It's less about firmware and more over how 32 bit systems/apps work. Unix time is normaly stored in milsecends since the epoch (December 31 1970 i think) and the max dec 31 2035 is the highest the value can go on and 32 bit intgur. You wolud bacly need to make everything 64 bit or change how the time is stored
Actually, this is some slight Nintendo weirdness. It *should* be able to go up until the beginning of 2038.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem
Edit: [It could theoretically go to 2050?](https://gbatemp.net/threads/why-the-wii-calendar-ends-at-2035.539312/post-8708646) I saw no sources or any real explanation though.
Edit again: [Found details](https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/319303/are-the-gamecube-wii-and-wii-u-vulnerable-to-the-year-2038-problem). Turns out it can theoretically go to 2136, but Nintendo limited it to 2050 for some reason. Basically, it uses the Unix timestamp, but as an unsigned int, allowing for another 98 years.

I'm not sure if the Wii checks for expiry, but the root certificate used for all software signing expires Jan 15, 2036. I'm guessing bad things will happen at that point. DRM really should be illegal

I've just tested this by set date to 12/31/2035 and clock to 23:59. At the time I wrote this comment the clock is 0:10 but the date is still 12/31/2035.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the date Unix’s time register rolls over in 2038.
Some people joke that this will be the day the singularity happens. It will likely be more like y2k, not much.

FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

The money spent in future proofing the tech and the money spent on upping tech budgets were not tacked on to finances that were already going towards existing programmer salaries, and most of the job positions were created to improve tech security due to fear of the bug. This ended up changing the landscape for tech as a whole afterwards, and put more emphasis on making tech sustainable, as well as keeping your tech current and supported.
Whether or not the argument of 'did they keep us from a disaster ' with the Y2K proofing is more nuanced, but was it a very expensive and time consuming set of projects? That is financially undeniable.
This could actually be a problem for modded Wii consoles with RiiConnect24… as I believe that channels like the Forecast channel and News Channel (and many channels more) require the date to be correct to actually work. So if this date comes and the system can’t properly update the time past that… then these channels could cease to function forever.
Dec 31 2050 is the latest date you can set on AC New Leaf. It’s kinda interesting to think about whether I’ll still be playing by those games or using those consoles by that point
The last day in the consoles and games calendars always scare me
Why don't you put inside the game the same system as computers and phones
And if it needs internet to work, now EVERYTHING can connect to internet
And if it needs a lot of memory, well se thing as internet, now EVERYTHING can have lots or, well, the right number of memory to mak such things work
Not exactly. NTP starts counting in 1900 for math reasons, and on a 32-bit time counter you only get 136 years or so, so anything that relies on NTP for time will also end up stopping in 2036. Mac OS stops in 2040, but it's because they start counting in 1904. Nintendo probably just capped it at 2035 so that you could pick any date from January 1 to December 31.
Don't remember precisely the explanation, but it has something to do with the Wii having something that's 32-bit. This is also the case with sum old photos, but a pc with a 64 bit CPU can go up to....well, a real high date
Mac OS had a similar problem. While you're correct, the particular date has more to do with what their epoch is; a 32-bit time counter has 136 years of range and if they start at January 1900 for math reasons, that means the number can't get any higher in 2036, and they probably just capped it off at 2035 so that you can pick any date on the calendar as opposed to it stopping you in February. It wasn't Nintendo's decision to start counting at 1900 though, but the designers of the Network Time Protocol, which helps synchronize computers to make sure that two computers communicating can agree on who came first. Why they started counting in 1900 as opposed to some time in the 1930s or 1940s when digital computers started appearing... I don't really know. Of course, there's no reason they couldn't have picked a closer year, the Mac OS started counting from 1904 for example, and Android starts counting from 1970.
The end of time. Synchronize your death watches guys.

To think we were afraid of Y2K and 2012 when the real date of the Armageddon was in Nintendo’s hands the whole time
In unrelated news, Silksong's real release date was announced, it's january 1st 2036
It’s simple. When we reach 2036, set the clock to 2008. It has the same calendar so you just have to ignore the year.

I've just tested this by set date to 12/31/2035 and clock to 23:59. At the time I wrote this comment the clock is 0:10 but the date is still 12/31/2035.
You've invented time travel. I call this an absolute win.
most likely it rolls over to the minimum date.
Can we just wait and see instead of guessing?
you asked.
you can set it yourself and just test it lol we dont need to wait 14 years
Maybe that one dude can just post tomorrow? So that we don't find out bad news in the future.
My guess is that it probably rolls back to January 1st 1970, as its the Unix epoch
IDK about the Wii, but the GameCube just keeps going once it hits its max time; you just can't set it beyond it manually

It'll probably keep counting until February 7, 2036. After that, either it just stops counting or it wraps around to the earliest date possible.
