It’s not too bad. Engineering falls under the TN Visa criteria under NAFTA rules. It’s really simple to get and costs the employer nothing and the application itself is done in an hour at the border and costs like $50
I am not a citizen yet. I only have PR and could get a H1b work visa in US ( Since I am moving from US when I had H1b). So my higher probability is working in windsor until I can become a citizen and take advantage of TN
Windsor's employment market has very little ability to absorb so many University graduates and educated new immigrants. Most of our work here are hands on , or require skills that cannot be taught in Universities. In fact, Canada has a serious problem of over education but low productivity. CBC has story on this problem

If you have a degree from Canada and you are a citizen then you should have lots of opportunities and if you can't find anything you can get a TN visa and work in the US which is honestly better. If you are a PR with a degree from another country then good luck to you because you are competing with literally 1000s of others with the exact same (lack of) credentials.
if you are professionally licensed in the US that is going to be recognized. I'm sure it depends on what state you got your degree in but in Ontario if you are a P.Eng that is solid gold
I am not sure how shops are running now but I worked in some large shops for about 10yrs and we did hire mechanical and electrical engineers for designing. But they would also use alot of experienced guys off the shop floor to go up to design to help out. As guys got older and wanted less physical work and also this way they could keep staffing numbers down a bit by moving guys off the floor and upstairs to do design then when it was ready to build they would go back down and help lead the crews.
Yes. If you have an ABET accreditated degree and five years XP, then can apply for and get a P. Eng. PEO may ask you to write the FE exam if you have not.
Note that engineering is provincially regulated in Canada.
Not as much as you would think. The qualifications for being called an engineer in Canada are much more stringent. Do you have your professional engineering cert?
Our shop down to 4 days a week.
Hard to quote against China.
Also some shops are outsourcing design and production to China then just putting their name on it and behind it.
Good luck.
Windsor is not at all an engineering city. There are few glamorous or prestigious jobs and certainly not many worth the pay, notably in mechanical and electrical.. which feels strange for the reasons you listed. Go to the states if you can, but don't bank on Windsor.
This took me by surprise when I moved here. I thought there were lots of engineers, mechanics, and general manufacturing people in the city that I would be able to hire/work with.
Nope. It's all in Michigan. Anything I need done or created, nobody in Windsor has the skills or desire to do so. It's kind of shocking seeing struggling shops turn away buissness because they just don't want to work more than minimal hours.
Not sure what kind of engineer you are, but the company i work at has a posting.

That OT engineer posting is a very specific skill set, PLC and automation experience, along with SQL and IT related skills. Basically looking for a unicorn.
You'll have to lower your salary expectations. There's several automation companies around who hire engineers but do not pay well. Look at the local Tier 1 companies also such as flex N gate.

Most of us work in the US.
I need sponsorship to work in the US which makes it tricky

Oh yeah you aren’t getting in then. Companies aren’t doing H1Bs at the moment
Yeah, this sucks. You'd get better luck in Waterloo

I am just wondering how many jobs the battery plant created for people here.
I am not sure of the number but I have been visiting their site regularly. I think they are still in very early stages to go on a full hiring spree
Currently 250 (approx) 900 (approx) by end of year 3,000 (approx) by full ramp up Local figures
Where are they usually hiring from ?
Their website Hiring started back in October 2023 and will continue over the next 2yrs as they ramp up
There are supposed to be about 650 new engineering jobs being created for the Stellantis battery research and development division.
I see a lot of engineers being pulled from detroit sister plants
In Brazil?

I have a degree from the US and 5 years of work experience from the US. Does Canada not acknowledge US experience as well ?

Or even Centerline. I applied there too but got hired on state side over 4 years ago.
I am just trying to get my foot in the door. I understand the pay is crap but at this point I am looking to get started somewhere
