He’s talking about the two runners across the area where Puli shot, obscuring Allison’s vision the ball. “Well worked” is maybe not the most precise term, but it was a well designed free kick.
That’s what I thought you meant (and I agree, it was well drawn up).
I just usually think of “well-worked” as including several crisp passes and good runs strung together, which this obviously was not.
Reddit downvote spirals are so strange to me, lol…. I would neither describe that as “well worked” nor praise the mind who “dreamed it up” , like, what? It was a direct free kick—he used the one touch he had to strike the ball on frame? It was hit well. It was expertly placed. But “dreamed up”? That’s holland’s World Cup free kick. *That* was dreamed up. This was a direct free kick, at the top of the box, that was struck by the one guy standing over it?
Do you not understand how these plays are designed? Go watch it again. Yes Pulisic hit a great shot which is required but also the runners moving across the open area to both drag defenders and cross the keepers sightline for a split second heavily contributed as well. That is what a set piece is about. Multiple things working in unison to lead to the goal, whether it's a corner, cross into the box from a free kick, or yes, a direct shot from a free kick. He didn't just decide to kick it on a whim. The movement of the other players was designed and either everyone knew he was going to shoot it, or he had 2 options off the play and if he saw the opening he would try the shot.
I honestly wonder if the announcers were sweating it, or the post game commentary sung design praises or something, that’s maybe coloring people’s perspective? I watched on mute, but I saw it…it would not be my opinion that was a free kick we should be heralding the ingenuity of. Puli smacked the shit out of it, and placed it perfectly —hell beat Alisson on his NON-wall side—all of which was brilliant…I just made a comment that I stand by, that I’m confused the *type* of praise we’re giving and where we’re placing the praise.
It was a designed set piece, clearly illustrated by coordinated movements by all players. You’re being obtuse and you know it. It was a successfully planned out set piece, period.
It was a successfully planned out set piece. 100%. I completely agree with *that* …I was also “designed” —yes. obviously.
I’m not trying to be obtuse…maybe I’m being nit picky? I’m just saying the “drawing it up” aspect was about as basic as the X’s and O’s get on a direct free kick from the top of the box taken by the one guy standing over it…yet, but the execution *was* LEGIT, so I think it’s weird we’re having all this hot design talk is all. I dunno. I’m high 🤷🏻♂️
I guess my comment initially was just to point out that it was clearly something that was worked on and coordinated in training, and that it appeared to be executed exactly as designed, with the desired results. Without the two US players quickly shifting in front of the defensive wall, the free kick is likely much easier to save. The US has not really excelled at this kind of thing in recent years (that I can remember) so it was refreshing to see something like that play out, especially against a strong side like Brazil.
Turner is my least favorite player to have to be hard on but he deserved it last match and did everything a keeper could do to redeem himself this match like the good man he is. Happy for you man keep that mentality up through Copa.👏
The goal Brazil scored was a direct result of his poor distribution. Of course he had lots of good distributions at other points, some of which led directly to chances.
Brave and impressive performance by us against a very dangerous side after the 5-1 loss. Berhalter has a connection with this group and if they can put out a performance like this where they are pushing for a win rather than playing for a tie against a juggernaut, there could be something special brewing. I’m excited to continue to watch this group develop.
We conceded dangerous chances but also created a number of them. Allison and Turner no doubt motm for both teams.
Brazil is diiiirty every time we touched the ball we were thrown to the ground or held so our players couldn’t go anywhere. For instance after the free kick at the end of the game when turner made the save with the entire Brazilian team in the box and tried to run to get the ball up field to our strikers who where all alone and not one but two strikers grabbed him by the arm so he couldn’t…
I saw nothing but professional fouls to avoid breakaway attacks from both sides. Teams were smiling and laughing with each other throughout the game, which I found frustrating with a bet riding on it haha. Definitely didn't strike me as a dirty game at all.
You can’t discount the coach getting his players prepared. National team coach is the last guy these players listen to but they listened and played hard against Brazil after the debacle against Columbia. That’s what you want from this level of coach. Damnit I’m in gs corner now.
Crazy what a turnaround Scally had in game. He started off sending perfect back passes to set up Brazilian attackers. And then flipped a switch some how.
Eh we probably should have been down 3-1 in the first half. Obviously thrilled that we turned it around, incredible result. But I think we were pretty fortunate to still be in the match at the break
Much better performance, lots of positives from the back 5, still need significant improvement from the attackers and the creative output from midfield. We cannot rely on Pulisic’s set pieces to bail us out.
Striker is still a huge question mark. Pepi and Balo have been exceptionally underwhelming in their past few caps.
Our strikers dont even receive the ball or even touch it. Its not a matter of who should be a striker, its a matter of how we can produce more service for them, because our wings always seem to fail them, Robinson with his empty crosses, and with Weah thinking hes prime Messi trying to dribble around everyone but always failing. And even when our strikers do get the ball, its almost always in a position where they cant really strike, its usually just recovering the ball or playing deep in the wings.
Agreed tbh. I think our midfield did a really job in our low block, but they were pretty dire progressing the ball through the middle and getting it to the strikers. Whoever's up top has been completely isolated.
Well, not losing to Brazil for only our second time ever in history does mean something. “History” made. Good bounce back from the Colombia debacle. Onto Copa America!
We doubled and tripled him all night. Basically wanted to make sure someone else had to break us down. Weah and Mckennie were supporting Scally/Moore every time Vini was on the ball.
Definitely some stuff to clean up but I think we got the performance that we needed from USMNT tonight. More encouraged about Copa now. Holy crap that was entertaining.
Turner and this team needed this after the Colombia match. I'll takena result even if it's a friendly. Though it was uneven at times, we also created several chances. That's encouraging.
Well. GGG and the boys did everything that was needed from this performance (I think we’re still a bit tactically inept against low block teams). We’ve only given these performances against MX. I want to see this intensity every game. Make the fans believe in it.
Fair result, open game both sides had opportunities. Good for Turner , a great bounce back especially from the last game. USA should be encouraged, Brazil is average but its still just a friendly.
We played out from the back great. Their only goal came from the only time we decided to go long in the first half. It's pretty clear these guys can play out from the back when they're on it.
He is extremely provocative and always starting shit with players and talking shit to fans. He’s also a chronic diver and throws his hands up every time he doesn’t get a call.
Racism is never the answer and nobody should have to deal with that, but there’s a shit ton of black people in LaLiga. The reason vini gets the racist shit so much more than everyone else is because of the antics that he’s constantly putting on. It gives the racists an excuse
I could get down if this had any facts but it doesn’t. Vini far from my fave Brazilian player but I find him to be a good dude, and likable overall especially given how young he is.
I looked it up real quick to try and find examples and this is what I mean. Ignore the commentary but look at this. Upon scoring he chooses to talk shit to barca fans instead of celebrating with the rest of Madrids team. He then time wastes and celebrates his time wasting when barca fans boo it. And when he gets subbed off, He walks incredibly slow to time waste. When a barca player pushes him to hurry up, he laughs and taunts the barca crowd again.
https://youtu.be/hBqjMolkXzU?si=h6OSYOO93zh9s8O6
I never said he was a bad person. I like a lot of what he’s trying to do by bringing attention to the racism in Spain. He’s just got a ridiculous ego and is extremely whiney
Agree. I was very negative about the team and coach, but that’s a great bounce back. That’s on the coach to get them right and he came through. Good job G
Because he’s injured and missed the last 3 games of the season?
He’s consistently been the starting 9 for Brazil when healthy. This is not a good argument for you.
Tyler Adams missed the entire season and is rehabbing with his national team and he's consistently been the starting 6 when healthy. What's Richarlison's excuse?
Do they stream the press conferences live after the games?
Thought Weah was disappointing. Lost the ball way too many times in the final third and stalled out attacks
He was dangerous, but I do think he needs Dest behind him to be successful.
Nice
Our goal was a well worked set piece. Not sure who dreamed it up but it was refreshing to see.
Agreed! :)
Huh—It was a direct free kick?
He’s talking about the two runners across the area where Puli shot, obscuring Allison’s vision the ball. “Well worked” is maybe not the most precise term, but it was a well designed free kick.
I suppose I mean that it worked as designed, causing confusion and misdirection so the keeper would leave that corner of the goal exposed.
The downvote brigade is a bummer. Sorry about that. It's just banter and you are just stating your own opinion here. All good.
I guess my comment initially was just to point out that it was clearly something that was worked on and coordinated in training, and that it appeared to be executed exactly as designed, with the desired results. Agreed! It was nice to see and I hope it’s a sign of more to come :)
Very Kellyesque performance from Turner against Brazil tonight
Turner is my least favorite player to have to be hard on but he deserved it last match and did everything a keeper could do to redeem himself this match like the good man he is. Happy for you man keep that mentality up through Copa.👏
He had a brilliant second half and kept us in the game, but that had to make up for three terrible halves before that.
The goal Brazil scored was a direct result of his poor distribution. Of course he had lots of good distributions at other points, some of which led directly to chances.
BJ Callaghan, I know this was all you big dawg 😭😭😤
Brave and impressive performance by us against a very dangerous side after the 5-1 loss. I’ll take it. Alisson actually avoided our win. Good comeback from 5-1.
Cringe ass music on the broadcast
Brazil is diiiirty every time we touched the ball we were thrown to the ground or held so our players couldn’t go anywhere. For instance after the free kick at the end of the game when turner made the save with the entire Brazilian team in the box and tried to run to get the ball up field to our strikers who where all alone and not one but two strikers grabbed him by the arm so he couldn’t…

Clear yellow, shame the ref didn’t give one. Also should’ve carded the player who tried to pull Robinson back late in the game.
Still team GGG out, but the boys put in quite the performance tonight. Massive result going into the tournament
You can’t discount the coach getting his players prepared. National team coach is the last guy these players listen to but they listened and played hard against Brazil after the debacle against Columbia. That’s what you want from this level of coach. Damnit I’m in gs corner now.
Getting players to play hard every game is a prerequisite. It's not a reason to keep a coach who's incredibly tactically inept
Beautiful performance. I thought we would lose 12-0 tbf. Just so much firepower. Turner motm.
Honestly think Allison was MOTM. He is the only reason we don’t win this, perhaps handily.
Can’t be mad at that. They both held it down. I hope they swapped kits.
I'm so happy
USA WINS 1-1
Matt Turner needs extreme temps to perform his best. It’s either frozen dick or massive SWASS.
Proud of our boys
These TNT interviews are kinda brutal
We’re gonna win the whole thing!!! 😂
Our striker never gets any looks no matter what this is an issue with Gregg, ever since he took over
Why would we play through our forwards when they are arguably the weakest position on the field?
It’s how we play, it’s not conducive to the forwards we have
I hope turner and Alison swapped jerseys
Crazy what a turnaround Scally had in game. He started off sending perfect back passes to set up Brazilian attackers. And then flipped a switch some how.
USA could have won like 3-1 but it is what it is
You could say the same for Brazil. Both keepers made big saves.
We got a tie against Brazil before we got GTA6
Under appreciated comment
Really happy with the result, a good look. Now let's kick some ass in Copa America
Not today ledge, I'll take some steps back.
Underrated comment
What's crazy is we should have won. This was the most anxious I've ever been in an international friendly
Eh we probably should have been down 3-1 in the first half. Obviously thrilled that we turned it around, incredible result. But I think we were pretty fortunate to still be in the match at the break
Both teams took it hard for a friendly. Was a very fun match that means absolutely nothing.
Does the Continental Classico mean NOTHING to you?!
brought to you by ALLSTATE?!?!?!?
Youre in good hands!
Great for both teams tbh. Copa is right around the corner and this was a great prep
Lol yep was a lot of fun to watch though
Still 80*F with 92% humidity after the match ends. Wild!
I can sleep a little better this time around. Better performance this time 👏🏼👏🏼
Much better performance, lots of positives from the back 5, still need significant improvement from the attackers and the creative output from midfield. Agreed tbh. I think our midfield did a really job in our low block, but they were pretty dire progressing the ball through the middle and getting it to the strikers. Whoever's up top has been completely isolated.
Balo does have 6 goal contributions in 11 caps
lol dumbass
Lick my balls
Well, not losing to Brazil for only our second time ever in history does mean something. “History” made. Good bounce back from the Colombia debacle. Onto Copa America!
Vini wasn't very impressive. Unsure if we shut him down or he was just off it tonight.
We doubled and tripled him all night. Basically wanted to make sure someone else had to break us down. Weah and Mckennie were supporting Scally/Moore every time Vini was on the ball.
He hasn’t historically been at his best for Brazil.
He really isn’t that good for Brazil compared to Madrid bro
He plays as more of a creator vs goal scorer for Brazil
Scally is a mofo’n shut-down man
What an excellent 1-1 win!
Great performance
Could’ve gone either way…. But as an American, we deserved it more. Way to bounce back after Colombia
Huge Improvement from the Colombia Match, If we play like this in the Copa America, then we probably have some luck making it to the Semis hopefully.
We had best two opportunities of the second half. Could have won. But happy w our performance.
Turner had the game of his life, rly glad for him, he rly needed this after his season at Forest
Don't care about Colombia. This was fun.
Liked this a lot more. Not sure if it being a friendly matters or not but that was promising.
Sucks we only get one friendly to prepare but I’ll take it. Would’ve loved to play a team like Colombia as well but whatever
What’s a Colombia? You mean a Columbia, SC?
World Cup Game beginning with Sandstorm instead of the FIFA anthem!
McKennie rapping with Vinnie Jr there at the end, as one does.
Vini out there wearing Camavinga’s hair
Well. GGG and the boys did everything that was needed from this performance (I think we’re still a bit tactically inept against low block teams). We’ve only given these performances against MX. I want to see this intensity every game. Make the fans believe in it.
My biggest takeaway is Kyle Martino out
GGG haters in shambles
I don't envy the security staff at Camping world. All the boozed up Yanks and Brazil fans walking back are gonna start all sorts of shit
To paraphrase the New York Post “USA win 1-1”
Matt Turner and Gregg redemption arc??
Concacaf ref nearly cost us the game. Lets tugs etc. against Robinson go, calls the Vini Jr dive as a free kick.
And *Mexican* VAR saves the day
👏👏👏👏
This kinda feels like U.S. beats Brazil 1-1. Regardless, much better performance, definitely didn't feel like a friendly.
Such a fun match to watch. I really thought we'd struggle, which makes the result that much better.
USA with a dominant 1:1 draw
So CONCACAF bounced back after initial embarrassments.
Anyone can be anyone on any given night. The consistency is what makes tournament winners.
Im not a vinni hater but at the same time…😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
if he wasn't tired he scores that probably
Turner for president!
Fair result, open game both sides had opportunities. Good for Turner , a great bounce back especially from the last game. USA should be encouraged, Brazil is average but its still just a friendly.
Good result!
I already forgot about last game 🔥
Matt turner is the reason we tied that game He’s also the reason we didn’t lose that game ⚽️ is weird
Im ngl. Good shit by the team today.
First draw. Gotta be a sign things as a whole are moving in the right direction
Brazil will score this corner.
Ooof. That was silly of you.
Let's just hope we put in the same performances at Copa and get at least one signature win.
Telemundo named Turner the MVP
can't disagree
Both keepers saved their teams
As a keeper I love when BOTH keepers are making big time saves
Agreed. Allison was immense
Good tie. Not a fan of them playing out the back against a team like Brazil.
We played out from the back great. Their only goal came from the only time we decided to go long in the first half. It's pretty clear these guys can play out from the back when they're on it.
Same here. Granted we did it well. But it was scary as shit, and could have gone very bad.
and yet, they did it well
it went pretty well!
Wonder who got Vini's jersey.
Mckennie!? He was rapping there at the end like they were bros.
Turner turned it around, probably MOTM second half.
Robinson should have gotten awarded a foul and a free kick outside box other way. Ended that way for Brazil
Robinson did not excite this game.
##WE BEAT REAL MADRID
Haha!! Hell ya
A hard fought, unexpected, historical draw against Brazil. for all intent and purpose I'll happily take it
We got some great shots on their goal. Kind of crazy we didn’t score more. Good on the goal keep I guess
I wonder what the xG are, I feel like both teams will be over 1.
Vini is one of the most annoying people in world soccer
why?
Why? Literally not even that bad.
He is extremely provocative and always starting shit with players and talking shit to fans. He’s also a chronic diver and throws his hands up every time he doesn’t get a call. Racism is never the answer and nobody should have to deal with that, but there’s a shit ton of black people in LaLiga. I never said he was a bad person. I like a lot of what he’s trying to do by bringing attention to the racism in Spain. He’s just got a ridiculous ego and is extremely whiney
Literally did none of that tonight. I think Spain is just very racist and don’t like seeing a black dude tearing up la liga.
Eto, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo (Brazilian), Henry, Toure all were world class in Spain and we didnt hear about this
It’s the same reason bruno gets shit. They just kinda have punchable faces tbh. Ronaldinho was way more flashy when he played than anyone.
Whatever. If you believe it’s the “punchable face” rather than the constant taunting of players and fans, you can think what you want.
K
What a fucking bounce back performance. That was epic. We should’ve won, but it’s amazing that I can even say that.
Agree. I was very negative about the team and coach, but that’s a great bounce back. That’s on the coach to get them right and he came through. Good job G
Now everyone can shut up about the Columbia game
Apparently not, the terrible pass by Turner was apparently poor tactics from GGG by some people on here
The Columbia University Lions?
Alexa...play "Hulk Hogan Real American"
Vini is wearing hair extensions..
It’s been ages since we had a goalie be MotM
Alright Gregg. You did alright, man. Lets get it done in Copa.
Amazing match from Turner. So happy for him
We almost actually won. Just weren't clinical enough
Crazy how we still won
We'll get them in double overtime
We really might have if this game had OT. Our boys look fit. Robinson must have run a marathon out there.
What a fun freaking game
So how does this compare to the Mexico result
Better. Much better.
Vini can't believe he's just drawn us
We just drew against Brazil.
First ever draw versus Brazil. Is this the biggest single result in Berhalter's career?
England WC still, this was a friendly lol Edit: and you could also make an argument for any of the Mexico NL wins.
Fair lol.
Nah it’s still the draw against England bc that was a World Cup game
Fair lol.
Lmao I get it. Living in the moment 😂
England draw was probably just as good
Fair lol.
We drew against Brazil in a friendly you'll never sing that
GREAT GAME FUYS
Martinelli is garbage. How does he get called up to Brazil?
Haha spot the Spurs fan.
Bc he's better than Richarlison
Richarlison G/A every 109 mins. Martinelli G/A every 200 mins. Not even close
If he's better, then why isn't his name on the team sheet over Martinelli?
Because he’s injured and missed the last 3 games of the season? He’s consistently been the starting 9 for Brazil when healthy. This is not a good argument for you.
Tyler Adams missed the entire season and is rehabbing with his national team and he's consistently been the starting 6 when healthy. What's Richarlison's excuse?
Martinelli 🍾 Richarilison 💩
That’s a better argument than the other guy that was asking why an injured Richy isn’t starting
I literally said he was better that Richarlison
Great draw
1-1-18 😤😤
Baby steps.
Great game. Lots of chances, a lot of positives, but some things to improve on.
That was a winnable game, but it was also a very losable game. Big ups to Matt Turner.
