Yeah, but does anyone disagree that Wales is a good flag? Like generally, dragon on flag = good
The only reason you'll die on that hill is because there's a whole settlement up there and everyone's just living their lives until they pass away.
Or have I just only been remembering the options that are biased with my own?

Alaska. I think it's so brilliantly simplistic, yet so mesmerizing.
It makes perfect sense! The Big Dipper is part of the constellation Ursa Major, literally Big Bear, and bears are native to Alaska. And you can use the Big Dipper to find the North Star—the arrangement on the flag is accurate—and Alaska is the northernmost state. Love it
i will defend flags that are more art than flag

You can see several on this page: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag\_of\_the\_Republic\_of\_Venice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Republic_of_Venice)
One example, the de facto 1922-1997 flag:

The government unofficially pondered on this after 2005 when the King was deposed. Since the country became a republic in 2008, there were attempts at the time to remove everything tied to the monarchy, including national symbols.
There was extensive pushback from all sectors as the flag was so innately tied to the national identity. It also stands as a symbol of national sovereignty and not having a colonial past.
Hypothetically, if the text was eliminated would California's flag be better, worse, or the same?
I don't think it's worse. If anything California has a good flag *despite* the text.
It’s unbalanced without the text, taking it away leaves the bear alone in a void looking dumb. And, most importantly, not ripping an atom apart as good bears should.
Exactly. I don't think anybody is seriously arguing California is a bad flag as a whole (CGP Grey aside). What the argument is that the text on the flag adds somewhere between nothing and actively negative to the flag, depending on how much you like/tolerate text on flags
You could remove the text and the Californian flag would still be ridiculously iconic, and frankly, I'm fairly certain a good chunk of people who are only casually interested in flags wouldn't even notice the difference until it's pointed out
All of us here in California would certainly notice. The flag is as universally loved as anything can be. The bear and the star are the most iconic elements, but the California Republic text symbolizes our relative independence and our ability to forge our own path and create a unique identity that separates us from the rest of the states due to our huge population and political/economic influence. The text stays… or else!
They are most visible on poles, and that should be the standard flags specifically are judged on.
And [it will look dumb half of the time](https://64.media.tumblr.com/19faeadc6341344eb7725c28c214d097/tumblr_naiksaDzLI1sn6a7so1_1280.jpg)
What a flag should be judged on is how well it resonates with its constituency. It's visability in the places it's often seen is the horse, not the cart.
The text is part of the whole here, and plays a role in establishing the state's independent streak and place in history. It's a perfectly resonant flag, and one of the most successful flags in the US. Don't mess with perfection!

Cyprus 🇨🇾
I don't know what people generally think of it, but someone told me they disliked it once and I have to disagree.

British canton flags
There's something about the "simplicity" of a base color, a union jack in the corner and a national symbol on the right speaks to me
I'm biased, given its my province - but I will die on the hill that the New Brunswick (Canada) flag, looks good even though it breaks some modern design rules

The flag of Colorado is a perfect example of how text on a flag can be done well: As the letter "C" is a graphical component of the flag as opposed to plain text, it stands out from the crowd for doing something so ingenious and unique.
I still think CGPGrey not giving it S-tier is a crime. When I moved to the state I was blown away how it was everywhere, on everything. More so than California (where I’ve also lived), maybe as much as Texas? As a native New Yorker, we don’t do anything with our flag. Though the seal is pretty cool.
https://preview.redd.it/l2wqt0g6ei9d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1232b4ff9d63bf34079cc85efb608339371d03a
The flag of Alberta. It’s quite good.
Yes it’s a seal on a bedsheet, but firstly - it’s Canadian, and distinct insofar as it’s the only flag like that that we have, unlike in America where it’s easily confusable for others. Secondly, the actual seal is fairly nice looking, and represents Alberta’s landscape / history very succinctly.
Would there be better flag design possibilities for Alberta? Sure there would be, 100%. If it gets changed, so be it. But there’s nothing inherently bad about this flag, and it seems to draw a lot of flak due to the likes of CGP Grey and the so-called “rules” that many people obsess over.
California. Don't care that it has words on it, and don't care what CGP Gray says. It's one of the best state flags. Not as good as New Mexico, but better than most others.
https://preview.redd.it/qb6nsy7v3k9d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d944400f775a2cb1c3091c8e78be62512bb0afbb
Haiti, Haiti, HAITI! People shit on it for the white square, but really I think that makes it unique. Plus it’s extremely recognizable. There’s only one other country you could confuse it for (Liechtenstein, which has happened before, and has since been fixed).
https://preview.redd.it/bporqso7ci9d1.jpeg?width=1072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb9615ce6f996d0ac46a53f4a45775484c030bf3
Only picture I have with the Union Jack
As a trans person I would say, the trans flag.
But for real, I really loved the Salvador de Madariaga proposal for the European union flag, representing the European capitals as stars in a constellation. Not the easiest design to draw free hand, and by that alone it breaks a lot of rules but i love the way it looks and what it's representing.
https://preview.redd.it/rpeqa840kk9d1.png?width=2400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d21d634d9698209daa484f573d656ec8842d35ec
Wow!! Thats a really interesting concept. I do agree on the trans flag, although I love versions of the non binary flag where the colors are a little less saturated and bright
i sewed myself my own trans pride flag, and i ended up using toned down, less saturated colors for the blue and the pink because that's what i had on hand. you would like it :D.
Maryland and California are both perfect flags that have extremely resonant places among their constituents. People who redesign them generally forget what the flag guidelines are - an almost surefire route to produce a reasonably good flag, but certainly not the only route.
Of all the state flags with seals, Kentucky's is the best.
https://preview.redd.it/zmlzyfif4i9d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c92a411600366e915377a2893c1c1ce1486fc57b
Virginia. Everything about it is great. The depiction of Liberty killing Tyranny. Sic semper tyranus. The boob.
My one critique is that we should be including the reverse design on the back which shows liberty, justice, and some other chick living together in peace

Love this flag ever since I came to Vermont for college
Well I’ll tell you I fucking hate the Colorado flag even tho everyone likes it. But I lived in South Carolina long enough to be obligated to defend the palmetto and crescent moon.
I absolutely love the Austrian Flag with the eagle on it. Same for Poland.
For a meme answer I love that weird monkey flag design with chinese characters and a tie-die colour scheme someone submitted for the minisota flag design contest
Modern flag design is typically hideous and overly corporate, a mix of too much and not enough
Also negative space art doesn't belong on flags, stick to stars, bars, crosses and lines dammit!
Pennsylvania is the best seal on bedsheet flag by a mile.

South Koreas people republics flag (this will be the flag when we reunify trust me) https://preview.redd.it/z9rrjtgpwg9d1.png?width=541&format=png&auto=webp&s=590034a7cec6c01c21a4afb78111651c5e827c84
Dutch flag. The OG tricolor.
Texas, baby!
British canton flags There's something about the "simplicity" of a base color, a union jack in the corner and a national symbol on the right speaks to me
Greenland, every single time https://preview.redd.it/cazsokemri9d1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f63c52dd03bc8b1f5964723c864fe99f8ae7811
I really love the Nordic flag family. They are simple but beautiful, and it is clear we share a common cultural history.
The Japanese prefectural flags. No, they are not "corporate", they're *mon*.

Kinky
Union Jack
It's a pretty clever design honestly, I just kinda wish it represented Northern Ireland and Wales better
Yes, maybe add the Welsh dragon in the middle.
i like the Greece flag a lot. just two colours but a unique design. 🇬🇷
I'm biased, given its my province - but I will die on the hill that the New Brunswick (Canada) flag, looks good even though it breaks some modern design rules https://preview.redd.it/0tx5ewbtdl9d1.png?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=71b55408e24072323e8fa739aac851f707377bcb
Controversial, I know https://preview.redd.it/o0124ko57j9d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95c602feb15cdce84edd115751111a7cb5124136
Flag of Pernambuco, Brazil. https://preview.redd.it/kshyahc3sf9d1.jpeg?width=268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88e0b1ee591c1efa6037ca2a44489fc88daea644
mozambique 🇲🇿 no matter what anyone says, it will still be my personal favorite country flag.
Maryland! Some say it's gaudy or too out-of-date. I love the traditional heraldry.
Minnesotas flag. 😉
I will fight with all my heart for the new MN flag. 1) I like it, 2) the MAGA folks in MN are extra butthurt about the flag change
Old or new
https://preview.redd.it/mucg79bmmh9d1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f19a3b30cecf6610a4e0ea444703be99f060ddf7
New. The old one is atrocious.
California. Every rule has an exception. It's not automatically a bad flag because it has text and to think so is ridiculous.
ohio’s flag! it might not have the most interesting colors but i love the unique shape! i also love the flag of nepal for the same reason🇳🇵
Maryland forever
https://preview.redd.it/l2wqt0g6ei9d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1232b4ff9d63bf34079cc85efb608339371d03a The flag of Alberta.
Maryland for life, I don’t live there anymore , but it’s still in my heart ❤️
Paraíba flag goes hard and nobody will ever make me doubt it
Virgina's flag. Who doesn't love some Lady Liberty titty action!
Angola 🇦🇴
Sicily and isle of man
Tip: sort by controversial
Despite the ideology associated with it, the CSA battle flag goes hard. Shame, really.
https://preview.redd.it/9ga4covfvi9d1.png?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe5eb4d1e90a846dbcc82845d0c48e84a48892d0 Flag of Hawaii my beloved
California. Don't care that it has words on it, and don't care what CGP Gray says. It's one of the best state flags. Not as good as New Mexico, but better than most others.
https://preview.redd.it/qb6nsy7v3k9d1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d944400f775a2cb1c3091c8e78be62512bb0afbb Haiti, Haiti, HAITI! People shit on it for the white square, but really I think that makes it unique. Plus it’s extremely recognizable. There’s only one other country you could confuse it for (Liechtenstein, which has happened before, and has since been fixed).
I think the square has far too much detail in it to be good, it needs to be simplified
The Flag of Tibet should become a national flag again. Such history and culture to be erased is just wrong.
https://preview.redd.it/bporqso7ci9d1.jpeg?width=1072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb9615ce6f996d0ac46a53f4a45775484c030bf3 Only picture I have with the Union Jack
I do agree on the trans flag, although I love versions of the non binary flag where the colors are a little less saturated and bright
i sewed myself my own trans pride flag, and i ended up using toned down, less saturated colors for the blue and the pink because that's what i had on hand. you would like it :D.
the ones in my flair are cool
New Vojvodina flag It is simple with good symbolism and it has a connection to Serbian flag
Wait, you love the blue with a state seal, and don’t like the pine tree with star?
Other way around. I love the pine tree and loathe the state seal version
Right on, I’m with you.
🇩🇰 Dannebrog. Flag of the Kingdom of Denmark
The 7th Cavalry guidon.
The old flag of Pocatello. That was ugly, but it was good ugly. We miss you Pocatello flag
Oregon. Beautiful flag that has two different images on either side, and one is a beaver.
Falklands islands flag is the best one. They even added a sheep
Bourbon restoration flag was peak
Papua New Guinea. It's my favorite national flag, i love it 🇵🇬
https://preview.redd.it/uw4wgqzw8j9d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5db202d7061b1ddba502a41b9f1c7583e614deec Love this flag ever since I came to Vermont for college
Uzbekistan's flag, Albania's flag, Germany's flag, and a Pride flag. (I'm LGBTQ+)
The old pocatello flag is so bad that its good
Virginia should be the only state allowed to keep the seal-on-bedsheet design, on account of it being metal as fuck.
Flags with birds are immediately cooler, it reminds me of the Geneva flag. If anyone ever tried to change it id throw hands
All of them. Flag redesigns invariably suck
〓〓 this one
I have two 1) The Union Jack 2) RAF Flag
I love the Czech flag because almost half of it is Slovakia
The state flag of Maryland. Also Hawai'i.
Is the New Mexico flag too basic of an answer?
Love these. I also like the South Carolina flag.
Modern flag design is typically hideous and overly corporate, a mix of too much and not enough Also negative space art doesn't belong on flags, stick to stars, bars, crosses and lines dammit!
Barbados. Gorgeous colors, and it has a mother flipping trident on it.
Arizona
Bhutan, probably. Or Nepal.

There is this one city in Russia I think it’s called zhelezenorgsk, it’s a bear splitting an atom and is my favorite flag ever
The shitty flag I made last year
Qing Dynasty, Joseon, and Rhode Island
British colony flags are the best
I hate most of the blue background flags except Pennsylvania, which I think actually looks great with the horses on the side
https://preview.redd.it/4rm9lc9yyh9d1.png?width=263&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47deb269d39881e7fc4ce5a480bbb83f39087fc1
I was hoping someone would say Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is the best seal on bedsheet flag by a mile. https://preview.redd.it/vzcupm2bni9d1.png?width=1054&format=png&auto=webp&s=bca1c01062a8aaa97e35556a7332ca6e29f0b9ce
