Shirley MacLaine wearing Edith Head in What a Way to Go!
It’s been 17 (!!!) years and I still have never coveted a dress as much as Keira Knightly’s Atonement dress.
It definitely belongs in a costume museum somewhere.
I wore a emerald slinky backless prom dress in 2004 - before Atonement so when this movie came out & I saw it without knowing it existed I was just flabbergasted. It was the dress of my dreams. And then the movie was amazing and heartbreaking. I was basically devastated in a kinda good way at the end.
ETA: the dress I picked was actually based on the dress from How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days but yellow is NOT my color
I LOVE the ACMI museum, such fantastic exhibits. I'm pretty sure that was the one with the Marilyn Monroe dresses? Seven Year Itch and maybe a beaded Some Like it Hot? The music video one and the set design ones still live in my mind rent-free! Alas I'm in the UK for the foreseeable but can't wait to visit again in years to come.
To this day I wonder why no fashion brand so far had released a knock off/inspired by dress like it. Many did with the "how to lose a guy in 10 days" dress, but my skin tone won't let me wear yellow...
I didn’t know what I was feeling, but pretty sure the way she looked in that dress and how it made me feel was a combination of awe and my bi awakening.
first i'm seeing it and i'm obsessed. off to search for other angles
[E: wtf the dress has its own wikipedia page!!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_dress_of_Keira_Knightley)
Desperately Seeking Susan came out in 1987, I think, and I STILL want that green sequined dress Roseanna Arquette wears after her first night with Aidan Quinn. Green dresses have a habit of staying in the memory!
The opera/ballet house in the city where I live staged a ballet based on Atonement (mostly the book ofc) a few months ago. I was so excited for it i got a ticket for the premiere. I do have a lot of compliments and a lot of things to say, but one of them were interesting costumes. Cecilia, Keira Knightley’s character in the movie, is also wearing a green costume for the larger part of the ballet, although the shade of green and the cut is different. I do think it could’ve been an intentional reference, because the dress from the movie is truly legendary.

Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic. The costume designer for the film was Judianna Makovsky.
Arwen's (Liv Tyler's) dress is so hard, I even remember back in the Extended bts of Return of the King, the costume department explaining all the thematic reasons that they chose green instead of white for a wedding/coronation dress and why that specific shade of green. And it looks even greater in the film.
So, Arwen's whole get-up in that scene was based around the theme of a butterfly. I guess she represented a transitional period both for Elves and for Men. If you can find a close up picture of Liv's headpiece, the back of it is worked to look like a butterfly. Although they didnt say which species specifically, to me it looks like a Lunar Moth, which is fitting because it represents a natural waning of the age of Elves much like the moon inevitably wanes from view, and also because the Lunar Moth is a very similar shade of green. The directors said they wanted Liv in green, and the costume designer wanted a shade that was blue enough that it brought out Liv's eyes whilst still being yellow enough that it was visibly green. And that was the shade they landed on. Srsly, Lotr is one of the original pieces of media that got me interested not only in filmmaking but also fashion, they put so much thought and hardwork into every costume. Ngila Dickson is a fuckin legend.
(Edit: also I dont wanna front as if I remembered all that off the dome, I did just have to look up the clip again since its been about 8 years since I last watched it. I can drop the yt link here if you'd like, its got commentary on a bunch of the costumes not just Arwen's.)
Coming up:
Link 1: https://youtu.be/1_zIKtEPXos?feature=shared
This is the original segment from the behind the scenes. The piece on Arwen's costumes comes at the very end but you have a bunch of different costumes to look at from Smeagol's flashback costume to Eowyn's dresses.
Link 2: https://youtu.be/Gzxen1UKhFk?feature=shared
Just a bonus one for you that I found whilst looking at the original clip. This is actually a podcast with Ngila Dickson the head costume designer from December of last year. I actually havent watched this whole video, (its over an hour long as opposed to the video you actually asked for which is only 12 minutes, so I get it if you dont wanna listen to the whole thing, but she talks at length about a bunch of costumes she made for many different movies.) She talks specifically about the Coronation scene and Arwen's dress at 42:56. Its Chaptered "The Coronation".
I hope you find these fun to watch, the BTS documentaries from the Lotr extended editions are a huge part of my childhood almost moreso than the actual movies!
Without having read the background about the costume, I just picked up "spring" vibes from the light green color palette. There was a tree at Minas Tirith, the white tree of Gondor, that was just showing the small new leaves of spring after being bare during the conflict in previous scenes.

Technically not a dress but I loved GP’s outfit by Donna Karan in Great Expectations.

Reminds me of the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the movie “War and Peace” haha

“Gilda,” costumes designed by Jean Louis. Redheads look amazing in green (even if Rita Hayworth wasn’t a natural redhead)!
It's not solid green but Kim Novak's Edith Head gown in Vertigo.
https://preview.redd.it/cu0dn9fuk94d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd7da8a3e087287b02b48bfdebc9fddf553c9bdd
This is THE definition of costume carries the message. The fact that her entire back is covered in green, but its mostly concealed when you first saw her fit perfectly into Vertigo.
Man I love that movie
Colleen Atwood and Ann Roth are pretty prolific and have done some beautiful stuff. It's hard to compare with Edith Head though. She made gorgeous clothes for kind of everyday women. Colleen Atwood has done "normal" costumes but imo her best work is in stuff like Tim Burton movies and Snow White and the Huntsman where she could go big and fantastic and a bit crazy.
Sandy Powell, especially starting from her arthouse/experimental cinema roots with Derek Jarman and Tilda Swinton, to working with Tilda again in Sally Potter's Orlando, then going on to things like Scorsese's Gangs of New York and The Aviator then doing Disney's Cinderella, and Todd Haynes' Carol in one year (2015).
I’ve only seen 13 going on 30 once but Judy Greer’s green and black lace dress always stuck in my mind as super gorgeous. I also just love Judy Greer in anything!
https://preview.redd.it/656fbxy5aa4d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ce4162b687d8392789dff3682986269af14a01c
Might I also add Marion Cotillard in Allied?

The green two piece is stuck in my mind because I love her in it. But looking through images, she also wore a mint green dress when she asks Finn to the dance as a teen, a green mini dress dancing with Finn as teens in the mansion and a muted moss green crushed velvet backless dress near the end. I don't know how to insert an image though :(
There’s a Donna Karan two piece that keeps coming up when I search but that’s not even the one I was thinking of. It was a more velvety asymmetrical dress.

The only thing I recall about Atonement is that dress. Not a single detail about that movie has stayed with me but the costume designer of that film did WORK.

I remember it being absolutely devastating but I completely forget what it was... Which could be something good for me so I can be surprised again. All I remember is that there is a betrayal by a sister, if that is even true.
Oh wait I vaguely have some of it coming back to memory...... Still, very vague.
i know it's not a dress but did anyone else feel personally victimized by cate in this look

I would die happy in her walking suit tbh
That is one amazing dress, was this Dracula as well? It looks like such different colors in the two pics, I wonder which one is closer to the real thing?
Yes! It’s in the party scene where we first meet her suitors. I believe the green on the left is a lot more accurate (from what is seen in the movie), as I believe the picture on the right has had a cold filter added!
[I'm not sure if it counts because it's technically a cape that's part of the outfit, but Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face?](https://www.lizdress.com/media/catalog/product/cache/e4d64343b1bc593f1c5348fe05efa4a6/image/11203e4e/audrey-hepburn-inspired-emerald-green-evening-coat-dress-funny-face-costume.jpg)
Clue has always been a favorite movie for me and I absolutely LOVE the styling in it. Pic 15 is a perfect match for her character too. I always thought it must have been so tight to move around in though.
So many good picks here 😫 all of the gowns from cleopatra have stood the test of time, the Christina Aguilera Burlesque dress, the dress Kate Winslet wore in Titanic… I gag green is SUCH an underrated color

Vivian Leigh’s costumes in Gone With the Wind gave me a lifelong interest in the history of fashion. I designed and sewed a series of historical costumes for Barbie dolls when I was in high school for a French class - starting from
Belle Epoque Charles Worth looks, going all the way to Dior New Look dresses and bar suits and a YSL Le Smoking suit. Wish I had kept them or photographed them - phone cameras weren’t as ubiquitous in 2004.

Ps I love these color posts so much 🥹
For decades, Hollywood dressed a lot of female Middle Eastern characters in modified [lehenga choli and dupatta](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghagra_choli) ensembles. That's what Hedy Lamarr wore as Delilah. (She was typecast as "exotic" because had black hair and was foreign — albeit from Austria.)
The Wiki article on [lehenga](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehenga) has more modern examples.

The Atonement dress is my Roman Empire. I think about it nearly daily and I get stupid butterflies whenever I see it. I love it, I love Keira, I love James McAvoy, I love that book, I love that movie, I love THAT scene. I’d want to have a replica made for myself but also I know I’d never be able to come close to that perfection. Mad respect.
I love everything about Rose’s costume designs on titanic. They were all so memorable. Years later that red dress, the one where she runs away from the dinner table in, lives in my head rent free.

Anne Hathaway. Someday I'm going to buy this dress. 🤞🏻
I was obsessed with Romy Schneider and the Sissi movies when I was younger. Those costumes were amazing and they knew how to walk and run in them elegantly.
I love the Clue dress. I also love the Atonement dress but could never wear it. I would look fabulous in the Clue one. Mrs. White’s dress is also beautiful with the unique arms and beautiful coordinating coat. Also Madeline Kahn is such a fabulous actress.

It’s silk cut on the bias and is expensive to make. It would look horrible if it wasn’t crafted correctly with the right fabric.
I read somewhere that it wasn’t even an actual dress but separate skirt, sash and top. And so fragile that several pieces broke during filming
Green with envy over this dress.

Reminds me of the dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the movie “War and Peace” haha But, seriously, tho, OP should be ashamed for not including this ethereal look in their post. https://i.redd.it/9ky8v00q2b4d1.gif
What I was looking for 😆
Right? I was so excited when I saw no one else yet had posted Fiona! 😍

This is one of my favorite looks in all this green. So Audrey.
https://preview.redd.it/7nsas5j0u94d1.jpeg?width=1955&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abc4684e7623bcf8456b955c7571bc64b0022f73 “Gilda,” costumes designed by Jean Louis. Redheads look amazing in green (even if Rita Hayworth wasn’t a natural redhead)!
I'm always surprised to learn who isn't a natural redhead despite being fully associated with it. Any Adams was a big surprise for me.
It's not solid green but Kim Novak's Edith Head gown in Vertigo. https://preview.redd.it/cu0dn9fuk94d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd7da8a3e087287b02b48bfdebc9fddf553c9bdd
The back is the best part. https://preview.redd.it/20vpaonwk94d1.jpeg?width=168&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec167d71c0fed7555f18707f869f8224c5d13c7c
This is THE definition of costume carries the message. The fact that her entire back is covered in green, but its mostly concealed when you first saw her fit perfectly into Vertigo. Man I love that movie
Yea, I'm a total Edith Head worshipper. I think she was an absolute genius.
Edith was a force, a phenomena. Do you think there’s anyone comparative making cinema fashion today?
Kim Novak reminds me of the era when actresses would have signature colors. Someone correct me if I’m wrong bur I think hers was lilac.
I’ve only seen 13 going on 30 once but Judy Greer’s green and black lace dress always stuck in my mind as super gorgeous. I also just love Judy Greer in anything! https://preview.redd.it/656fbxy5aa4d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3ce4162b687d8392789dff3682986269af14a01c
Cate Blanchett is so iconic in the older, intimidating woman roles.
Does [Cate Blanchett as Hela](https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelstudios/comments/77mooo/cate_blanchett_as_hela_with_director_taika/) count?
She was perfect as Hela.
https://preview.redd.it/mxyck0gvk94d1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7387ce122e942cd5fee57bbc8b50f62787935b12 Ozma in Return to Oz.
Those movies were a fever dream
Totally. I was obsessed with it when I was young
My childhood self absolutely never recovered from this dress 💚
Might I also add Marion Cotillard in Allied? https://preview.redd.it/63fdzuldm94d1.jpeg?width=2640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=255cd3334c70364714f93c3c20502b04da91edae
Oh my word. That one took my breath away!!
Same especially in that second pic 😍
This looks blue to me?
Oh no here we go again
Where is the Gwyneth Paltrow dress from great Expectations?
The green two piece is stuck in my mind because I love her in it. But looking through images, she also wore a mint green dress when she asks Finn to the dance as a teen, a green mini dress dancing with Finn as teens in the mansion and a muted moss green crushed velvet backless dress near the end. I don't know how to insert an image though :(
There’s a Donna Karan two piece that keeps coming up when I search but that’s not even the one I was thinking of. It was a more velvety asymmetrical dress.
Natalie in “The Other Boleyn Girl.” YES.
I hated the movie but the dress was stunning
The movie was so good. It was just fast paced.

Hell fucking yes. This is one of my top 3 movies because of the costumes and set design.
I will never understand the absolute perfection of Christina Aguilera in that dress. 1000000/10.
Honestly, that whole look was stunning.
The costumes for that movie were so on point
The only thing I recall about Atonement is that dress. Not a single detail about that movie has stayed with me but the costume designer of that film did WORK.
Closeup of the detail on the neckline https://preview.redd.it/1p1bbzc7n94d1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c8c292ad1de778b8702d75146e295a1ee55f9ab
Oh man, that movie ending wrecked me right up. Took me years to see it again because of how devastating it was.
I remember it being absolutely devastating but I completely forget what it was... Which could be something good for me so I can be surprised again. All I remember is that there is a betrayal by a sister, if that is even true. Oh wait I vaguely have some of it coming back to memory...... Still, very vague.
The sisters betrayal is a core plot point so that’s accurate. Have tissues ready if you decide to rewatch it.
i know it's not a dress but did anyone else feel personally victimized by cate in this look https://preview.redd.it/hixu6qodbb4d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cd2c89ee302480c5959d40a16c5c6593fcdb4f1f
i saw her in that and my face instantly warms from a massive celeb crush moment. The only other time i've ever felt that was when I saw Winston Duke as M'baku in the first black panther movie lmao
Oh I see we have similar (excellent) taste
She served so hard in that movie holy hell
https://preview.redd.it/95y5yu4bq94d1.jpeg?width=236&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df206506c03ed999fd1cc2b30c63acd605bee508 Drew Barrymore in Ever After…. Another one I wish I could wear. Maybe I’ll just go to a renaissance fair lol

SISTAS!
I’m loving these posts!
Yay! Shout out to Clue! My favorite movie.
The dress from The Other Boleyn Girl was the most beautiful thing to me as a child. I didn’t watch the movie until I was in high school but I loved the cover of the DVD case lol
Winona Ryder has like 3 amazing Victorian dresses in Dracula
https://preview.redd.it/epcox6gpma4d1.jpeg?width=519&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60136a65780752fe893ab019d99104aa5acfb919 I would die happy in her walking suit tbh

ICONIC... the back of that dress!!! A total dream.
Thanks! I knew someone would post the pic 😅
Oh that absolutely counts in my opinion. That is one amazing costume and the green is in her hair too, it looks fabulous!!
The atonement dress is The Green Dress
Thee Atonement dress is my favorite 💚
Cate Blanchett is always stunning and always high fashion.
No one beats Kierra. Stunning
That dress from atonement is easily one of my top ten costume moments.

But not a real green dress...that's cruel.
Haven’t you always wanted a mon-KEY!
It’s a great post.. 💚 💚💚
We must not forget Vivian Leigh as Scarlett in Gone with the Wind - the dress made of green velvet curtains. https://preview.redd.it/ksrs042nia4d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=deffa59235a64c47676a8deb6883f77372f3c664

Keira 💚💚💚
This whole post (and the comments) is just fabulous! 😍💚
Vivian Leigh’s costumes in Gone With the Wind gave me a lifelong interest in the history of fashion. I designed and sewed a series of historical costumes for Barbie dolls when I was in high school for a French class - starting from Belle Epoque Charles Worth looks, going all the way to Dior New Look dresses and bar suits and a YSL Le Smoking suit. Wish I had kept them or photographed them - phone cameras weren’t as ubiquitous in 2004.

Ok… hear me out. This has lived rent free in my head since I was a young girl. Hillary Duff from the Lizzie McGuire Movie https://preview.redd.it/x34vpdpbtg4d1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bdc3ecb917e928a98df6c9258d92b5d4cf998546
I don’t have the nerve but I wish I could wear period piece dresses with lots of velvet or liv Tyler’s lots of the rings dress 🥹😭 Ps I love these color posts so much 🥹
For decades, Hollywood dressed a lot of female Middle Eastern characters in modified [lehenga choli and dupatta](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghagra_choli) ensembles. That's what Hedy Lamarr wore as Delilah. (She was typecast as "exotic" because had black hair and was foreign — albeit from Austria.) The Wiki article on [lehenga](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehenga) has more modern examples.
Atonement 💚
Kim Basinger in LA Confidential!
No Color can compete with the richness of dark green
Honourable mention should be Alicent Hightower's green dresses.
The dress Christina wears in Burlesque (picture 14) will always be gorgeous 😍 she looks stunning in that dress!
I’ll keep this simple. I love green, it’s my favorite color. Thank you for this, love them all.

I will NEVER get over Christina Aguilera in that green dress with her hair like that 😍😭 ugh
Miss Scarlett for the win! I still want that dress!

Wow
Marilyn killed it as always
Lea’ Seydoux always looks flawless but I’ve never seen her look more beautiful than in this pic of her!
Love these1
I was obsessed with Romy Schneider and the Sissi movies when I was younger. Those costumes were amazing and they knew how to walk and run in them elegantly.
Christina’s Burlesque dress 🤌🏼
Ok so this post made me realize how much I love green dresses!
Why is it so hard to buy green clothing in stores? When you do find something, it sells out so quickly.
Cyd wore it best. Always and forever, whatever “it” happened to be 🔥
That dress on Keira is top tier
I love the Clue dress. I also love the Atonement dress but could never wear it. I would look fabulous in the Clue one. Mrs. White’s dress is also beautiful with the unique arms and beautiful coordinating coat. Also Madeline Kahn is such a fabulous actress.
