The photo is on the Wikipedia page for “chain gang”, supposedly from a 1909 postcard, but I couldn’t find any more info on where it was taken.

Lievargus

I don't recognize the statue bases

vesuvisian

The media page only says that the postcard was postmarked in DC, so possibly it could have been from somewhere else. It looks like the editor pulled it from eBay, but his link doesn’t lead anywhere useful.

Great find! This suggests that it was Pennsylvania Ave in front of the White House, though I still can’t quite place it. This must not have been exactly on Inauguration Day, though, as 10” of snow fell the night beforehand. https://americanhistory.si.edu/zh-hans/collections/ac-component/sova-nmah-ac-0143-ref6273

Slavery never ended. It just put on a different suit.

NotABurner6942069

The constitution agrees with you.

SandBoxJohn

This might com as a surprise to you. Convict labor is still used to this day to to clean up litter along roads in various states. All of of the convicts that do this labor are compensated and given other privileges. They provide that labor because the correctional facilities trust them.

turnageb1138

It doesn't surprise me, I know that convict labor is still used to this day. Sure, they're "compensated" alright - in the federal prison system, for example, they can earn up to a whopping 40 cents per hour.

LightlyRoastedCoffee

They're free to choose whether they work or not though, right?

Gumburcules

I like to explore new places.

LightlyRoastedCoffee

Lol what are they gonna do if they refuse to work? Throw them in jail?

Gumburcules

I find joy in reading a good book.

LightlyRoastedCoffee

Yeah, tbh I don't really care about the rights and freedoms of people who actively seek to harm our communities and who have been proven guilty of harming said communities. Obviously there's problems with false convictions and over prescribing prison sentences for minor crimes, but why tf should I care if a convicted murderer is being made to clean up trash on the side of the road for pennies. If you commit a heinous crime against society, then you owe a debt to society, this is how you repay that debt 🤷‍♂️

PalpitationNo3106

Chain gang life.

DrBigWildsGhost

Happening in Libya as we speak !

MysteriousestLion

"You have to do things you don't want to do and you can't leave" is a pretty good description of prison.  It’s wild that Amercapitalism is still relying on prisons, unlike all the other countries literally smdh hate that for us. /s

Georgiaonmymind2017

The one on the left looks white

turnageb1138

I didn't mention their race though.

Formergr

Do we know what street this was taken on?

Collapsosaur

I wonder when they invented the broom head with an angle. Those look like giant paint brushes.

theevilempire

Don’t give Sam Alito any ideas

invalidmail2000

Should honestly bring this back for criminals

BreastMilkMozzarella

This still exists.

invalidmail2000

Not here unfortunately :(

dirty1809

Prisoners still do labor, just not this. A bunch of furniture in state buildings is built by prisoners

DrBigWildsGhost

No way that Ball is that heavy

zuckerkorn96

Yeah but it’s awkward as hell to run with a weighted ball shackled to your ankle. Especially because the chain was normally too short to be able to pick up the ball in your hands. That combined with your ankles being chained just close enough together so that you can’t get into a sprint makes getting away basically impossible.

DrBigWildsGhost

That’s why u carry it & sprint like ur sprinting with a medicine ball but it’s probly easier to get sniped while carrying a 35 lbs ball

Daedelus451

I think what this should say is slaves still work in DC in 1909 and sweep the streets.

SufficientSwim754

Isn’t that guy on the left white?

BreastMilkMozzarella

They are convicts. They could be there for rape or assault, for all we know.

Basicbroad

In an era where black people were put in prison for loitering so that they could be forced into convict leasing then it makes no sense to degenerate them as convicts.
