There's plenty of evidence that these don't work at all as animal repellents, because I can see a cat sitting in front of my neighbors one right now and I can hear it because it never stops going off and it drives me insane, cat clearly doesn't give a damn though. I asked them to get rid of them or at least not point them right at my fucking house, so they went out and got two more.
They don't. Neighbor had one, and I watched a cat take a shit right in front of it. Luckily, I can't hear it. The older you are, the less you can hear them. My son and husband can hear it though.

We put a device similar to one of these there, and when it senses motion, it makes a loud noise, and flashes a light. That's enough to startle the cats, and they no longer hang out and chew on the screen.
I have zero confidence it is the 'ultrasonics' -- especially since humans can hear it, and believe it's mostly because of the light/change in environment -- but it seems to work.
As a bonus, it's solar powered, so it was set-it-and-forget it.

While they kept dogs and people away (very annoying to anyone with good hearing, it seems. My hearing is shot, though, so I couldn't hear shit) they did nothing to armadillos. Either armadillos just can't hear the frequency or they don't care.
So after speaking with animal control about the armadillo problem ( digging up everything and destroying our gardens), I just began shooting them.
It funny because in my area they are banned from use because they are more of a nuisance than a deterrent.

Had someone in town with one of those that went off anytime someone walked by. A handful of us reached out to our town council, because it was deafening if you were walking by as a human, it would cause my dog to cower (so we started to avoid it), and to boot...we live next to a school with high foot traffic of kids. Council must've told them it violates some sort of ordinance, noticed it's been taken down and they just reinforced their metal fence (that was already there) and doubled down on "no trespassing" signs...which you'd have to jump their fence to do.
It's annoying too. I used to deliver packages and you'd know someone had this. I'm not sure it would work on a starving or aggressive animal.
It's liable to just annoy anyone you be to come by your house. Seems like a shitty gadget designed to separate gullible people from their money.

My last place I had what I thought was a stray cat that kept deficating in my front garden. I shoo d it away one day and watched it run across the street, 1 house down. That neighbour let the cat in. I knocked on their door having just watched it deficate in my garden, then come home. They said it's nature man, it's just doing it's thing where it pleases. I said you're sure this is your stance? Just asking for you to be a responsible pet owner. They stayed to the same response. I accepted their response.
I have a large dog. So every bathroom break I brought him to their lawn. And left his giant pile there for them. One they even were out on their lawn cleaning the last one, while he came by to serve another. They asked me why I was doing this. I said we can both be kind, or let nature do it's thing man.
They then had their cat on a leash to go into their front yard tied off to their porch. And I bagged my dogs turds as any responsible pet owner would during a walk. We never talked again. Win, win.

It's for wildlife that comes into people's yard. The mentality is that the sound will scare off the animals and while yes it works for a bit, most times the local rabbits go deaf to it and ignore it entirely which makes the homeowner place more thinking more is better when it's not.

Hey! Do they work? I too have crazy cat neighbors and my dog gets super sick when she eats cat poo. Does the sound bother your dogs when they are inside?
I try to face them away from the actual yard and put them in places that I know they use for paths of travel. If I can scare them out before they even get into my yard that is the best case scenerio. They sometimes work but sometimes they don’t. All depends on if the animal is in the range to trigger the alarm / sound. I also buy coyote / fox urine and shake the pellets around the perimeter of my property to try to deter them.
They don't do shit, all of the old cretins in my region have them and the cats just chill on/around them all day, all they do is give me a fucking headache and I can hear them if I have my window open because they activate every time the wind blows and the grass moves, if you have these you suck. I often wonder what effect they also have on other wildlife such as birds, us humans really think we own everything. Natures gonna nature, just clean up or hose that shit once in a while or teach your dog not to eat it.

Yeah, these create a really friendly neighborhood atmosphere. You can't even have a peaceful walk in your own neighborhood anymore without people piercing your brain with these things. You typically don't have to be on the lawn for these to go off. Just being in the sidewalk is enough.

Deer repeller. Does anyone remember those little doodads you mounted on either side of your car's grille in the early 90s? The thing I remember most is living in an area with a lot of bat's, and when I was driving at twilight, I could see them randomly start flailing out of control when they were near the car. It seemed like they did not work nearly as well on actual deer though.
Every time I see such a thing, I'm tempted to cut the wire to the piezoelectric element in the dead of night. It's not like they are gonna notice the sound is gone because if they could hear it, they would not place such a horrendous device pestering my ears every time it thinks it sees movement.
Does it keep the cats away? I live in apartments where some stranger feeds all of the stray cats, inadvertently feeding skunks and possums too, even though the complex has sent emails not to. So if it truly works I may get some to run the cats off.
I have one by my chicken coop to ķeep raccoons away.

Not all of us. I'm almost 50 and can still hear those frequencies that allegedly only my kids should be able to hear. Sometimes those things resonate at a frequency that interacts with my tinnitus such that I want to drive an awl into my ears to make it stop.
We had a cheap one and I hated it, it kinda worked sometimes but just barely. It honestly had more of an effect on me and my mom would put it close to me. I did tell her it bothered be. Anyway we moved to a place with a smaller porch and she puts it right behind my head and I told her that its going in the lane way if it goes off. These things can cause extreme misery for pets. My neighbor had one that would go off for hours once tripped. My dogs would go nuts and were clearing in a lot of pain.
We had a couple of those; they’re motion activated and emit a high frequency sound that scares deer away—briefly. Then they get used to it and just find it annoying, like humans (my wife and I could both hear it somewhat when it was activated).
My wife swears to me the neighbor doesn’t have one because she can’t hear it when we walk past on our evening walks. On the other hand my dog and I want to walk faster. Maybe years of combat really did fubar my hearing
In Hawaii, owners put out glass jars of water on the lawn for the same purpose. Doesn’t take any energy and makes no noise but apparently keeps dogs and cats off the lawn.
They put some of these on buildings to deter humans from loitering as well. They have ones that are made to deter humans and make a high pitch frequency that people over a certain age can't hear as well. I read about them on the newspaper

Since I installed it I have alot less activity in my garden beds so I feel it sort of works.

Yeah, these create a really friendly neighborhood atmosphere. You can't even have a peaceful walk in your own neighborhood anymore without people piercing your brain with these things. You typically don't have to be on the lawn for these to go off. Just being in the sidewalk is enough.

The thing I remember most is living in an area with a lot of bat's, and when I was driving at twilight, I could see them randomly start flailing out of control when they were near the car. It seemed like they did not work nearly as well on actual deer though.

Every time I see such a thing, I'm tempted to cut the wire to the piezoelectric element in the dead of night. It's not like they are gonna notice the sound is gone because if they could hear it, they would not place such a horrendous device pestering my ears every time it thinks it sees movement.

Does it keep the cats away? I live in apartments where some stranger feeds all of the stray cats, inadvertently feeding skunks and possums too, even though the complex has sent emails not to. So if it truly works I may get some to run the cats off.

I have one by my chicken coop to ķeep raccoons away. I can't hear it at all, nor can my wife but my kids hear it IN THE HOUSE when it goes off. They kept shutting it off so I gave up on it. That guy just wants dogs/pets not on his lawn

Not all of us. I'm almost 50 and can still hear those frequencies that allegedly only my kids should be able to hear. Sometimes those things resonate at a frequency that interacts with my tinnitus such that I want to drive an awl into my ears to make it stop.
We had a cheap one and I hated it, it kinda worked sometimes but just barely. It honestly had more of an effect on me and my mom would put it close to me. I did tell her it bothered be. Anyway we moved to a place with a smaller porch and she puts it right behind my head and I told her that its going in the lane way if it goes off. Dogs bark, doesn't effect them but me so I grab it and whip it down some stairs onto the pavement

My neighbor has three these! Luckily over the years they have started to fail. Never kept any animal away. Instead it made all the neighbors try to figure out what the annoying noise was:

We had a couple of those; they’re motion activated and emit a high frequency sound that scares deer away—briefly. Then they get used to it and just find it annoying, like humans (my wife and I could both hear it somewhat when it was activated).

My wife swears to me the neighbor doesn’t have one because she can’t hear it when we walk past on our evening walks. On the other hand my dog and I want to walk faster. Maybe years of combat really did fubar my hearing

In Hawaii, owners put out glass jars of water on the lawn for the same purpose. Doesn’t take any energy and makes no noise but apparently keeps dogs and cats off the lawn.
They put some of these on buildings to deter humans from loitering as well. They have ones that are made to deter humans and make a high pitch frequency that people over a certain age can't hear as well. I have neighbors with one of those, I fucking hate walking by the stupid things. Funny thing is, my dog literally only feels comfortable pooping in our own backyard… He refuses to do it on walks.
