Do not pass go

chewwydraper

We all did lol If you’re not experiencing vision problems you’re fine. The issues come when people stare, not glance. You’ve glanced at the sun before and lived to tell the tale.

is_reddit_useful

I guess the problem happens when only a small part of the sun is visible, and the discomfort that tells you staring at the sun is wrong is decreased because of that. Then some people could stare.

A_Triggered_Manater

You won't survive until morning... Call your loves ones... You'll be fine if it was just a glance my dumbass stared right at it after taking off my eclipse glasses😂

You have 24 hours left I'm sorry

Minute-District7407

Same me too

bob_bobington1234

I stared at it for 30-45 seconds at a time with shade 11 welding helmet. They recommend shade 12-14. I'm good

jessveraa

The hysteria around this whole thing has been hilarious. I've accidentally glanced at a welding arc more times than I can count in my 7 years as a welder and have always dodged arc flash. I used my welding helmet set to shade 13 to view it despite so many articles and "experts" saying only the glasses were safe. I know a thing or two about protecting your eyes against harmful UV rays and honestly, a second here or there of looking at the sun isn't the end of the world. Your eyes might feel a tad bit dry later tonight, you might have a headache, but you'll be fine. Don't do it again.

BrawlyBards

I swear I'm part moth. When I tried my hand as an apprentice I stared at that arc every fucking day. Like full passes, just locked in on that light. Never got the dreaded sandpaper eyes. There is no noticeable damage as far as I can tell. 32 now. Maybe it'll catch up with me eventually.

jessveraa

That's wild lmao you're just very lucky. I've known guys who got the 3am sandpaper eyes just from doing tack welding with their eyes closed. I can't imagine just raw dogging that arc lmaoooo

BrawlyBards

Oh, I know it. Pretty much every guy I worked with had experienced it at some point. I will clarify that I wasn't welding myself but standing off to the side. Tweaking temps and handing off rods/grinders. But I would be within 2 feet of the arc and just enthralled. That and molten slag from oxygen acetalyn cutting. Shiny sparky things. Love it.

Common_Technology

I found this picture in my son's phone. He was outside without proper glasses. He said he looked for few seconds. I am freaked out. https://preview.redd.it/o6f17o5hdbtc1.jpeg?width=954&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce6b1d69982591edfa3f2f663284d84f2b1d21c2

is_reddit_useful

Note how although the sun is uselessly overexposed, an internal reflection in the lens gives you a properly exposed picture of the sun below.

Common_Technology

He says he feels fine. Should I take him to the doctor.

I'm sorry but he's terminal.  Say your goodbyes while you have the chance...

zuuzuu

Probably not necessary. If he has any vision problems, then of course take him to his doctor. But glancing at it for a second or two won't do any permanent damage.

External_Key_3515

Are you serious? Omg...... They gave "parent of the year" to the wrong parent. Can't believe you even asked this.

zuuzuu

You'll be fine. See a doctor if you experience any vision problems, but if you do, know that they will likely be temporary.

Average_canad1an

Ok thanks for confirmation

ewigglewiggle

I also did, along with some others and some (including me) got dizzy, some have headaches, so I guess we will see what happens LOL
