Black raspberries, Rubus occidentalis. I found a patch of these growing behind my job's main office a few years ago and glom down a handful of them whenever I can. Definitely one of the tastier wild berries I've had.
What are the main differences between them and blackberries? (I guess I could Google it too)
Edit: black raspberries have hollow centers because when you pick them the center stays on the vine , whereas blackberries have a fleshy white membrane that stays intact when picked. (From what my quick googling gathered)
I was gonna say... Black raspberries taste way better than blackberries to me. I've seen tons of posts lately from ppl asking what they are and everyone says blackberries. It's way too early for blackberries and black raspberries don't even look like blackberries...
Yep— we have these on my family’s farm. We called them “black caps.” They are definitely not poisonous, but hopefully they haven’t been sprayed by someone. (One year we avoided a whole patch because a farmhand was using pesticide on a field nearby.)
These grew everywhere around my childhood home. My friends and I would go out with baskets to pick them and my mom would bake pies out of the ones we gathered. 🥧
Blasphemy! What next, we will have black dewberries, black loganberries, black boysenberries, black salmonberries, black gooseberries, black marionberries, black tayberries, black cloudberries, black thimbleberries, black wineberries, black olallieberries, black veitchberries, black skellyberries, black silvanberries, black tummelberries, black hildaberries, black youngberries, and black blackberries!
It's always astounding to me that black raspberries pop up so frequently here. Maybe I was just fortunate to grow up on them?
Hollow center, raspberry. Stem attached, blackberry (also way bigger). Long(ish) with stem attached and growing on a tree, mulberry.
Either way, eat raw or jam or pie.
Good find.
Me too! Raspberries, black raspberries and blackberries were ALL OVER our property growing up. And I see these posts often (that's fine, ppl wanna know), but everyone says they're blackberries, which drives me nuts!
As far as I recall, in north America, any berry that grows in pluck-able clusters like this is edible. So, blackberries, raspberries, wineberries, mulberries. Any berry that grows like those, with many little bits merged together in one greater berry, is ok to eat. Note- I am not a professional, I just like eating things.
Soak and rinse your berries (bugs love to be in the center) before eating!
Also, if it’s not your land, be careful— they could’ve been sprayed with pesticide.
As far as I'm aware, if you're in North America, there's not that many blackberry lookalikes. The ones we do have are usually edible. If you find a plant that looks like blackberries, it's probably blackberries. Be careful about pesticides, though. But if it's on your fence you're probably aware of anything that's been sprayed on it.
They're two completely different fruits, they're not at all the same thing. The blackberries pull off the plant whole while the raspberries pull off like a cap, leaving a white center plug left on the plant
What do you call [blackberries](https://images.app.goo.gl/jDVoksQsEGp2pcmDA) then?
These are [black raspberries](https://images.app.goo.gl/FkgStS5LM1Z2Lf9AA), or as my family has always called them, “black caps.”
*Lift the leaves and look*
*If they're white because those look*
*Like black raspberries*

Don’t know of any lookalike raspberries that are poisonous.
Google is wrong too. Google said that cloud berries are poisonous which I’ve never heard of.
Nope, just a blackberry bush! I have one too and I'm saving and freezing all my berries so I can make something wonderful this winter when I need something sunny 🌞
I would advise to make sure they aren't at the high of a dog can urinate on them and also when you get them home put them in some warm water with little sugar in a sink or shallow bowl and leave them for a bit. That should draw out any worms etc that are in them. The worms aren't harmful but it's best to be sure plus the sugar will make them not as bitter or tart. The wash them off be good to eat or cook them in a pie, make jam etc.
Growing up my grandpa had a huge patch of these raspberries and blackberry bushes in the backyard. Core memory is taking a basket and picking as many as we can for my mom and grandma to make pies and jams and other desserts
Have I been eating this wrong my whole life? Everybody is commenting that they should be harvested, but as far as I’m aware, they aren’t ripe yet? Hence why they’re called “black raspberries” because you harvest them when they’re black?
Nobody has brought that up lol
Those are blackberries. Had them growing behind my garage when I was a kid. Wait until they’re darker though, even the one in your hand is still pretty red
*Super poisonous,*
*Only thing more poisonous*
*Would be strawberries*

You can also add that raspberry stems are round while blackBerry are more squared to your differentiation.
Super tart

They are poisonous when they are red.
As they haven’t fully matured
They are NOT poisonous when they are red, they just don't taste as good as when they are black.
I think this is false.
These grew everywhere around my childhood home. My friends and I would go out with baskets to pick them and my mom would bake pies out of the ones we gathered. 🥧
Yep. Had a pretty good stand of these I planted on one side of my garden.
You are super lucky! Black raspberries are fantastic.
Only poisonous if your allergic to black berries
black raspberries.

I probably shouldnt tell you about the white blackberries I am growing...
Great now all rainbow berries lives matter!
Geez. Don't get your dingle berries in a knot...

I have a MASSIVE patch of these along my back fence. It's almost 20 feet long and full of berries. The birds usually get them before I do though.

There is one poisonous aggregate berry in NA, goldenseal, but it grows in the very center of the leaf and is easy to spot
Came here to say this. Pretty sure it applies to Europe, as well.
You've been blessed with the finest berry there is (black raspberry). Make some jam, and you'll be in heaven! Edit: added berry type
Reminds me of being a kid with purple hands being asked where the berries i picked were lol

They are memberberries.

We call them blackberries in the uk

I’d never heard of a black raspberry but I have now
And you are correct, there are no inedible aggregate berries in North America, except for goldenseal but that doesn't look close to the same
Lift the leaves and look if they're white because those look like black raspberries

The stalks are chalky green, they're definitely black raspberries. I grow all sorts of bramble berries

Yes. Box em up and ship them to me for human ... I mean humane... disposal!
Wild wineberries will be ripe in a few weeks. 😀
Bag them all up and send them to me so I can dispose of them.
Black raspberries, best native fruit in the entire country! You are very very lucky! My mom used to make pancake syrup with these! 😋
No they are delicious
Nope
No raspberry
My god! They’re disgusting! Where? Where do I find them?
Nope, just a blackberry bush! I have one too and I'm saving and freezing all my berries so I can make something wonderful this winter when I need something sunny 🌞
Yeah they are super duper -- everybody else is wrong, but also please collect them all and send them to me thanks /s
So amazing and in the wild your lucky bastard
All aggregate type (i.e. blackberries, raspberries, boysenberries, etc.) berries are safe to eat, non-poisonous.
If you're in North America, no. There are no poisonous compound berries on this continent

Wow. Just wow.
Shit no, those are raspberries man.
Don't eat the ones at dog pee height! Lol
Ummm, yeah, highly poisonous….just tell me where they are and I will come take them away when they turn black…😉
Eat a handful and find out.

Eat em 😋
Deadly. ☠️ /s. <—— Just in case.
I read once that no lobulated berries (like raspberries and blackberries) in the us are poisonous. Not sure if it’s true or not.
My yard is full of them!
Those are blackberries. Had them growing behind my garage when I was a kid. Wait until they’re darker though, even the one in your hand is still pretty red
Wild black raspberries...the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice.
It's JAM TIME!
Probably not. Just eat some and find out.
Super poisonous, only thing more poisonous would be strawberries
