1. Time changes do happen once in a while. About 5-6 weeks before a flight, schedules are sometimes fine tuned. There should be no more changes. 2. Follow the airlines advice for how early. I am not sure how busy Rome airport is for international departures. 2.5 hours before departure time should be fine and give lots of time. 3. Calgary is WestJet’s main hub airport and many connections are made there. Calgary airport does a very good job with international to domestic connections. You will land, then head to Canadian Customs (passport control). There will be big purple coloured signs saying ‘connections’ follow those. There will be 4 rows of electronic machines where you scan your passport and answer some questions. Then you give the receipt from the machine to the border guard. Next up is a connections desk ***you need to show the boarding pass from your Rome - Calgary flight AND the next boarding pass to Vancouver*** If you used paper boarding pass to get on your flight in Rome, keep it in your pocket - don’t throw it out. Your checked bag will automatically be transferred to your Vancouver flight you do not need to get it in Calgary. Then you walk in to Canada! and the domestic part of Calgary airport. No airport security check/scan. 4. If you miss your flight there are like 20 flights to Vancouver per day. They will just rebook you. You have a long layover so it should be no problem at all.

This is an excellent summary.

For bags: I have found they are not too strict on dimensions. Checked bag under plane is checked for weight on the scale and you willl be charged if it is over. If your fare class (econo flex) includes a checked bag for free, you will just select ‘1 checked bag’ when you check in online for your flight 24 hours before. WestJet sends lots of generic ‘offer’ emails that may not apply to your fare class

Normal. Rome is likely to be a busy airport. Recommended time would be 3 hours before if you are unfamiliar with the airport and/or flying. You will have to pass through customs in Italy before you depart (usually quick), and queue up for your tax refund, if applicable. In reality, probably 2-2.5 hours is adequate, but I'll leave that up to you. Bags should be checked to Vancouver. Double check at bag drop/check in counter. They will re-accommodate you with a new flight, if necessary.

When you land in Calgary, follow the purple ‘connections’ signs. Keep your inbound (Rome to Calgary) boarding pass and have your next (Calgary to Vancouver) boarding pass handy. There are lovely Calgary airport agents that will help direct you. Once you clear Canada Customs, follow the signs to your gate. You may want to check the flight information board to be sure of your gate (gates change all the time). Be at your gate 45 min prior to departure in Calgary.

If your flight from Rome-Calgary is delayed, you’ll be put on the next flight for Calgary-Vancouver - luckily WestJet operates a lot of flights per day YYC-YVR, so if you do have to catch the next flight, it won’t be that long of a wait :)

Carry on, stick to the size. Checked is just anything too big to be carey on, doesn't matter the size just has to be under 50 lbs. When you check in online (avaliable 24 hours ahead of time) you can choose your checked bags then and pay for them. If you miss your connection, they'll put you on the next available flight. Your luggage will be tagged all the way to Vancouver, no need to pick it up in Calgary. You can ask or just check the bag tag what the airport code is, YVR for Vancouver, YYC is Calgary. Since Calgary is your first Canadian stop you'll go through customs here and then your flight to Vancouver is a domestic one.

The size of checked bags definitely matters, otherwise one may have to pay an oversize fee.

TheSkyIsAMasterpiece

Typical suitcases in the 22" to 32" (whatever the extra large size is) range are all fine.

dachshundie

Again, incorrect. Majority of suitcases that are greater than 30-31” in its largest dimension will exceed the allowance, once you account for the other dimensions. 62 linear inches is the cutoff, including wheels. You’re free to go look up this up, if you’d like, with many suitcases of that size class.

Degus222

Basically if it's a normal suitcase even a large one you won't have issues. Technically you could being a bag 2 cm wide 2 cm tall and 151cm long as long as it was under weight.most suitcase will run into weight issues before size issues. If you are brining a box tho messure it and make sure all 3 sides add up to less than 157cm. They probably won't noticed if your size is slightly off but they will weigh for the 23kgs.

Degus222

I am helping my parents downsize so I often fly with 3 large suitcase (I get 3 free bags) to bring childhood stuff home. Hone and have never had an issue. I do messure boxed to make sure they are proper size tho because I don't wanna be stuck with an over size bag. There is a max 203cm that in theory they cut off at tho.
