We used to have one that looked like this in front of our house and it was SOOOOO pretty, the bees loved them too. We had to take it out for renovations though
This camera angle makes me feel like I'm in one of those dreams where I struggle to lift my head and look up.
edit: In the spirit of contributing positively, the Spirea on the right is a great coverage plant to hide foundations, etc. Beware that they can get absolutely massive and this one could easily overtake the Azalea next to it within a year or two. If you want to keep it that small you'll need to prune it aggressively, but don't worry, they can take it.
One odd thing is that the ones in my front yard have a more autumnal look in the Spring, and a more spring-ish look in the Fall. Not sure if that is supposed to happen but it's neat.
The Azaleas in my front yard are pathetic, but I don't have the heart to yank them.
Close one. Left is barberry. Middle azalea and right gold mound spirea. Not sure where you are but Indiana recently classified barberry as invasive so can’t sell them or buy them anymore. Shame because while they do suck to get leaves out of and pick up trimmings they shape well and have lots of different colors.
Man this is tough. I HATE honeysuckle. I actually just cut and burned it today. Stuff sucks. Ive never had a problem with my barberrys… idk if I’d put them in the same category as honeysuckle and Bradford pairs though….. is there a difference in variety and breed of wild barberry and nursery or all the same?
Think the dark shrub on far left is a ninebark, physocarpus. Maybe a diablo, or summer wine variety. The spirea would look much nicer if allowed to grow. Might be magic carpet or gold mound...nice, easy maintenance kinda shrub.
Can you take some pics of the foliage of middle shrub? I thought it was a weigela at first.
It’s a neighbors yard unfortunately not, but thank you for the awesome plant ideas! I had a lot of open space when I bought this house a year ago and have been slowly filling it up because I like foliage and flowers more than usable grass space lol
I enjoy checking the top comments here to see if I got it right. I amaze myself sometimes. I got azalea, appreciate reading about the others that I didn't recognize.
Hard to day without an up close of the flowers, either an azalea as others have said or maybe a japanese quince! If you look up the flowers of both its easy to tell the difference.
Azalea. More blooms than I usually see. If you decide to plant some be aware most don't flower that fully and they only hold their blooms for about a week. Then it's just a green shrub till the next year.
I’m the worst person to ask tbh lol. I put some all purpose fertilizer just before spring but idk if that’s the correct time to do it or not I just kinda did it just because. I never trimmed it or anything
If you trim the new growth just after blooms are done it will flower next year.
If you trim the bush late summer / fall you cut off the blooms for next year.
I have this one in my backyard, I think it’s also an azalea? I didn’t trim it last year but I will this year!

I wish people would not shape azaleas. They look so much better in a natural form. They;re not meant to be squares, rectangles or balls. I understand people like that formal look, but it looks so unnatural to me.
I just confirmed this is an azalea in my backyard! I was obsessed with how pretty it is last year and it’s even more so this year, I didn’t trim it or anything so it’s just doing it’s thang

I have one like that too that is just covered with blooms. But it won’t grow tall. It was supposed to be up to 4’ tall but stays close to the ground at about 9”. Any ideas to make it grow tall?
Red is azalea in bloom. Never seen one that covered. Nice!
I think its a “knock out” variety 😊. At least that’s what I call them.
“Encore”, knockout is for roses.
correct
Yes! Encore! I got them mixed up
L to R- Barberry, Azalea, Spirea

Azalea. Got one that needs to be snipped all over. Gorgeous flowers.
I think 1st is sand cherry, azalea and spirea

Bradford pears are pretty too, but they should still be destroyed with all possible dispatch.
Prune Bradford pears with a chainsaw. At ground level.
I think you've got to get the whole stump out. They multiply by the roots, like bush honeysuckle.
Drill several holes in the stump. Pack saltpeter into the holes. Pour water slowly over the saltpeter. Repeat as necessary.

yeah, but they do also spread aggressively and outcompete other understory plants and make good homes for ticks.
First one is a Barberry
The left one looks like a Loropetalum to me. Just not in bloom.

And I think the big one might be a barberry actually...I zoomed in lil more. You notice thorns?
That lovely is a red azalea. Had a few of these bushes in our front yard as a kid. This is a beautiful color !

No problem...love helping people. What zone you in?
7a, just outside NYC in northern NJ 😎
Oh nice, I'm upstate NY 5b. Feel free if you have any questions.. I've been gardening for a bit.
That is one seriously happy azalea!!!
Hard to day without an up close of the flowers, either an azalea as others have said or maybe a japanese quince! If you look up the flowers of both its easy to tell the difference.

How does one get that many blooms??!! Mind blown!
This is the one in my backyard :) https://ibb.co/QFzDBRG https://ibb.co/0Jq2YgQ
Beautiful! Any advice on increasing the amount of blooms?
I’m the worst person to ask tbh lol. I put some all purpose fertilizer just before spring but idk if that’s the correct time to do it or not I just kinda did it just because. I never trimmed it or anything
Thank you :)
On the left is Japanese barberry I believe. I don’t know what’s on the right. Like others said, the middle plant is azalea.
They are pretty close together . . .
Hino azalea
First one is a Barberry
It sure but they are awesome!

Definitely azalea. Trim right after blooms fall off. New growth this summer will bloom next year.

If it has barbs, the one on the left could be a barberry.
