They announced several years ago that it would be out by 2023 at the earliest, I wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t come out for another several years.
They did a full re-write of the code with riot money. The goal, I think, was to make modding much easier. They release updates very rarely but claim it’s going well and that they are ramping up now. The reality is the original footage we saw was merely a tech demo.

Honestly I’m not too attached to the idea of ever playing this game. If ends up releasing, nice, I’ll try it. If not then whatever. There’s other good games out there.
Vintage Story for example is fantastic for a game that’s still in early access. It may have a different aesthetic to hytale, but it does a lot of the things that hytale promised, like being built to be very easy to customize and make mods for. They even made a free and easy to use software for creating models. Even in its unfinished state it’s got a ton of content to explore. I’ve already put hundreds of hours into it, and it has a thriving community. Hytale could have had that if they just let people play test

I imagine canceling their indie funding program (which I know nothing about) probably just means that they’re not going to fund any new indie projects? No clue to be honest. As I said in a different comment, I’m really not too fussed about Hytale anymore. I was excited the first couple years of waiting, but at this point I just don’t care what happens anymore

I paid $26 for Minecraft years ago and have gotten plenty of free updates and free access to the more expensive version. They don't really need to update the game (Java at least), the game has infinite possibilities and even more if you mod it. I have over 5000 hours in Minecraft and my next most played game is at 550. Most of my playtime is in an older version as well, was still playing 1.8.9 when 1.17 released

Because no matter Minecraft's popularity, it still has insane amount of issues. Literally all of my buddies who grew up playing Minecraft (some of us played literally since like classic/infdev) wait for Hytale because it could be the game Minecraft never was, even though sometimes we get together to play modded Minecraft
I’m unironically waiting for the day Mojang discontinues Java edition (since it doesn’t make enough money) so all mods will finally be able to stay on the same version. Only reason I say this is because Mojang has basically disappointed everyone to some degree more with each update, and especially with those dumbass mob votes that were deliberately inserted by Microsoft to stir up drama so people talk about the game more. It’s only a matter of time before Java gets discontinued IMO, since it’s clear that Microsoft has been aggressively shifting the game to be more profitable and theyll never be able to do what they’ve done to Bedrock on Java without enraging the playerbase.

Riot games owned them, and riot is far from transparent with new projects, they always says shit like "project thing will be a MMO game on runeterra!" And never elaborate further, only announcing it years later
They made a deal with riot games which gave them an insane amount of funding compared to what they had before. Consequently they had much more creative freedom and could widen the scope of the game, as they no longer had to sacrifice stuff they wanted for lack of funding. Because of this, they had to essentially rebuild the game from scratch, thus the development timeline being super stupid
At this point they've lost so much of their original audience when the first trailer came out because now we've all got jobs and stuff and can't play video games as much as we'd like
The hype is plateauing until they release more information, and when they do, it’s going to blow up again. Hytale has the benefit of being built in C++, which allows them to be cross-platform, cross-progression, and extremely well-optimized right out of the gate.
They are actually interacting with the community and answering lots of questions on Twitter, these days, and also began internal play-testing late last year.

yeah, no, they showed a pretty extensive part of the features that were about to be added. Stuff like the story, new blocks, new mobs, are pretty superficial, especially since it's supposed to be UGC focused.
They had to remake the game in a new engine, but considering the bank they're making with hypixel, the fact that the concepts and art were already made/finalized, you'd expect at least a pre-alpha after 5 years.
