juggling work schedules/childcare with both of us working a standard 8-4:30 shift. I know a lot of people want Monday-Friday business hours but I’d love an early or late start time, or better yet weekend work.

Shift bids happen once a year i think. Everyone in my training group is still waiting. I will be bidding on nights once it comes up lol. If you have prior Fed experience (like i do) it gets taken into account I'm seniority ranking. Best of luck bud.

You could be right. Once you get to taking calls everything just kind of runs together. Lol

Environmental-Age678

Do people get fired for not passing the final knowledge check? I think I’ll do alright, but I’m kind of freaking out!

sexypenquins

Not anyone in my group at least. I believe you get a chance to retest. You got this bud.

Environmental-Age678

Thank you! That makes me feel better. Maybe I’ll see ya on the lines sometime! Lol

Penquinsrule83

I'm starting next Monday! Was referred on 11/29. TO came at the beginning of March. FO took about a week. PIV and equipment will be coming next week hopefully. This is for the Social Science Specialist position.

cmt7808

What was the interview like? I recently applied for this position.

Penquinsrule83

It was your typical behavior based questions. My interview was at 6:30 in the morning. Not sure if that was a tactic or not lol. Think of a time you've had to respond to a crisis. What were the methodologies you utilized? what was the outcome? Best of luck bud!

Icy-Holiday-2516

I interviewed as well about 2 weeks ago. Seems like I should be prepared to wait a while for a response :). Do u how the work schedules are set up?

2kidsandaschnauzer

Any response yet?

Icy-Holiday-2516

Nope nothing yet. I emailed HR yesterday and got a generic response. So trying to stay patient and keep applying.

cmt7808

Great, and thank you!

Late entry. I got my TO for social service specialist Crisis line. Time line interviewed January 19, References Jan 23, an TO April 7. Thev vocalized eod for may 8 .

Penquinsrule83

Just hit precepting yesterday. I appreciated training, however it gets a bit repetitive. A whole lot of the information presented is really not necessary and irrelevant to the actual job. It can be stressful because expectations are in place, and must be met before moving forward. The organization itself is pretty cool. This appears to be the place to be! Good luck bud!

It can get monotonous very quick. Unfortunately, so can the job. This isn't at all what I've been doing for the past decade. The important thing to understand is that QA and the precepting team are here for us as responders. I am on the day shift which usually means it will take longer to clear precepting. I'm cool with chilling until I can. Really learning how to manage these interactions with our callers is hands on. Training is great and will give you a generalized understanding of the job. It gets more intense as it goes along. I wish you the best of luck!

tee4tee2

what are the unrealistic expectations you are seeing/hearing.

If you don't mind me asking, what shift will u be working? Or how is it set? 8 p.m.-6 a.m.? And stay in one place meaning if you wanted to move out of state that wouldn't be honored? Thanks

Okay I get what your saying. Thanks for sharing. I interviewed 4/28/22 and haven't heard anything yet. So im staying optimistic as well and continuing to apply. This position seems like it may come with some challenges but would definitely put me where I wanna be career wise. Glad to hear it's getting better for you.

Thanks for being so kind. I'm keeping the faith and knowing that things run pretty slow helps. I sure will! Take care as well. I'll be sure to DM you once I get my offer. Thanks again :)

2kidsandaschnauzer

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but can you elaborate on available shifts? I’m just seriously considering whether or not I should try to make the move to the VCL. Recently started as a VSR with the VBA, and there are a lot of pros-AWS, CWS, earliest tour of duty is 6:00-2:30, teleworking 100% now (starting end of June, we will have to be in office 2 days per pay period, which isn’t bad.) But I’ve got 2 young kids and parents that need transportation to medical appointments so I’d love an even more untraditional schedule. Like 4:30 am to 1 pm. Or 12 pm-8:30 pm. Or Sunday through Thursday. Amy chance scheduled like those are offered? Also wondering about promotability…VSRs can eventually apply (I think after a year or 2) to become RVSRs, which is a 9-12 position. I have an MSW and worked with veterans before I became a VSR so lots of pluses (for me) to both positions. Just trying to figure out if I should stay where I’m at or try to make the leap

Thanks for the info! It sounds like there is a lot of flexibility in terms of tours of duty. As far as tours being picked for you, do you know if people with less seniority are more likely to get business hours (after training)? Or are new hires with less seniority more likely to get an overnight shift, and then they can transfer to a more desirable shift after 6 months or a year, say. I’m probably one of the few who doesn’t want a Monday through Friday businessish hours TOD. I mean, I don’t necessarily want a 10 pm to 6:30 am shift but a super early or super late morning/afternoon start would be perfect for me

Easy enough. It is based on all of the other knowledge checks you take before. Just make sure to go over your answers before getting locked out.

vanny-sc

Thanks for sharing your experience. I interviewed in January, and references checked too. I still haven't heard anything. My usa job status still says Referred. Wish me luck

whatyouknow11

Just got a tentative offer today. Does anyone know what shifts are offered for social science specialist?

2kidsandaschnauzer

Did you get more info regarding available shifts?

There is another NEO class that started last week. It is usually every six weeks i believe. Plan on taking a bit for onboarding.

sexypenquins

Let's hope so! Just don't divulge my Reddit handle lol.

Ok_Celery9003

I applied in May, was referred 8/24 and interviewed 9/2. Haven't heard anything yet. My anxiety got the best of me so I emailed HR this morning and of course got a generic response that they haven't selected anyone yet and that no further information was available at this time. Reading other comments, I see it's not uncommon to have a few months between interview and TO. So, I will continue to wait. Sending well wishes to anyone else in my same boat!

No_Play_1824

Can anyone tell me how the back ground check works

Candid_Valuable_9457

What do the social services assistants do? How’s the job a year out? I interviewed and waiting over here

CarefulCharacter9563

How's the job? Is it worth the pay?
