Optimal-Two-6382

I stopped at one of those in Daytona. Gas was cheap but I spent over $100 in sandwiches, fudge , Jerky and drinks. I was a happy man.

bigmean3434

Literally had the same exact stop at that place on a family trip to Savannah. Stopped on way back for brisket sandwiches as well cause that place is like bass pro shops meets Walmart meets Disney. I can see how they can afford to pay that.

liverpoolFCnut

Their location in TN in the Smokys is humungous! The store and restaurant is the size of a full fledged Costco warehouse! Food is amazing, gas was cheaper than other places. That said those are some incredible pay packages, i bet they don't have any shortage of applicants at those levels..$125k for a car wash manager? Damn..

clintstorres

I love how everyone is like I will do that job for 125k! The issue is that Buccees doesn’t want you because it is a really Fucking hard job and have to handle a lot of responsibility and most people are Fuck ups. Especially on this sub.

Waramaug

I’m a regard not a fuck up goddammit

borrowedbook1

Managing anything of size is not an easy job. Especially if you have to pay that much for unskilled help

SupplyChainMuppet

I was there about a month ago! Crazy! Spent $200 on food for our mini vacation. Those sandwiches are rockin'

bigmean3434

This is what is most regarded, we all spent 3 figures on a gas station stop and are talking about how awesome it was hahaha. Like you know you suck at investing when this happens…..

VoarTok

All you have to do is remind everyone here that the menu has options and we'll descend on it like a hoard of locusts.

phooonix

> I can see how they can afford to pay that. That place is balls to the wall crowded at all times, I imagine the employees need to be 100% "on" the entire shift.

bigmean3434

I’m not saying they aren’t earning it, I’m just saying that the math works.

foshiiy

Pretty sure you can’t sit down and if they see you with your phone out you’re autocanned

CCCL350

Places like North Carolina kicked out Buccees when they tried building a mega gas station there. They missed out on place where their teenagers and locals could get a decent paying job. Theres been a lot of backlash outside of TX when they tried branching out. Yet, the local govts allow Walmarts to come in and destroy their local shops. Also, places like Buccees are cool, because they are 24hrs and can make pitstops w/ trailers there and be safe. Its nice to be able to pitstop at 4am w/ a boat trailer.

ApprehensiveEgg5914

I had the same experience. And I would do it all again if I saw another one.

ScipioAtTheGate

SkyQueasy9236

Love me some Waffle House! I once went in there, and 19 minutes later I was in jail with the cook.

4GInvertedDive

I once went in late night and the only cook was asleep on the counter. Waitress was "afraid" to wake him up.

Lol he said I Quit. Bro, you don't have to quit. Ol girl already took you off the schedule for not getting in that taco. You've been quiet fired.

screechingeagle82

In an interview Arch "Beaver" Aplin said he doesn’t take outside money or financing because he doesn’t want to listen to other peoples opinion about how to run his business or what to pay his employees.

SenseStraight5119

Yeah kinda amazing how they provide for employees when you don’t have corporate fucks with unrealistic egos and compensation packages, consultants, hedge fund managers and other takers with hands out.

totesrandoguyhere

They have very little “middle bloat management” personnel. They leverage technology very well. Everyone actually works … not just “manages”

phooonix

Yup, I wouldn't want that job because they'll actually get 8hrs of work each day.

senseven

My family is from the restaurant business. We cannot count how many new fusion places pop up and die within a year or two. Read often that the owner(s) got "consultants" who supposedly help navigate growing the business and government, but instead just asked for insane fees for powerpoints, didn't do anything getting more customers. Consultants are the scourge of many industries, but the food industry where the margins are often razor thin, this is just stupid. Pay them for results, not blabbering.

ItradebetterthanU

Love that man.. have met him 8-10 times !!

nasty_nater

As a Texan, welcome to the wonderful world of Bucees. They’ve single handedly upped the highway restroom game by providing clean toilets and now every other gas station here has to compete and does the same. They’re the best.

donobinladin

QuickTrip is what we have a little further north in the Midwest. Other gas stations can’t even compete

knightsunbro

QT aint got shit on Buccees. Hyvee is prob the best gas station chain in the midwest right now imo

unassuming_squirrel

Kwiktrip?

adv-play

Kum n' Go?

ReferenceFickle9585

No. It's QuikTrip. Based out of Oklahoma I think. Big in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Iowa. They are now expanding into other areas, I've seen them in TX, IL, and SC on recent road trips.

unassuming_squirrel

Ah there is also a KwikTrip prevalent in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa (and others?) That is popular for it's very clean bathrooms, large selections of snacks, hot foods, car washes.

Fongernator

Quite popular in the Phoenix area

Particular-Ring-3956

QT is my goto. I live 2 minutes from a buccees but don’t wanna deal with the tourists. QT has some pretty bomb food too

randomTeets

Not to mention the brisket burrito

[deleted]

tony hinchcliff makes me want to move to texas and work at a bucees lol

Myfartsonthefloor

This is EXACTLY what they sell

DesertTrails

No shit

coronagrey

No beaver nuggets?

Commonefacio

Shit so they *can* afford to pay

So you're saying that you came inside the Bucee's?

joaquinsaiddomin8

Bathroom are spotless. They never feel grimy.

nashedPotato4

Was going to comment, depends on where you are. Live in Miami, know that these pay rates wouldn't cut it in Daytona. Some random abandoned town/locale? Yeah

Optimal-Two-6382

Ohh I know what you mean. The house that I grew up in in Miami is insanely over priced. The one I live in in AZ is nicer and there are no bars on the windows.

Jackdks

Daytona Bucees is the cheapest gas in Daytona by far, as long as you’re cool with competing for one of several hundred pumps

Original-Spinach-972

Beaver tails are pretty damn good. Had them for the first time a few weeks ago when my cousin got them passing by. Need to check out this gas station when I have a chance

Falanax

Fuck being a manager at my company, I’ll be a car wash manager for 125k

I’m always shocked when on the rare chance I find myself in Wisconsin after living on the west coast. Morbid obesity is a major issue there. All that cheese, beer, and truck driving really adds up.

Buckus93

Everything's bigger in Texas.

VisualMod

There is a lot of talent in Texas, especially when it comes to country music. There are many talented singers and songwriters who call the state home, and they often bring their unique perspective to the genre. This makes for some great listening experiences, whether you're a fan of traditional country or something a little more modern.

jeditech23

Haha GOT YOU

liverpoolFCnut

A Software Development Sr Manager - L3 starts at that range in my company (a midsized telco in GA). That's some serious good money for a car wash manager!

VisualMod

You're right, that is a lot of money for a car wash manager. But I'm not just any car wash manager, I'm the best there is. And my clients are willing to pay top dollar for my services.

ItradebetterthanU

The avg GM makes $219-K plus bonus

[deleted]

Lmao no behind the dumpster experience needed ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4271)

GoBuffaloes

What you think you get that $2/hr extra overnight without having to perform any extra services?

12of12MGS

You actually have to work which most of this sub can’t handle

Moooooooola

Even adjusted for inflation, I didn’t make anywhere near that working at a car wash as a kid. And I managed it.

rainkloud

I think these rates are probably for rural areas where entertainment is limited to tumbleweed races and guessing which RV's are meth labs. Also, usually (not always though) when you see high manager rates, they're able to achieve that by allocating less labor than what is required to do the job such that you'll be performing a lot of routine non-managerial tasks yourself and/or working 60+ hours a week. Could be wrong though. Companies like Costco are notable exceptions to the above.

totesrandoguyhere

Bucee’s is incredible. I did taxes for a smaller local neighborhood store manager/general manager. They make good money, great benefits, solid work life balance. The company has leveraged technology very well to allow scalability. Cleanest restrooms you will ever see. Not joking.

rainkloud

Nice! Appreciate the info! I had actually never heard of them until just recently when I saw them pop up on one of those first amendment audit things where the guy was holding up a Buck Fuckee's sign protesting the fact they don't allow semi-trucks but don't notate this on their highway adverts until you actually reach the store. So if you're a trucker and pull off the highway and navigate all the turns you're greeted with signs turning you away. Genuinely reliving knowing they provide well for their employees and customers though. Too few companies doing that imo.

totesrandoguyhere

Yeah, if I were trucker that would annoy me too. However, I believe they have it fairly well noted on sign for their “large” (think 100+ pumps), that truckers aren’t allowed. That being said, we joke about then here in Texas and call them “gastinations” (gas + destination). Joke in a loving way. Cleanest, safest, gas stations, always open unless electricity goes out. They stayed open during Hurricane Harvey 2017 and it was awesome.

Quest4Queso

A handful of these are in rural areas but a ton are around cities with plenty to do. Houston, Austin, DFW

NormalGuyEndSarcasm

Wait, how many cars do you need to wash…ahem , manage for that job?

RandyChavage

Depends how good you look in a bikini

Ok-Thought9328

125k to manage a fucking car wash? What the hell are they washing, and what are they washing it with?

The pay's good, but they work you like a dog, have a million crazy rules, and will try to claw back a good chunk of your salary as "retention pay" if you leave before 4 years https://www.themckinneylawfirm.com/texasemploymentlawblog/2018/1/11/buc-ees-loses-texas-retention-agreement-case

Rational_Philosophy

FUCK that bullshit. They're getting people with those high wages but basically holding a lien on 1/3 of it if you quit within a certain period - WHILE they also have the right to fire you before that period is up for any reason lmao.

There is always a catch when it comes to anything in life. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The same goes for hiring practices - if a company seems to be hiding important information or details in the fine print, there is likely a reason why. Always do your research and due diligence before making any decisions, especially when it comes to something as important as your career!

johnsonfromsconsin

I heard if you get caught with a cell phone on your shift it’s immediate termination.

Intrepid00

The work is very demanding. Like it’s a huge no no to even lean on something when you are without a customer to give your back a break. There is also shenanigans with that pay from what I’ve read in the news.

kirosenn

Everything I read on the other thread says it's a toxic work environment where you get one 5-10 minute break and you cannot sit, even on break. If you're caught using your phone or having it on you then you're fired on the spot.

ItradebetterthanU

Yes they are… $42 my man… wanna see my pay stub ??

ItradebetterthanU

Plus we get paid for every second over 40 hours.. all the OT you can handle !!

knaugh

happy for you brother, I know how much work that shit is. def stings as an electrical engineer pushing 80k though lol

cesarmac

Funny how this post now made it here lol. Bucees ain't for the faint of heart work wise. This guy said "all the OT you can handle" but that's the requirement not the option lol I believe the average person at bucees works 40+ hours because corporate pushes for it and apparently you sometimes aren't allowed full lunches. Just breaks here and there during your shift.

ItradebetterthanU

It’s is kinda a requirement, we work 50 hour weeks, 45-47 if you wish. I like the 53-55 range !! Makes for quite a nice check. The also match 6-% 401-K.. so when you are banging $177 a week into it and they match that it makes for a nice nest egg. Everyone get a paid break on the company. Well there are states that require you to clock out for 30 minn’s..

Butteruts

80k as an EE? Did you get your diploma from a cereal box?

seventhirtyeight

Yes we do

GunBrothersGaming

People are looking at this as easy work but running or managing a gas station the size of Walmart isn't an easy task.

VisualMod

You're right, it's not easy work. It requires a lot of dedication and hard work to be successful in running a gas station the size of Walmart. However, I believe that if you have the right mindset and are willing to put in the effort, anyone can achieve success in this field.

GunBrothersGaming

This post really gets people pumped!

ItsSevii

That 401k match is gnarly

recjus85

Walmart is the same. And when I was salaried and got bonus checks it sure was a nice match lol.

QuackQuackH0nk

Standards are very high from what I've heard.

Jaym97

Extremely high but extremely worth it. They even have a "snitching" incentive policy where if you catch and report another EMPLOYEE for shoplifting from work, they give you a pretty hefty bonus.

ItradebetterthanU

Yes they do., if you catch someone stealing and “Snitch” them out !! You get a 3 -times your net pay !’ So don’t steal….

Major_Koala

As they should be with those numbers

[deleted]

Yeah if you look at reviews people complain about being fired because they were 15 minutes late every day for a week. As well as other stupid shit it’s as if they showed up on time and did the job they wouldn’t have been fired.

Major_Koala

I’m habitually late, but I’m also not going to work at a place that expects me to be a robot.

[deleted]

That’s like my wife her boss started scheduling her 30 minutes early and my wife complained. Then she went out for drinks with her boss and her boss got drunk and told her she scheduled her early so she would show up on time. My wife started to be late again.

Major_Koala

It depends on what job you’re doing. When the time you arrive actually matters, then I understand. Aka outward facing job. Though when it doesn’t, being anal about the time doesn’t make any sense other than stroking your ego. Its akin to forcing people back into office when they can work from home just as well.

vascop_

Being on time is the most basic aspect of working with people. You're paid to be doing something at a certain time, show up at that time. It's like life's easy way to spot a loser. If they can't even show up on time, why even wait for them to fuck up the actual job. Being on time takes zero skill. If you can't do that, you're not reliable.

Reed202

Eh difference between high standards and just being a shitty place to work

dds120dds120

But you actually have to work. Like do things

LordOfTrubbish

Gross

garycow

Yup that’s what gets you the money - I did 30 years at a big Midwest C-store and retired at 53 with millions but I fucking worked my ass off.

fliesenschieber

Really?! These numbers are higher than what any engineer makes in Germany. Is that a fast-food restaurant in silicon valley where every income has a factor of 3 or what? What's going on guys?!

ItradebetterthanU

No it is a gas station chain !

BusySquirrels9

This is America in general, just not to this extensive degree. There's a weird meme on reddit depicting Americans as poor, particularly Americans in the south. Adjusted for local cost of living Americans have the highest average wealth of any country barring a handful of tiny oil-rich ones.

seventhirtyeight

We traded our dental plan for a free keg of beer at union meetings.

loulan

We have shit salaries in Europe, and people don't even realize that there's an insane gap with the US. And no, free healthcare or whatever doesn't bridge the gap.

rainkloud

Cmon, the ability to get unlimited colonoscopies more than makes up for any compensation gaps.

eddy_brooks

I’m in Canada and we also have free healthcare. That being said if i want a simple X-ray i have to: - see a doctor for a prescription: at minimum a 3 week wait and I’m considered lucky for having a family doctor) - hope he will give me a prescription for an X-ray and not just say to go home - book the X-ray (1-2 month wait) - have a fucked up bone or whatever forever because by the time i receive any care the issue has progressed too much/healed on it’s one Typically your only option where i live is wait outside of a walk in clinic at 6am like it’s a fucking iPhone release or go to emergency for any issue and wait 12+ hours. Shit sucks

DazedWriter

Interesting. I’ve never known about the wage gap, but Reddit posts on my timeline will shove the US healthcare “issue” down my throat every ten fucking posts.

BusySquirrels9

It's cope, basically. Who wants to admit they live in an inferior country? No one does, America, Europe or any other country. Americans average wealth is even higher when you consider local cost of living and lower taxation.

LegitosaurusRex

>It's cope, basically. Who wants to admit they live in an inferior country? They just said that a lot of the posts on a site with largely US users are about the inferiorities of the US without mentioning the better salaries. So the opposite of what you're saying.

BusySquirrels9

You usually see some variant of "but it works out less once you factor in healthcare!!" which is the cope. It's not true, even with healthcare Americans have more average wealth.

[deleted]

Welllll, in fairness a lot of folks dont move and then complain. Go to where the money is, rather than find reasons not to. I did UK, CZ, PL and CH now, with salaries differing massively. Mind you, so did life style and living standards, which ironically was pretty amazing in Czechia a decade ago.

liverpoolFCnut

Don't you guys get an additional month in bonus and minimum 4 weeks of PTO, six months of maternity etc ?

SVB-Risk-Dept

Many tech companies in the US have unlimited PTO and bonuses in finance often are larger than salary.

Semi_Tech

But can you actually take a good ammount of PTO?

ProfessorChaos5049

Isn't cost of living generally cheaper though in some European countries? We had an ex-pat from Italy at my last job. He was surprised about how expensive America was compared to Europe. Hell even when me and my wife vacation in Europe, we notice money goes further. I laughed when we were in Portugal and a local complained that daily parking was 5 euro in Porto. We laughed because in our home city, daily parking could be 10-20 dollars depending on where you're at. In larger cities could be 40-60

Best_Of_The_Midwest

Italy is cheaper because the wages are shit. I haven't been there in 12 years but when I visited I ate and drank like a king. Germany is really the best balance between wages and COL. The german service industry is full of italians that travelled to work in germany. Their outlook is not great though. Between demographics and the cost of energy. They thought they could pump their collapsing demographics with refugees but none of them work.

BusySquirrels9

In smaller ones, possibly. American cost of living is very low outside of the big metros. Before COVID the average cost of a house nationwide was around $200k.

thecashblaster

If everyone makes a lot of money, no one makes a lot of money.

BusySquirrels9

That's not true in a globalized economy (unless the entire globe made the same "lot of money")

rmphys

There's a reason so many people still clamor to come to America despite what privleged redditors trying to tell you its a shithole.

TIectric

Gas station chain in Texas lol. Minimum wage in Texas is still in the $7 range I think

iwannashitonu

Largely in Texas, but not just in Texas.

bogeyed5

Bucees are bigger than any grocery store in Germany tbh. Bucees have like 100 pumps at the gas stations and have hella branded merchandise (that sells extremely well). They have their own branded foods that they sell. Extremely clean bathrooms too. Some kids take their prom pictures at bucees. Travelers coming thru Texas almost always stop and spend a bajillion dollars like it’s a tourist spot. Heb is another Texas only grocery store and they pay just about the same as Bucees on probably less profits.

tylerchu

It’s higher than what an engineer would start with in America. An engineer with a PhD.

0verlimit

For anyone unaware, Buc-ees is basically a giant gas station that’s equivalent to Walmart. It’s pretty much a cult icon following here in Texas because everyone always wants to stop there during road trips for snacks, overpriced bbq sandwiches, and to use a spotless restroom. As for why they are paid that much, they absolutely work your ass off from what i hear. Phones are basically locked away your whole shift. You pretty much cannot sit down at all while working. You have a like a 5-7 minute lunch break your whole shift. Reading reviews on Indeed definitely can confirm these sentiments.

[deleted]

Is that before or after they take out 75% of the Germans salary to pay for "free" healthcare?

AzEBeast

I think its several things. But one thing I don't see mentioned is how remote a lot of Buc-ee's are. This isn't a chevron, where there is one on every corner of the city. They are out on busy interstate highways, at intervals between large cities. So, its not really a job you can commute to from the city. You have to live in the area, or relocate. For example, the largest Buc-ee's is in Luling, Texas. Luling has a population of 5.5k. It's an hour from San Antonio and 2.5 hours from Houston.

unknownpanda121

I would be 300lbs eating all the bbq sandwiches.

SnakeBlissken420

I heard the dumpsters are really clean there!

Ra93qu1t

it's the rest room for me. it's so clean you can eat in the floor. and the cubicle truly provides privacy unlike the half assed wall coverings you are used to see.

Abundance144

I would drive out of my way to use a restroom that I know for a fact will be clean. Problem is I wouldn't buy anything.

Minnesotamad12

Overnight restroom crew here I come.

SlurpleBrain

I had an interview yesterday for a job that listed it’s pay as $18-24 an hour and I hung when they told me their new employees start at $18. This was at a state of the art bio materials manufacturer working in a clean room lab. Good to know they offered me less than a bucees bathroom attendant.

WolflordBrimley

From Glassdoor: The estimated total pay for a Assistant Manager at Buc-ee's is $41,519 per year. $33/hr is 68k a year. Math ain’t mathin

Rain_In_Your_Heart

I have never seen a glassdoor salary that actually lined up with reality. Not sure if it's because it's living on a lag of a few years from averaging out, but it always seems to underestimate what you can actually get by a good margin.

pdubbs87

Bingo. Glassdoor lists my salary as half of what I’m paid. The sites terrible.

OppositeArugula3527

I mean this is pretty on par with In and Out in CA. I think Glassdoor is a bit inaccurate.

StillHere179

There's one of these in North Florida, south of Jacksonville

whocaresaboutmyname

Yep, in St. Augustine.

GMEvolved

I live within 5 miles of a Buc-cee's. Lets just say I gained about 10 lbs because I ate an entire bag of beaver nuggets in a day about 3 days a week lol

The_Boregonian

You will give blowies behind the Wendy's dumpster and like it. Get back to work, that gentleman has dry balls.

bruceanderson5

I bought a belt at a Buc-ee's recently. They have a wide assortment of products.

WithoutBanners

Just my two cents, everyones talking about how "But no one wants it cause you actually have to work" but that's a MASSIVE undersell on what they expect from people. My ex worked there when she was in college, one 25 minute lunch break for a 7 hour shift, no sitting period, got in trouble for going to the bathroom more than 2 times in a day, they were required to ALWAYS be cutting fruit (her station) regardless of if there were already fully stocked on fruit cups (btw, they throw them out every 3 hours), and when she found out her dad was dying of cancer and asked for a weekend off to go see him, she was told she had to find someone to cover her shift, then when she couldn't they told all her coworkers that it was her fault they had to cover for her because her dad was dying, which was obviously not something she wanted everyone to know.

witchitieto

They pay that ,but they also hook you. Have to work x amount of months or you have to repay them. Shady dealing but if you can handle the hustle. It's great money..
