throwawayemerald23

No SACD? 🤨

StupidlyStupid222

No Reel to Reel 🤨

throwawayemerald23

No 78? 🤨

StupidlyStupid222

No minicd?🤨

Collectorcolin

Stoooooooop I forgot 🥹 i gotta get out of moms house to even have room for one

pregnantcartifan

Maybe cause 8 tracks sound utter shit 😭

coleopterology

They do if you don’t repair your tapes or restore your player! 75-80% of every 8 track tape in the wild needs new pressure pads and will sound like shit until they are replaced. Do you really think people would have bought so many of them back in the day if they sounded so bad at the time?

h8Maplesyrup

I https://preview.redd.it/1ultnxv91g6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36e3ddce3f35c4103be8c5c65a040adeb467567e Don’t you mean “all 4 formats”?

National_Swimming_42

reel to reel ?

The_Original_Gronkie

Forgot 8 track.

Acceptable-Motor-940

This collection brings a tear to my eye.

Collectorcolin

Is that a floppy disc wtf am I looking at in the middle 😂

h8Maplesyrup

It’s a Minidisc. Came out in late 90’s. Sonys replacement for the cassette. Didn’t go over so well in North America but Europe and Japan loved them. Check us out at r/minidisc

ChutneyRiggins

Minidisc was so cool. I only had one prerecorded one. I made my own mixes usually.

That_Random_Kiwi

Never had a pre-recorded one, but owned a recordable MD device for recording my DJ sets back in the day...they were hella cool for their time!

ralioc

I did the same! I had so many mixes and preshow intros on MD. I was early in the game. But yes, it was a cool technology when it was introduced for sure!

EffectiveBowler7690

I was a big fan of MiniDisc. The players were so tiny and portable.

Collectorcolin

Yo thank you for informing me bout them had no idea, but typical of North America to reject cool things

DeathMonkey6969

Check out Techmoan on YouTube he covers a lot of weird and obscure formats

FauxReal

Holy shit, you got Singles on Minidisc? I don't know why but I think that's cool. I think being that devoted to the soundtrack is cool. It's a good soundtrack! I hope you do it with The Crow, Repo Man, and Less than Zero too! I would like to get into MD, but do I really need to start dumping money into a dead format like that? Maybe if I had a lot more money. It would be fun to have an MD player in my car's dashboard.

h8Maplesyrup

It was more of a grunge era thing. I have the prerecorded MD’s for Pearl Jam’s Ten but I’m missing the record. And I also have Alice in Chains MTV live but missing the cassette.

Mal-a-Propism

Best movie soundtrack!!

BLOOOR

I've heard the CD, I've got the cassette, haven't heard the vinyl but I got the 192/24 Hi Res files and those sounds amazing. How's the Minidisc compare?

FaithlessnessWest533

I finally scored a copy on cassette and the tape was fucked :/

Stinky_Fartface

Reel to reel? Edison cylinders? DAT?

swedish_meatball_man

For real. I listen to reel-to-reel as much as any other format.

Collectorcolin

Stinky fart face, I get it. I fucked up, tell me more

Stinky_Fartface

LOL you’re good. Keep exploring music in any form you can. It’s endlessly rewarding!

DoctorOctagonapus

Get on YouTube and look up Techmoan. He covers various obscure formats on his channel.

Funkybeatzzz

8 tracks make it four forms. I've got a ton of Beatles 8 tracks.

Ok-Function1920

Reel to reel = five

Mysterions

I found a Bill Cosby reel to reel in a Goodwill the other day. I felt weird buying it because it's Bill Cosby, but it was only $1 and a curious old piece of media.

BTsBaboonFarm

Do we count things like SACD, DVD-A, Blu-Ray Audio, etc. as separate from CD? Could be a lot more

littlemoesyzlak

Wait til you see my HitClips collection

shabby47

Ugh. After upgrading my system to Pocket Rockers I don’t know how anybody can still listen to hitclips.

Plus_Carpenter_5579

there's more than 4

Funkybeatzzz

Didn't mean to imply that was it. I can name several more but the rest are more obscure, except for digital, and harder to find.

RIPcompo

I got the Dre album on Wax cylindrical tubes when it came out so there's five.

Now-done

I’d argue unless you have three wax cylinders you do not have a collection

Dirkinshire

I do all my high fidelity listening on wire. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_recording

gojohnnygojohnny

In order, this is what I like to dig for, favorite to least: 78s 45s Cassettes 8-track tapes LPs/12" singles CDs VHS DVDs

Stock_Ad7369

Nearly the same, but w/ VHS and CDs swapped!

churreos

Lmao not the Drake vs Kendrick tape 😆 (pretty dope I seen it floating around Twitter earlier)

Collectorcolin

They did limit it to 250 originally but it’s back in stock and limitless at 16$

2daMooon

Cashing in on your FOMO.

KID_THUNDAH

Yes, I try to blow my money in as many ways as possible, CDs, Records, Cassettes, 8 tracks. collect 4k movies and VHS as well.

Hifi-Cat

Only records and CDs. Later files. What's kitties name?

Collectorcolin

Jupiter! Jupi tho really, only full names when trouble is being made 😂

Prudent-Data3524

Fragile is a great album

Collectorcolin

Lmao everyone but my Dad has told me this today, he hated Yes apparently

extrarogers

what album is on that lint roller?

GetDoofed

I buy whatever good music I can find for cheap

Collectorcolin

This the reply I been waiting for! Same or if I can find it at all on any form beside streaming

ZiggyMummyDust

There are more than 3 forms of media. I collect some 8 tracks too depending on the artist. Same with cassettes.

Collectorcolin

Cassettes is one of the 3 I meant and 8 tracks slipped my mind but do correct me

CharmingPromotion134

Yeah i like to listen to swans and some of there work simply just doesn’t translate well to vinyl. E.G the seer. In some cases the limitations of vinyl can be detrimental to some albums

Bighead_Joe

Now collect wax cylinders lol.

Sherslide

I have countless CDs for listening to in the car, a few hundred vinyl records for chilling at home, and a small handful of cassettes for camping/hiking etc. I just think they're neat :)

Collectorcolin

Very well put together I see, that’s how I’m trynna be. Except my car is too new for a CD player 🫠🫠

AetherKatMusic

I see four here: CDs, tapes, cat hair, and records!

Collectorcolin

Lmao you see that’s why I got what I call “cat hair roller” more then a lint roller

Squirrellybot

Not anymore, I took advantage of the Cassette resurgence and traded in for Vinyl. Seeing my 40oz. To Freedom go for $20 in a few short months was a trip.

LeVieuxLoup

I do now. I started with cassettes back in 2020, then earlier this year I began buying CDs, followed by vinyl last month.

Paulwhiteman1925

I do vinyl, shellac, wax cylinders, and CDs

twzoneq

Don’t forget about minidisc!

Allie-ooops

I also came here to yell about MiniDisc! There are dozens of us!

twzoneq

We are small in number but great in heart 🤣 We’re like the navy seals of physical music Minidisc squadron RISE UP! 🗣🔊

FullyGroanMan

Vinyl, cassette and lint brush. You know it!

dan_pyle

I have records, 8-tracks, cassettes, and CDs from over the years, but records are the only thing I’d say I really still collect except for a few rare cases where I’ll pick up a CD from one of my favorite bands in addition to the LP because I’ve been collecting their stuff all my life. But mostly it’s just records and digital music now.

Former_Balance8473

I have a bunch of cassettes from between when records died but CD wasn't out yet... but I wouldn't buy any now.

Reign256

Where's the wax cylinder?

vol18fan

Don’t forget video

gretabutton

I looks like my collection though the ages. Cheech and Chong and Robin Williams, had them. Yes, have them. You mush have the same taste as I do.

thefartsock

I do but it's vinyl, CD, and digital for my unholy trifecta.

ToxicDuck_Official

Nice Mazzy Star CD 🔥

Only_Serve_5931

Im considering getting into cassettes because record digging doesnt seem to yield much quality anymore and every used vinyl seems to be automatically around $20 in every country I try to dig in now.

xDENTALPLANx

My favourite format to listen to albums is on musical birthday cards

mustardman

I, too, collect the three important forms of media - records, CDs, and cat hair

S1lv3rsh4d0w9

There are occasionally things I want on any format I can get. https://preview.redd.it/od2z9dbjvi6d1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7716eec116c0506f6031b394c98736f5f1571731

t_stormz

Is that a Drake/Kendrick beef cassette?

The_Original_Gronkie

I own almost all those albums. The best is Yes: Fragile, which contains Roundabout, which has one of the most iconic bass lines in history.

shiromustdie

i do too! PS i love ya cat <3

Collectorcolin

Cat loves you, cat hates keeping fur on

suckingonmyhevos

I see that you also collect the 4th kind of media… fur

Collectorcolin

The main collection

AlienPathfinder

VHS is actually a very good audio format

wonko1980

Zappa is great!

fvgh12345

Reel to reel, 8 track, mini disc, Laserdisc/VHS /DVD concerts/music videos, cmon you gotta pump that up

BX_NYC_Phan

That’s an awesomely diverse collection of different artists!

Collectorcolin

Best thing I could hear! I wanna post the vinyl collection and see if people have a word for the type of listener I am. Very far left and rights

Desperate-Box5686

I used to play the Robin Williams Lp so much as a kid I’d drive my mom crazy. Also love Sheik Yerbouti and every Zappa pretty much!

Collectorcolin

Watermelon in Easter hay is what led me down the path of Zappa! He’s bizarre and brilliant. It’ll be my first listen to the Robin Lp tho, couldn’t pass it up as my first comic vinyl

styles-bitchley

Same thing with Reality…what a concept. I think I could recite the whole thing.

Choice_Student4910

I sold off my tape decks and 200+ cassettes last summer. Downsize move so I had to choose what to keep. Vinyl, upgraded my cd players and got a Wiim streamer. Not missing tapes at all now, especially the occasional warble.

Rickenbacker138

Love that minidisc

JakkSplatt

3? Vinyl, cassette, compact disc, 8 track, reel to reel, mini disc. I'm sure there's more.

National_Ad_3384

I’m just collecting Records and CDs I used to have a cassette player but it’s now gone sadly.

DeLa_Swole

I have every media version of Wu-Tang Clan’s 36 chambers. But that’s the only album I did that for

Geegsbiscuit

Yess!! I usually use tapes or CDs for shelves but vinyls are my favorite to collect!

Supahwezz78

No but, yes i love yes

hadexo

Just vinyl, but I see the appeal of cassette tapes. Got into vinyl because the sound of quality is lossless and the damn neat presentation 😂. Grew with cds and tape so I'm less inclined since I lived through that era.

Ruseriousmars

I have some Black Sabbath on VHS too. I'm pretty sure there are some concerts on laser disc. I've met some collectors who will try to collect everything released by their favorite band even if they have no means of playing it. I've thought about that but....life's to short for that from my perspective. Still I regret selling my laser disc collection 10 years or so. They are just so cool based upon their mass alone:) But the video quality .........

grrmuffins

I collect vinyl mostly but I do have a rare collection of cassettes because I'm obsessed with Ghetto Blasters.

Puzzleheaded-Car-479

Yes. And I have that same saffron box!

Internal_Swimmer3815

I do.

TiberSeptim12

I collect a ton of cassettes and vinyl both I love making mixtapes and spinning records as well I find both to be very fun and exciting to find in thrift stores when I can

tofusalad22

I do. Just whatever I can get my hands on. Some obscure 90’s bands haven’t been pressed to vinyl cause CD’s took over. Also tapes are cheap as fuck so I can always find that cheaper than an OOP record.

Collectorcolin

Can’t blame you for that at all. My grail is chocolate and cheese by ween but it’s like $ 100-30 and also 2 vinyl new could be 100$ depending, definitely 3 new ones close to 100$ everytime but it’s what? Like 14$ for a new CD, used ones being ridiculously cheap in some cases

stormaggetton

My bookshelf is full of 12" records, my car is full of CDs, my desk is covered in cassette tapes. Plus the spare live DVD, a few dozen 7" singles, and one very special 9" single. No 8 tracks here yet; even my near-addiction has its limits.

periloustrail

Oh yes. Vinyl for things I find in store/used usually or if a release is that good. Same with CDs and tapes. I love electronic music where a lot of the artists still release on different forms of media. Other genres too but particularly for electronic.

garyfugazigary

i have Fugazi's Instrument on cd,cassette, vinyl, dvd and vhs

realmspider

thought the lint roller was a hitachi for a second

GalaxyEyes541

I slowed waaaay down on records this past year or 2, but occasionally will buy one or two if I’m not sure i’ll see them again. Really been trying to up my tape collection while prices aren’t too bad, I grew up listening to tapes so sound quality is no issue for me as long as I own it. CDs… ehh… I have a few for my car for when I run out of data or otherwise have no alternative. 8 tracks I adore and love the warm crispy ass sound on my machine but it’s so hard to find any notable ones, let alone in good condition.

olenatureboy34

Just completed my first, Enya Watermark.

Coldsnap

No love for the 7" single?

MassiveMartian

i see cat i like cat

coleopterology

There’s a hell of a lot more than 3, my dude. And yes, I collect them all.

That_Random_Kiwi

Hell no...not had a CD player in the house or car for 10+ years...3 turntable though lol

Ok-Button4406

Up in smoke soundtrack goes hard

weesgegroet

adding my Sony mini disc makes 4 (the 8-track player my dad uses doesn't count)

kofmasters

4!

studiord

I know someone who collects his favourite albums in different formats (at least 3 formats, sometimes 4 including open reel) and has multiple vinyl pressings plus tapes released in different countries of each album. To my knowledge he has at least 500 favourite albums across genres. Possibly more.

OldTimeyWizard

You don’t collect HitClips? The ultimate format?

butterslut6969

SACD?

M1RR0R

There's nothing quite like a box full of cassettes for a road trip

Jayy28288

I usually stick to cd and vinyl mostly cuz tapes have my least favorite sound

Different-Memory90

Yes! Some albums sound better on different mediums. I like my really heavy stuff and Lofi stuff on tape. Classic tapes from the 70s to the 90s are cheap and fun to collect. CDs are great for the convenience of being able to burn files to the computer and my preferred means of checking out any new album. Also, jazz, classical, ambient and electronic music that have very quiet passages are best experienced on CD to avoid tape hiss or vinyl surface noise. That being said, if I truly love an album I need to own it on vinyl. Preferably a first pressing.

Purple_Monkey34

Not really cassette as much as the others but if it was only released on a specific media i get it such as some of my Wrestling CD's, Chef Aid and Simpsons CD's

I-Am-The-Warlus

Only CD & Vinyl

SnorvusMaximus

No minidisc?

SexDrugsAndMarmalade

For music, I have CD, DVD, Blu-ray, vinyl, cassette, USB and digital.

Groningen1978

I grew up with all 3. Used tape the most in my teens as it was the most affordable and portable. I would record from the radio, rented CD's from the library and other people's record/cd collections. Also band rehearsals. When around 14 years old in the early '90s I also started buying my own records but never that many. CD's took over for me around the time I was moving houses a lot in the late '90s to around 2010 but went back to pretty much only buying records. I do end up with new tapes and CD's sometimes when something is not available on vinyl but I'm not really actively seeking them out.. I still have all my tapes and CD's though, so I guess you could call it a collection, but they're somewhat tucked away in boxes.

pirate_jimble

Ha, I picked up that Mazzy Star album on CD just last week!  I collect CDs because I rip them onto Plex and have Plexamp as my on-the-go music service.

4Nissans

You’re forgetting 8 tracks, reel to reel tapes, MD’s, DCC’s and a couple others.

guitarholic2008

I bought my copy of Reality... What a Concept for 25 cents, unopened, back in '93

Collectorcolin

I mean 3.99 isn’t the worst inflation ever 😂

leoxsavage

Of course

kraftymiles

Of course. Tapes for my office, records for the library and cds for the car. Cds at my Local record store are 10 for £5 second hand so it's really easy to build my collection back up.

_5had0w

🙋‍♂️

Neko-the-gamer

I do too, sometime I even buy the same album on different formats, like for example sometimes with albums from the 90s I buy them on CDs and cassette because the vinyl is shit expensive and the cassette is a more budget analog way to experience that album in an analog fashion like vinyl. But sometimes I buy the same album on multiple formats just because I like it so much I want to have multiple copies on different formats

CrazeeEyezKILLER

I only collect *Daddy & Me* photo frames.

Anakim213

DRAKE VS KENDRICK!🔥🔥🔥I hope in an official release someday.

Wise_Shoulder_4829

Not as often now

cowman1206

I want to start collecting cassettes, but I need a player first

Emeraldheart12

Yes

shellmachine

Vinyl and tapes here, no CDs.

nyc-photooo

What about “8 track” tapes?

Ok_Astronomer_1308

Zappa and yes!!

Brettwon

I collect all 4!! 8 track, cassette, LP, and CD

[deleted]

Cat, rollers and remotes ? Yes i have quite the collection

Level-Steak9290

Having Cheech & Chong on vinyl and Mazzy Star on CD is illegal.

PepeFrogBoy

78 gang 4 lyfe.

apedap

Hell yeah

multiwirth_

I only do record my own tapes, so it's not really about collecting them. I get vinyl records and CDs for stuff that isn't available for purchase otherwise.

Abeblio

Oh yes, vinyls, CDs and cats, all 3 forms.

Dboogy2197

Sure do. My focus is on vinyl currently. But I switch every year or so.

AlternativeNearby596

I collect 4 forms of media. Records, cassette, CD and 8-track. I have thought about reel to reel, but running out of room.

supergimp2000

8-track?

brownyuio

Absolutely! Proud of my cassette and CD collection too!

Death_By_Dreaming_23

Depends on the release, but yes. I have some albums only released on cassette tapes, or vinyl, but sometimes I’m late to get those releases and I’m either left with the CD-R (if I’m early enough, I can get the version with the OBI) or digital versions. Yes, you read that right, lol, some album releases are made on CD-R.

Inside-Pass2401

You know I got some fire lint rollers boi ❤️😍

UranicPine77

Whatever has my favorite music on it im buying

throwitawaynow4512

Imagine thinking there were only 3 forms of vintage media

Objective_Head_5282

Was not expecting to find Sheik Yerbouti on here but I'm very pleasantly surprised.

spot_moskowitz

I collect 4: vinyl, cassette, CD, and cats

Bradddtheimpaler

No reel-to-reel? No 8track tapes? No minidiscs? Christ, you probably don’t even have a Laserdisc player for your movies.

fetus6feet-under

https://preview.redd.it/u9nr5dclmj6d1.jpeg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d78a4f37517390f1b20c99e73f773179e238c811 Thought I just had a spending problem glad to see I’m not the only one

Spirited-Office-5483

I don't have a tape thing so I don't collect also they weren't that popular in my country. Pretty much every tape I ever saw was pirates. I do have a original one in a drawer somewhere.

BahaMan69

All 3 of em lmao

808kaviar

Few cassettes but lot of MD, all 4 formats here

CoveredDrummer

Visual Artists hate this one simple trick!

Ok-Satisfaction3857

Guilty!

Shoehorse13

I still have my CDs and most of my cassettes but don't intentionally collect more. I'd probably go to reel to reel if I was looking for an additional medium to collect.

Chic1954

REEL TO REEL

Pitiful-Hall6881

Not only do I collect all 3 formats but sometimes of the same release.

chinookhooker

DAT digital audio tape, don’t forget

Far-Fortune-8381

my lint roller collection is getting out of hand. it’s ripping my family apart but i can’t stop. it’s all that brings me some semblance of joy in these trying times.

ralioc

If it's one of my favorites, I have copies in all available formats... even 8-track lol. Grease soundtrack is a prime example. That one is so terrible with collectors OCD I have vhs, laderdisc, CED, dvd, Blu and uhd. I'm a little crazy like that on very few titles.

TedDanger1133

What do u mean "only 3" what about reel-to-reel and 8track

1-FlipsithfloP-3

12” , 10” & 7” . Affirmative.

MoreThanWYSIWYG

No reel to reel?

FauxReal

Technically yes because I still have my tapes and CDs from high school. And coincidentally I bought a few CDs at Goodwill for my cousin a few days ago because she's got a player in her car. But I don't actually have a player and my only tape deck is in a vintage JVC DC-7 boom box. I got some stuff out of storage and start cataloging my tapes n Discogs this week... I am surprised at how much people are paying for some of the old industrial and punk tapes.

NikeyAFCA

8 Track, Reel 2 Reel, I love all formats.

sarcofaguy

How’s the quality on the beef tape? Wanting to pick one up but a bit skeptical

Collectorcolin

Super solid in my opinion on both Walkman and thru speakers

hello-cthulhu

Love me some Mazzy Star! Actively, I'm only collecting LPs, CDs and digital - 320 kbs mp3. I have a small cassette collection, but they are older. I'm not currently buying cassettes, because I don't have a working player, and it seems silly to collect a media type that I can't even play. (I did collect some vinyl before I had a good turntable, but that was only because I knew I'd get one eventually.) Cassettes seem like a strange media type to collect today. In many ways, they seem like the worst of all worlds. They made sense back in the day, because the audio quality was (at least initially, before tape hiss took its toll) better than vinyl, and they made sense if you needed a media type that was portable - you could carry it around and play it in a Walkman or in your car. Believe me, I've tried to play vinyl in the car, and it doesn't end well. So cassettes made sense. Plus, you could record your own cassettes - from vinyl, from radio, from other cassettes, eventually from CDs, and even from TV - and you could make mixtapes. But nowadays, those are all obsolete. And really, once CD-Rs came on the scene, and once car stereos and Discmans got developed well enough to play CDs despite shakes and bumps, cassettes really lost their raisan d'etre. The disadvantages of cassettes became more obvious - being smaller meant smaller cover art, the way cassette audio quality decays over time, the propensity of cassette tape to get tangled up in your player, and overall inferior sound quality relative to digital. Cassettes don't really have the romance or "warm sound" of vinyl LPs, but also lake the robust, perfect audio of digital. The only real advantage I see to cassettes is the price point. What's odd there is that this used to be vinyl's advantage, relative to CDs. CDs were the prestige format. I'm old enough to remember when albums were new releases, typically the cassette and vinyl would both be around $9-$10 at most, and the CD $15-$16. Somehow, vinyl LPs got to be in the $20s, and I frequently see new vinyl in the $30s. CDs fell a little - I see ~$10 now, and cassettes seem to be a tad less, often $8-$9. So - excluding the collection of older cassettes that I do keep in a good environment - I have vinyl, CDs, and mp3s. Those are my holy trinity. I like all three, and see all three having their own distinct advantages and qualities making them worth having. None are "superior", as it really depends on what your purposes are, as well as what kind of equipment you have to play them.

bravemenrun

No minidisc?

Pretend-Studio6583

I’ve got dreamboat Annie on vinyl, cassette, CD, and 8 track.

Ham1ltron

https://preview.redd.it/qs1kmwvhlk6d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3112a26be7fe113781f67f9b92443508eb8027c8

IHOPSausageLink

Vinyl for me, but wish I had kept all the cassettes we had growing up! That was my first music media.

urababyy

Cat

spatulagrass

Yup, but good tapes are so hard to find.

bjwanlund

Yes. I have a collection of vinyl, CDs and cassette tapes and a lot of it is through iTunes/Apple Music and I have a robust library there too comprised of both physical and digital sources. I need to go through my tapes to make sure I am not overlapping on any other parts of my extensive music collection tho 🤣

ImNotTheBossOfYou

All 3?
