Rose of Sharon

Popular-Solution7697

Or, as it's pronounced in The Grapes Of Wrath - Rosasharn.

Cute-Designer8122

Rose of Sharon… a type of hardy hibiscus

ncdejesus

Thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Thanks! You're welcome!

Internal-Test-8015

be wary its very pretty but also invasive, they self-seed like crazy.

CheshireCat1111

They do! They come in several colors, bees and hummingbirds love them, and they spread everywhere. My neighbor planted a row of these along the edge of my yard years ago (SE Michigan). Every year I have to pull or dig out several hundred seedlings in my garden and yard. His back yard is now totally seedlings which he happily mows down once a week (doesn't know what they are, doesn't care). They've spread around to all the neighbors' yards.

hattenwheeza

Not in central NC they don't. We have a 55 year old hedge of them. No volunteers or offshoots whatsoever. Now I feel like I'm missing out!

Internal-Test-8015

I'm in new York, they spread like the plague down here I've collected a few for bonsai and started one from a cutting since they're already there and at least as bonsai they won't spread their prodigies further.

Illustrious-Towel-45

Looks like a Rose of Sharon.

JsMomz

Rose of Sharon. They spread underground and can get out of control, but they sure are pretty!

VioletAmethyst3

Um... Can they be kept in pots, by any chance? 😅

Livvylove

There are different varieties. Tree vs bush. You could manage to do that to the Bush types

VioletAmethyst3

Oo, thank you!! 🙏💜 I think this hibiscus is so pretty, but I would not want to cause any problems with growing one.

hattenwheeza

Where are you? They do not spread or reseed readily in central NC. My 55 year old hedge of them has not given a single volunteer.

VioletAmethyst3

I'm on the west side of the US currently. Renting an apartment, but if we ever become home owners, I would absolutely love to grow a few hibiscus varieties! 💜 (Also, one of my favorite teas are iced rose hibiscus with a few pumps of raspberry syrup, heh heh.)

Berndherbert

I believe they spread by seeds not by rhizomes. You can basically eliminate them getting out of control by cutting off the seed pods in the fall or applying a pre emergent around the base of the plants before the seeds can germinate in the spring. If they spread underground these methods would be ineffective.

rubyslippers3x

Exactly. I cut off the dead blooms last autumn. Only 3 plants sprouted this spring. The year before, I didn't realize it was going to reseed, and I had 50+ sprouts that following spring. You can get a seedless variety, so do some research if buying this plant.

NotARobotDefACyborg

Rose of Sharon. Very pretty and butterflies seem to like it a lot! 🥰

blurtlebaby

Bees and hummingbirds both love them.

meetmypuka

Beautiful! I've never seen a tree shape like that! Usually, they're more like tall, compact bushes! ETA typo

Living_Onion_2946

Looks like a huge rose of Sharon.

Goldielox-

Lowes has many varieties and colors of the rose of Sharon this year if you can’t source them from a local greenhouse🙂

Silly_Strike_706

Bluebird syriacus

CatReptileFishKeeper

I just bought one of these wow that pretty 😍

Prestigious-Pace-893

Rose of Sharon

kbtrpm

hibiscus.

kousaberries

Hibiscus syriacus

FreeThought1776

That's a Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus Syriacus) and a gorgeous one at that!

Terrapin2190

Ohh, it is a hibiscus? I have 4 or 5 on my property. They seem to like popping up in convenient places every 2 years or so and I let them just do their thing lol.

FileLeading

U can eat the flowers

Terrapin2190

Really! Now that I think about it, I have heard of people making hibiscus tea. Interesting! Thanks! You can eat them just right off the tree? Maybe after a rinse?

FileLeading

U can rinse them. So to me, the petals taste like a light lettuce but the flower buds (just before it starts blooming) tastes like a...cashew?

Terrapin2190

Huh. I wonder why bugs and deer tend to leave them alone. I'll have to try that some time, or maybe add them to a salad.

cnew111

Rose of Sharon. Can trim them down to a kind of bush or let it go to small tree size. Mine has white blossoms with reddish pink centers. I’m further north than you and mine hasn’t started blooming yet.

Brilliant_Meet_2751

Purdy!!

ArthurCSparky

I have six of them rooting as we speak. So easy to grow (most areas in zones 6 to 9) and propagate.

Livid-Improvement953

I have a few double petaled seedless ones! White with pink stripes and some blue ones. Haven't had issues with reseeding. I have a really black thumb too and these are easy. More blooms if you fertilize in spring.

grubeard

one came with my house they never get too big very low maintenance and as you can see flowering this time of year.

FileLeading

We had a rose of Sharon for 30 years in the yard, it was under another tree & never spread anywhere else. Same with other rose of Sharon hibiscus trees at other properties. I've never seen them spread. I guess it depends on the climate.

Sallydog24

wow, that's amazing looking. Mine is in full bloom now but it's more a bush rather than a tree.

Electrical-Echo8770

Some people call them a butterfly bush because they attract butterflies .

ABQ87102

My the flowers are pretty!

being-andrea

I have two in Minnesota that are 3 and 4 years old. They are the survivors of maybe 6 that I got from Ohio. They are small, but they are alive. Our winters are harsh and im pretty sure that they aren't supposed to live here.

MS1947

Rose of Sharon. Non-native where I live. They can be invasive.

Many_Square_4318

I like the color my had a few of those ❤️

Vault_Hunter01

Pretty to look at but overly invasive

chronicplantbuyer

Don’t spread misinformation. In a controlled environment where pruning is done and things are maintained, they won’t be a problem. Like anything, if it gets too out of control, yes, problems will ensue, but here it is clearly taken care of.

Vault_Hunter01

I used to prune the one I had when I first moved into the home I live in now. Even with pruning, I still ended up with too many. A couple of years ago, I had them removed. And guess what's growing up outside right now ? So don't lecture me on misinformation. I'm still dealing with these.

Internal-Test-8015

it's not misinformation they self-propagate like crazy even if maintained trust me I live in a neighborhood chocked full of them and they still get around.

ncdejesus

In case anyone was wondering, this tree was at Wade Lagoon by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
