Sucks for Pito, but you wonder if this is the end of the line. He’s still owed $30 million by the Astros so he obviously will clear waivers.
Can’t imagine teams are going to be lining up to give him major league chances based on his last year and a half. Does he settle for a minor league deal? Is there some desperate team that gives him one more chance?
People thought Pujols was washed up but he came back and had a great final season with the Cardinals and Pujols was a lot older than Abreu. It would be nice to bring Abreu back on a minimum contract. Nothing to lose.
Pujols at his worst was still fairly close to a league average hitter. Pito's OPS+ this year is 4. That said, if he was on the roster for the last home game this year, I'd be there crying like I was dropping my kid off at college.
Honestly to this point there has been absolutely nothing that would bring me to a game this year.
But seeing Jose in a Sox uniform one last time? I’d head to the ballpark for that.
We all watched the end of Jose Abreu’s career - he wore a White Sox jersey and the handwriting was on the wall in ‘22. Funny one of the really good things the previous regime did was squeeze every last positive drop out of Jose’s bat and NOT throw good money away to bring him back. That the Astros, of all clubs, chose to is perhaps telling of the decline of that organization. The brain drain from a long-term winner is real - nobody wants to be on the bench of the front office when other organizations think you’re a rising star because you rub shoulders with greatness.
If a team claims him off of waivers they will owe him that 30 mil. Won’t happen in a million years. After that any team can sign him for any amount of money. He will still get the 30 mil no matter what. He’d just be getting paid 2 contracts. 30 mil and league minimum most likely.
This organization owes him a final farewell at-bat.
Send him off proper, give him the thank you deserving of a man who carried a bumblefuck organization on his back for nearly a decade. We would have been where we are right now a whole hell of a lot earlier if it weren't for him and TA. I'm 100% against people giving Jerry Reinsdorf *any* money, but I would make an exception for a Jose Abreu send-off game. Sell that fucker out, and let Pito know that we appreciate him for everything he did for us.
The organization doesn’t owe him a thing.
They tried to give him a farewell and he refused to even play.
The best decision they made in a while was to let him go.
Yes he was great for the Sox. Yes we loved him.
But not need to bring him back.
Right. He was a good player and good citizen during his Sox career, but people act like he’s Konerko, Hurt, etc. Sox don’t need him taking a single AB from someone who could possibly be a part of the future.
Paulie gave up more $ multiple times to stay in Chicago. Jose went to public enemy number 1 for a few more million. I love Jose, and I mostly blame the Sox org at this point, but he is not Paulie or the big hurt
Lol what player on this roster is going to be part of the future?
Vaughn? Gavin Sheets? Eloy?
None of them are going to be part of the future and they all suck. May as well bring back Abreu for the min and let him get some abs at 1b and DH like Paulie did in 2013.
Yeah. Literally all of those players plus anyone they could bring up like Elko.
Rolling Abreu out Weekend at Bernie’s style is really how you want to remember him?
None of Vaughn, Sheets, or Eloy have a future with this org. I would love to see all of them DFA'd.
I'd be fine with giving Elko abs but it seems more likely theyre going to run out the other trio and I'd rather see the corpse of Jose hit then put up with Eloy anymore.
For one game, sure.
Also, Vaughn isn't even hitting his weight this year. His OPS is below *.700*, in a power hitting position. Who gives a shit about Andrew Vaughn?
And you say *that* as if literally every team doesn't have special ceremonies celebrating important players in their histories, regardless of how well paid they are.
No, but there are obviously circumstances that would allow that to happen here.
1) Jose is a free agent
2) Andrew Vaughn is not performing
3) He didn't get a farewell at bat in his first tenure with the team.
4) The team is in contention for literally nothing other than the worst record in MLB history this year.
Literally nothing will be harmed by having Abreu show up for one game.
You're coming up with great ideas. Something bill veeck would've done.
This season is a wash. Letting the crowd make bullpen changes and decisions can't really be any worse and it would at least be fun.
Abreu doesn’t seem like a “farewell tour” kind of player. I could see him taking a 1 day deal to retire, but if he’s getting pitty playing time I don’t think he does it
Legitimately I’d be fine with it. He can’t hit for shit anymore. We can’t either and he won’t hurt us either.
Let him retire on the Southside. It won’t change shit for our season.
Kind of hope he doesn't try to play anywhere else, I don't want any other fanbase to sour on him when he's bad. Even sox fans might do so against our will if we see him batting like Maldonado.
Reinsdorf would consider having to only pay his former first baseman league minimum salary a steal. Jose will be starting in AZ tonight. A couple more months of same caliber play from Tim Anderson and he’ll be back in a WS uniform as well. This strategy is called ‘restore the rebuild’ and WS front office believes it will work
A one game contract and a proper send off. Let him start, get an at-bat and let the fans give him a standing ovation. But I don't think Jose would want that. He's a proud man and I'm sure this season's struggles have been brutal for him.
He did and it didn’t really help much. In the 13 games since Abreu came back, he had a .519 OPS - which *was* an improvement on the .269 OPS he had prior to the demotion but still…not good.
He played five games for the **Rookie** league. Went 7-for-22 (.318) with 1 HR.
Then he played two games for AAA. 0-for-7. He struck out three times and grounded into double play once.
It would be such a white Sox move to bring him back for no reason other than trying to sell tickets.
This is going to be the test, I’ve always said Abreu is the guy that probably played a big role in the player moping around and not doing shit. If the Sox don’t bring him back then I feel like that will be proven 100%
As soon as I saw this on ESPN, I came right to this sub, praying that I wouldn’t see anyone advocating bringing him back, but knowing I absolutely would.
Jose *should* be honored and celebrated by the Sox for his contributions to the franchise!
That’s what:
* Pre/post game ceremonies
* Team walks/walls of fame
* Number retirements
* Entire “Day” on the schedule, with likeness bobblehead
* Ceremonial First pitches
* Ambassadorships
* Sections of the Stadium
* Statues
…are for.
Give Abreu any/all of those!
There is **zero** reason why it needs to be a live at bat in a major league game.
Sucks for Pito, but you wonder if this is the end of the line. He’s still owed $30 million by the Astros so he obviously will clear waivers. Can’t imagine teams are going to be lining up to give him major league chances based on his last year and a half. Does he settle for a minor league deal? Is there some desperate team that gives him one more chance?
....are we that desperate team? 😅
Desperate? Maybe to get people into seats and give him a farewell tour.
I’d go see us lose with Abreu. This is their chance to earn my $7 this year.
💯
People thought Pujols was washed up but he came back and had a great final season with the Cardinals and Pujols was a lot older than Abreu. It would be nice to bring Abreu back on a minimum contract. Nothing to lose.
Pujols at his worst was still fairly close to a league average hitter. Pito's OPS+ this year is 4. That said, if he was on the roster for the last home game this year, I'd be there crying like I was dropping my kid off at college.
Yeah Pujols lowest OPS+ was 79 in 2020, but we saw a jump with the Dodgers to 99 before the St. Louis farewell of 151 lol.
Whose spot is he going to take for this farewell tour?
Hell, pick one
Starting catcher sounds good to me
Are you asking because you also don't know who is on the roster anymore?
> get people into seats > Jerry Reinsdorf This is happening, isn’t it?
Doubt it. It was clearly the right decision to move on after 2022. And I don’t see any reason they would bring him back now.
can he play catcher?
We already have an all star catcher
This comment should be higher
Honestly to this point there has been absolutely nothing that would bring me to a game this year. But seeing Jose in a Sox uniform one last time? I’d head to the ballpark for that.
I don’t see any reason for him to want to come back, either.
Definitely the right decision, we wouldn’t want him dragging this 2024 team down!
He never played for the Royals, so no
Jerry doesn't care about your skills as long as you're one of his guys
If they can trade vaughn they’ll do it
Any new team he signs with will only pay him the league minimum. I think someone will take a flyer.
Guy will be 38 next season. It's definitely the end of the line for him.
We all watched the end of Jose Abreu’s career - he wore a White Sox jersey and the handwriting was on the wall in ‘22. We’re definitely bringing him back to sell some tickets and then he’ll retire a sox
I think he’d probably rather retire than come back here.
If he gets selected he has to play to get the astros money im pretty sure thats how a release works
If a team claims him off of waivers they will owe him that 30 mil. Won’t happen in a million years. After that any team can sign him for any amount of money. He will still get the 30 mil no matter what. He’d just be getting paid 2 contracts. 30 mil and league minimum most likely.
Sox should do it just to fuck the Astros out of that money.
We’re gonna suck regardless lmao I wouldn’t mind it
This organization owes him a final farewell at-bat. Send him off proper, give him the thank you deserving of a man who carried a bumblefuck organization on his back for nearly a decade. We would have been where we are right now a whole hell of a lot earlier if it weren't for him and TA. I think it’s an age thing. For younger fans, Jose IS their Konerko. Nostalgia is powerful.
Fair. I have two Jose Abreu blankets lol. He’s still an all time fav for me too. Balls of steel during his emigration to the states
Lol what player on this roster is going to be part of the future? Vaughn? Gavin Sheets? Eloy? None of them are going to be part of the future and they all suck. May as well bring back Abreu for the min and let him get some abs at 1b and DH like Paulie did in 2013.

You mean the ABs from these young’uns who are soon going to be a part of someone else’s future?
So is he taking Vaughn’s spot in lineup for nostalgic purposes ?
For one game, sure. Also, Vaughn isn't even hitting his weight this year. His OPS is below *.700*, in a power hitting position. Who gives a shit about Andrew Vaughn?
He was the hottest hitter in the Seattle series
And? He managed to bring his BA up from .217 to .227 with that hot stretch.

And you say *that* as if literally every team doesn't have special ceremonies celebrating important players in their histories, regardless of how well paid they are.

Every team isn't 18-53

Sure id give Frank an at bat.

You're coming up with great ideas. Something bill veeck would've done. This season is a wash. Letting the crowd make bullpen changes and decisions can't really be any worse and it would at least be fun.
Maybe tickets will be sold his first home game back, but watching a completely washed Abreu for more than a handful of games won't be worth watching
I agree, but it will get more fans in the seats to see his “farewell tour”
Abreu doesn’t seem like a “farewell tour” kind of player. I could see him taking a 1 day deal to retire, but if he’s getting pitty playing time I don’t think he does it

No chance, Abreu is not a former Royal
😂😂😂
PLEASE AT LEAST BRING HIM BACK ON A 1 GAME DEAL TO RETIRE HIM.
I think he unironically has a chance at joining our coaching staff this season if he wants to.
Please God no
Not sure he'd even want that. Even at his last home game he didn't even come out to give the fans a farewell wave.
I just want him to retire with us officially.
Getz licking his chops
Why? The guy never donned a Royals uni
We’d better at least give him a call to see what his plans are. We owe him that much.
If this is it, at least his final career highlights will just be him killing the Twins in a playoff series 😭
Let him clear waivers and then bring him back for league minimum.
There is zero harm in bringing him back and letting a legend retire with some dignity.
Not sure this team is the place to be for anyone who values dignity
Is it weird I agree with both of you
Kind of hope he doesn't try to play anywhere else, I don't want any other fanbase to sour on him when he's bad. Even sox fans might do so against our will if we see him batting like Maldonado.
A part of me believes that Jose in a Sox uniform will somehow find a way to bat like .260
I haven’t seen his stats this year but I’m confident he can be a top 9 hitter on this team
Especially summer Jose.
Can he play catcher?
When TA inevitably gets released, we’ll end up scooping him, Abreu and Avi up
Don’t even think about it, Chris. Unless it’s for Abreu to sign for a day to retire as a Sox
Royals have agreed to sign him for one day so he can then be signed by the White Sox.
We'll put the band back together, do a few gigs, we get some bread. Bang! Five thousand bucks

Really wonder what his numbers would have been if he was in the MLB for his whole career. Probably touches 400 HRs.
The Astros should have waited another weekend. I would have loved to see Abreu play in Guaranteed Rate this week.
By release that means he doesnt even have to clear waivers right?
Make this Voltron of Suck complete.
That’s awesome. I’m gonna have to remember it as a thing.
What are the odds he wants to manage?!
Come back home baby
Don't bring him back. We need better players.
This year is a lost cause, bring him back.
He left on a decent note. Why see him struggle awfully in our uniform? Pass.
Didn’t he go down to AAA to get this game going again? I was looking forward to cheering for him next week.
He did and it didn’t really help much. In the 13 games since Abreu came back, he had a .519 OPS - which *was* an improvement on the .269 OPS he had prior to the demotion but still…not good.
Damn. I was hoping for a return to form.
Worse. He went down to the Florida Complex League. Lower than Low-A to face late-round fillers in their mid- to late-20s
He played five games for the **Rookie** league. Went 7-for-22 (.318) with 1 HR. Then he played two games for AAA. 0-for-7. He struck out three times and grounded into double play once.
bring him back
welp might as well
You’ll complain about how poor the hitting on the team is and then you want to bring this guy back?
It would be such a white Sox move to bring him back for no reason other than trying to sell tickets. This is going to be the test, I’ve always said Abreu is the guy that probably played a big role in the player moping around and not doing shit. If the Sox don’t bring him back then I feel like that will be proven 100%
We’re getting the bad back together.
He’s done
Jerry will resign him probably, he loves washed up stars
Replace Pedro with him
Holy shit
Ooh boy this is going to be a polarizing thread
Re sign my MVP!!!
We totally should sign him. Bring him back. Jose Abreu bobble head night. He never got a proper farewell tour. The fans love him.
No thanks on bringing him back
Bring him back, let him play out the season and retire here. It’s not like we’re doing anything else.
Bring him back

Lol ok dawg…
I could see the Cubs take a flyer
Not a chance. I can't see a landing spot other than the White Sox.
maybe as manager lol
