Covid wrecked the end of season 1 filming plans, the actor playing Mat quit for unknown reasons, and they had to re-write season 1 episodes 7 and 8. Of course that left season 2 to start with everything out of place and needing to get everyone together in Falme. People have different opinions on how well the writers managed.

Season 2 was completely rewritten to get the story from where it ended at the Season 1 rewrites to where it was planned to be at the start of Season 3.
They're really going to have to nail Season 3.

We likely won't know for years yet how this particular sausage was made.
