That sure does look like some sort of squash. Was compost spread in that area? Squash seeds often survive home composting. They can also get spread around by animals if squash scraps are thrown in the trash and animals can get to it. Squashes are not uncommon volunteers as they produce a lot of durable seeds which have ways of getting around.
I got squash plants in my compost bin but none was spread here. It may have been one of my dogs, I have one who eats anything that falls on the ground, including squash.
I had whole pumpkin seeds that fell out of my compost from a little accident. I decided not to pick them up until spring and obviously didn’t get them all because I have found some pumpkin growing in my pots lol

Squashes have both flowers on the same plant. Male flowers have long skinny stems and grow first and only last a day or so. Female flowers have short fat stems that will become the fruit. The bees gotta get bizzay with em, but if the don't, you can do it yourself. Also male flowers are edible, stuff them and deep fry them. I imagine female flowers are edible too, but I'm more interested in whatever they're gonna make.
because it is squash...they volunteer easily
But I didn't PLANT it!
1. Animal eats seed 2. Animal doesn't chew seed well 3. Animal poops seed on your lawn 4. Enjoy your poop squash!
I guess I shouldn't have left out the /s.
*Aggressively gestures at number 4*
4 🫲🫲🫲🫲🫲 🤣
As is my understanding all German crops are poop crops can anyone confirm?
thats why they are called volunteers
Eat the bloom
I got squash plants in my compost, I just didn't think they'd decide to randomly pop up in my yard!

Yellow squash. Boil it, slather with butter, salt and pepper it and get some natural vitamin A for yourself

This is what happens when you don't throw out your old Halloween pumpkins.
That is very possible actually, we had our pumpkins until they were flat haha.
I have good news for you! Free carving pumpkins this year!

It looks like a zucchini
That’s what I thought. I’ve eaten the flowers a couple of times (in the fall where I live). They are amazing.
Not with tendrils, pumpkin or butternut most likely.
Enjoy your unplanned for bounty!!
Find the male, pollinate then use zip tie to close shut. You’ll have a product for sure and also will have experienced plant porn

Shut up omg that sounds delish I’m going to find a recipe! I heard about dandelion heads but never stuffed squash blossom
Is lovely with some herb-infused ricotta cheese before frying 🙂
So the flower on my plant right now is male. Can I collect the pollen and wait until a female blooms to use it?
Yes. Use a paintbrush, like a watercolor brush, to collect the pollen and paint it onto the female flowers.
Is that squash or is it pumpkin 🎃 🤔
Technically a pumpkin is a squash, so...
Yes!
Maybe it was in your compost? (Seed)
Volunteer pumpkin?
