-Octoling8-

Well, the bishop went on a much needed vacation... I don't think he's coming back

Hookens

Have you seen the weather? I think a pawn storm is coming

-Octoling8-

Have you heard? The french are making a queen sacrifice

haggis69420

the rook is sat in the corner, potentially plotting world domination.

RandomBilly91

There's a bishop in the corner, he's plotting for world domination

SlavicGerman_Comrade

I think it's impossible, the bishop went on vacation and he is never coming back... maybe the rook?

Str3eters

holy shit

Meandark2

a new response just dropped!

decoy777

EquinoxGm

Or castling

WarokOfDraenor

the two pawns move at the beginning?

henrydaiv

Damn. Im not gonna say ive played a ton of chess but ive played enough to really regret not knowing that rule.

JoJet223

To 'compensate' for how simple and 'feeble' Pawns function, they have the ability to transform into any piece that has been lost once they fully make it across the board safely.

Whizblade

A piece doesn't have to be lost so that a pawn can promote to it, you can always promote them to either a queen, rook, bishop or a knight. Pawns also must promote to a piece when reaching the last rank.

[deleted]

Practically though, you may have to force that rule when playing with someone else

Sacramor

If you let them get 8 pawns across the board you probably weren't gonna win anyway

oFFtheWall0518

If I remember correctly, you can have up to five of any piece on the board, so up to four additional queens, for example.

Difficult-Let-1314

There is no limit, you can have 9 queens on the board.

mazetas4

There is no such rule in chess.

Maeurer

> ransform into any piece that has been lost once no you can PROMOTE them into any piece except King and Pawn.

lt_Matthew

And if you want to be snooty, they can't be promoted to the other player's pieces. Which makes some checkmates a lot harder than they need to be

mazetas4

What do you mean about making checkmates harder?

JenJenneration

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly you could theoretically box an opponent's king in by having your piece change sides - the king would be able to displace an opponent piece and go to where it was, but you can't take pieces on your own side, so the king wouldn't be able to move there.

mazetas4

Yeah but if the piece is on the king's own side then it can't checkmate him either

edwinhai

but it can stop the king from escaping.

mazetas4

From what though, no one attacks the king if you promote to his own piece

edwinhai

But you could attack with other units. Lets say the King is in the corner, getting attacked by a rook next to the edge. A Knight puts pressure on the diagonal escape route. So the king could only go to the side, which could be blocked by a "pawn promoted to his own side". |Rook|||Knight| |:-|:-|:-|:-| ||||| |King|own pawn||| If the own pawn was a Queen, the king could attack her, but he can't attack his own pawn so hes checkmate.

mazetas4

You can't both promote and move your rook to attack the king in the same move. So if you promote first then it's the other guy's turn, and he can move the promoted piece to open the way for his king.

SignalFall6033

That’s not how it works. Having lost a piece has absolutely nothing to do with promotion. You’re just as silly as OP how does this have 250 upvotes??

aquamanleftmetodrown

I grew up playing chess with this rule. I assumed it was universal. Guess not.

AlunePyLy

Cause it is. A pawn that reaches the opposite side of the chess, can be turned into any piece you wish. Chess rules are universal because it's an international game 😭

LevriatSoulEdge

I bet that in mars there a different ruling for this...

JamesMcEdwards

I remember reading games played by Bobby Fischer and Gary Kasparov where they both had multiple queens in play at the same time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotion_(chess)

DVAUgood_Reactionbad

There are some house rules, but they are not really widespread.

m8_is_me

Lmao Chess is the most universal game out there. Pawn gets to the back-rank, upgrade to whatever piece you choose (though anything aside from a queen is less good except for extreme circumstances)

Gruphius

As someone with a lot of playtime in chess always picking the queen is not the best strategy. Sure, 1 or 2 queens are fine, but more than that and you'll very quickly lose sight of which queen is on which row and accidentally draw. Having a few other pieces in play is the better choice then.

Zymoria

If you get to the point where you have 2 queens and can keep promoting, you're just wasting time.

ThoughtCow

Without promotion, there would be no endgame

[deleted]

I'm an avid chess player but literally no one ik plays it so idk why y'all are assuming this is common knowledge

AsryalDreemurr

no no it is

TheTwelfthLaden

It is. OP just doesn't know chess.

b_nnah

Google en passant

ThatDudeFromPoland

Suspicious-Natural-2

My mum knew this move (she doesn't play chess)

Der-Candidat

I don’t play chess and I at least know that

NotADrugD34ler

[This is the wiki page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Promotion_(chess)), but essentially yes. See also [il vaticano](https://chess-fanon.fandom.com/wiki/Il_Vaticano) and [en passant](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant)

the_3-14_is_a_lie

> If these conditions are met, the bishops can swap positions. This eliminates the pawns involved and plays a badass animation with fireworks and explosions. imma try this rn Also the best way to counter this is tech throw and Aegis setup

Delicious-Sentence38

Il vaticano is a meme move

NotADrugD34ler

So is en passant, google it

SomeBrowser227

Im gonna /unanarchy, en passant is a real move, il vaticano is not a real move

NotADrugD34ler

Tell that to the current top rated players in the world. That’s right, you can’t! Because you don’t have their contact information!

commentator-upvoter

What?

SomeBrowser227

google shitposting

mareno999

no, its not. Its more real than that ann passant bs.

for_sure_not_a_lama

Since when is chess in the game? And how do i play it?

Merto_

There are mini games all throughout the map of WD1, like chess/ a drinking game/ guess where the ball is etc.

Merto_

It is not a proper chess game though, they are more like chess puzzles

Lord_Antheron

There is a proper chess game available at the park near the Merlaut.

umotex12

After failing drinking game you can wake up in a trash behind the bar lmao

SlavicGerman_Comrade

Google promotion

yaBoi_smol

holy queen!

DankItchins

New piece just dropped.

anNPC

There's no way you play chess and don't know this rule. It's like a majority of my Strat let game.

GamingCandy

I thought that was a checkers rule not a chess rule. Damn.

DenzellDavid

It's both

DarthSevrus

...yes

Caldaris__

Oh man that sucks I would have been livid. 😤 It's just like in real life a peasant like me can one day be the queen 👑 of England.

imposterfish

When a pawn makes it to the other side of the board, you can swap it for any piece that you’ve lost

gellshayngel

No you can swap it for any piece of your own colour except for another pawn or king. A passed pawn can still be promoted if you haven't lost any pieces and/or you can swap it for a piece you haven't lost yet in which case can have more than the usual amount of pieces allowed at the start at the game, like 2 queens for example.

KorruptedPineapple

You got checkmated bruh. You lost fair and square

nonbog

Wait, what Watch Dogs game is this??? Chess in watch dogs??

SeraphOfFire

First game.

throwaway1626363h

I thought everyone knew this Wait till' you find out about castling and en Passant

SeraphOfFire

Google en passant

DVAUgood_Reactionbad

Looking at the board, it seems like both sides have castled. Making it even more confusing how OP doesn't know that rule.

pancakeface710

Google en passant

Xander_PrimeXXI

Yes

GrimmEidolon

Yea they updated Chess like 3 years ago? :D

nkent98

First time I learned en passant I realized I knew nothing and chess is black magic sorcery.

TheyLoveAstro

It’s called a pawn promotion, a pawn reaching the other end of the board then gets turned into a piece of choice (Queen, Rook, Bishop, and Knight)

Ckinggaming5

google en promote getting pawns to the other side of the board means you can turn them into anything besides a king

Scyobi_Empire

no, it’s a cheat. you’re meant to yell ‘en passant’ whenever you catch a cheater and then you get to delete an enemy pawn

Excitingly_Stupid

A pawn could always turn into a Queen.. I don’t even play chess and I know that.

Riddler202

AHAHHAHAHA

Taramund

What did you think would happen to a pawn at the end of the board? It'd just get stuck?

AsryalDreemurr

yes???? have you never played chess

Urys2009

Don’t you know that when the pawn reaches the last line it becomes a queen?

ProtoReaper23113

Technically it can become any peice but a queen is the most valuable

dharc__

Ches 2, it's the update

Brilliant_Rub_9217

You’ve never played chess huh?

TReid1996

Once a pawn reaches the far side of the board, it can become any other pieces outside of a king. Most people just go with queen since it has the most movements.

TrainerRedWins

Are u a full retard?

CohnJena68

Yes. If a pawn reaches the other side of the board, then you can transform it into any piece you desire aside from the King since you only have one King and there can only be one King on the board.

BrakoSmacko

I never knew that about chess. I've seen it in variations of checkers though but that turns into a king.

Blade__007

i will share this on discord

Blade__007

Npc=cheater 😂🤪

Suspicious-Natural-2

how old are you? jesus

Blade__007

u are people with such low IQ that you can't understand the joke (It's sad that there are users like this on Reddit)

Similar_Resist_4326

u are people with such low humor that normal people can't understand that this was supposed to be an attempt at making a joke (It's sad that there are users like this on Reddit)

typkrft

Yes it is a rule you don’t know about.
