If you’re flying within North America, just buy 2 one ways. It won’t have a price difference.

dachshundie

What is the route, and what would the cost be to separate out the itinerary? Likely, there is an ULCC that is competing on that route, which is why the huge difference between fare classes. Yes, it's normal. Many airlines do not allow you to combine the most restrictive-type fares. Likely, the return flight has either not allocated any fares to be deeply discounted (i.e. peak period travel/flight) as of yet, or is all sold out.

aboveavmomma

Excellent! This is exactly the kind of work around I was looking for. Thank you! It’s Calgary to Rome

dachshundie

Hmm, so no ULCC on the route. Guess it's just a promotional thing. You can try it, but sometimes splitting into two one-ways for international flights won't work due to the way these fares are priced. You can certainly try, though. FYI - you will forfeit some options in the event of a schedule change by doing this.

aboveavmomma

They are both direct flights a week apart so there shouldn’t be much danger of not being covered if something does happen? The return flight would be covered since there is no ultrabasic fare anyway. Or am I missing something?

Ashamed-Grape7792

I think you're right. Rome is a daily service in the summer so it should be fine no?

dachshundie

Sure - just depends on how strict your schedule is.

kailalou

CAN you book the flights as 2 separate flights or book Air Canada or other airline for the return.

BandicootFamous6427

Two one ways would be better if your booking UB it should allow you to book it that way

jen437

Instead of booking a return flight, book one way. Then you can book economy for just one way if you can afford it.

Can you use Ultra Basic and still get the free checked bag from having a WestJet World Elite MasterCard?

SaltAd5524

Yes

Rough-Carrot2273

Lol, are they even operating these days. Seems like though WestJet may care, their mechanics do not. If the mechanics don’t care can you even feel safe flying?

Please see Rule #3. Criticism that spurs discussion, shares personal experiences to further discussion, and/or is constructive is allowed, but aimless complaining is not. If you require assistance, please re-post with a specific question that others can assist you with. Otherwise, you may also re-post if you can adhere to the above.

Something to consider if you book two one ways: If booking a round trip on one itinerary, if something happens like a delay or cancelation on the outbound flight the airline has to rebook you but with international flights there is sometimes only one a day so you would be booked the next day, losing a full day of your trip. Westjet will honor the length of your trip and rebook the return free of charge, but only if it is on the same itinerary. If they are on separate itineraries, they are considered separate and westjet is not obligated to and will not rebook the return. If this doesn't matter for your trip then just disregard. Just thought I'd mention it.

Great feedback

Thank you this explanation! I’ve read a person should take 4-5 days in Rome to see and do most of the touristy things and I was planning on 7 days and just taking it easy doing things. Hopefully that would be enough of a buffer if my departure from Calgary had any issues. But also, I was willing to take this flight completely ultrabasic. I came prepared to gamble. Lol. I just went and read my credit card travel insurance and cancellations and delays are also covered through them. So it’s possible it wouldn’t even be that bad of a financial hit should something happen?

sarahsoaring

I have no idea how travel insurance works. You're on your own for that one :/
