Whitefish Bay in Milwaukee has a deep history of extravagant “key parties,” where couples put their car keys in a bowl and at the end the women pull a set of keys and that’s the man they go home with for the night. It’s wild.
I'm originally from Gilman (Taylor County), home of Gilman Cheese, the State's only true swinging bridge, and not much more. Fishing and hunting are probably the primary pass times. It's where the Northwoods meets the Dairyland parts of the state. When I lived there farming was a big part of the area, but has recently fallen off. Many farms are now defunct, or being bought up by Amish. There are a shocking number of Window factories in the area: Weathershield (Medford/Ladysmith), Sierra Pacific (formerly Hurd Windows, Medford), Anderson (Hudson), JeldWen (Hawkins, though recently announced its closure). The area is also the progenitor of Tombstone Pizza from Medford, WI and Colby Cheese from Colby, WI. Wisconsin Badgers legend and Baltimore Ravens Safety Jim Leonhard hails from Tony, WI.
I grew up on a dairy farm by Jump River. It's sad to see the smaller dairy farms going away. Lots of huntin' and fishin' left though and more "vacation cabins".
Same here. I worked a couple summers there right after the name change, and it was a bit weird to get used to it. Very little cheese that came out of there had the Drangles name attached, same for the Gilman Cheese name after. It was basically a contract oriented production company for larger brands when I was there.

Can confirm. Spooner does, in fact blow.
I love that there is a Spooner Blows bridge. I remember T-Bird country from when I was a kid and see that it’s moved to the parking lot of the minoqua high school.
One of my favorite high school football memories (bare with a "Glory Days" story here haha):
I was a Rice Lake Warrior. They got rid of both the Chief with full headdress and the Michigan Wolverine style helmets so they wouldn't get sued. Our mascot became a Star, of all things Warrior. My classmate's mom sewed together a star mascot costume. First round of the playoffs, we played Lakeland Thunderbirds. They had a mascot too. I remember getting elbowed by a teammate to look up in the stands. Here our Star was fighting the T-Bird. Amazing. I also remember getting rocks thrown at us by Superior fans because we kicked their ass too. Buncha shadow of Duluth people up there
I grew up in one of the other towns in Barron County. We always thought you Rice Lake people thought you were hot sh*t because you lived in a town with 8,000 people.
I can personally tell you that that "hot shit" attitude immediately ended when we arrived at whatever college/city we were in as soon as we turned 18. Anyone that stayed back and kept that attitude has a marinaded liver by now
The northern bit hosts the American Birkebeiner XC ski race ( the biggest in this hemisphere ) and is a mtn biking hotspot as well - much beloved by scads of outdoorsy types into that kind of thing.
Yeah, I was going to say it’s the gathering spot of the biggest groups of aerobically fit people the state sees all year. Yes I’m aware of the Ironman in Madison. Fight me.
They call it Rohan. Horsemen were given those lands long ago. They say rangers live out there and will return one day to end the Gerrymanderer before he finds the one true Ring of Power.
Until then, I’ve heard the Elves still keep peace in the County Dane, and in the Riverwest, east towards the great blue fresh sea.
It's SOOOOO big. And most of the shoreline is wild forest, contrasting from 99% of other lakes where they're infested with houses every 100 ft. Rent a pontoon boat and load up on gas and you could spend days exploring the whole system. There's tons of islands you can post up on and grill. Some of them you can camp on first come first serve, I did a few years back on pine island. There are wolves and bears in the area though so be safe
I grew up in this area and most of my family still lives there. Chippewa Falls is a lovely town, home of Leinies, but the true hidden gem is Irvine Park. It has a great Oktoberfest that brings entertainment that is not just drinking, like the Glockenspiel. Cadott hosts Rock Fest and Country Fest. A couple years ago we rented a cabin on a lake outside of Hayward. We’ve gone to numerous national parks, but this was one of our favorite family vacations. It was actually a vacation. Hearing the loons on the lake, seeing the deer in it while bald eagles flew by….it was really peaceful. There are plenty of racist assholes and drugs, but as someone who is up there pretty often, it’s easy enough to avoid.
If you drive North on Highway 13, then take 77 East at night, you may see an amazing display of wildlife. (This area is part of the Cheguamegon- Nicolet national forest.)
We saw two elk (they are big!), a red fox, turkeys, and white-tail deer.
Another time, a black bear ran in front of our vehicle at dusk. I thought it was a big black dog, then realized it was a black bear!
Also, there is a [Continental Divide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continental_divide_(disambiguation)) running through that area.
I like to explore the northwest portion of the area on my motorcycle. What I found is that there’s a little town every ten miles or so, it’s on a lake, with a row of shops along the lake that typically include an ice cream shop, a sandwich shop, an old school cafe, a local bar, and then something random, like a drive in restaurant or brewery. I think it’s bucolic and charming!
I live up at the top of that lovely turd shaped circle in a small town of Barnes Wi. I’m mostly stoned talking to the birds most days, chasing the goddamn bears out of my trash and the Mormons off my porch.
I drive through this area on trips between Madison and Duluth. The drive is beautiful, but be careful driving on highways in evening in early Fall. Deer all over the road. I remember hitting the brakes hundreds of feet away (starting from speed limit) and coming to an almost screeching halt a couple of feet in front of a doe that just stood there the whole time looking at me. Talk about deer in the headlights! That’s one of the things that happens in this general area.
Last weekend of July Glenwood City plays host to the most charming little Renaissance Faire you ever want to see. It’s called Ren in the Glen and is volunteer run. It’s a labor of love for everyone who is involved. It’s about 30 minutes north of Menominee, about an hour east of St Paul. Check it out! https://www.renintheglen.com/
Timm’s Hill is the highest point in the state.
Hayward has an annual ski festival.
Phillips has a concrete park with folk art that is one of the trippiest things I’ve ever seen.
Can’t tell if Marshfield is in that line but they host one of the three Wisconsin State Fairs and have the world’s largest round barn.
Hayward/Clam lake are known for Musky fishing and generally buetiful Forests. Also Clam lake used to be home to the ELF system, where they stuck rods down into stone and antenna above and could communicate with submarines out in the ocean, by way of vibration of some sort through the granite that extended to the ocean.
Highest point in WI is Timm’s Hill.
There is national forest up there, so camping, hiking, etc.
The Birkebeiner cross country ski race is in Hayward.
There is a giant muskellunge statue in Hayward.
Lots of fishing and boating.
The drive from Madison to Superior requires highway 53, which is interminable, and makes me glad I don’t have to do that anymore.
The Cable / Hayward area hosts the Berkiebiner ski race, which is a big deal in cross country skiing. It’s also home to some rad mountain bike trails. It hosts a big race called the Cheq 40 and also the Fatbike birkie every year. Nationally known region for mountain biking and is a historical birthplace of mountain biking in Wisconsin.
Great cheeses are made there. There is the rockfest music festival in Chippewa falls. Tours of the Leinenkugals brewery in Chippewa falls. Lots of nature trails there.
Grew up in the Hayward-Minong area, basically the adults work, hunt and fish, and drink beer. The teenagers get into trouble, hunt and fish, and drink beer (at least from my experience)
Beautiful backroads to get lost on forests and woods throughout - random lakes to come across - always a waterfall or two to go see. That’s big circle you’ve drawn. If you’re into canoeing, hiking, camping, motorcycle riding, country drives or about any other outdoor activity, there’s some incredible spaces to take in.
Take a look at the aerial imagery to answer this question. Most of what you circled was at the bottom of glacial lakes towards the end of the last glaciation.
The southern half is very sandy and wasn’t conducive to farming. The northern half is very marshy and wasn’t conducive to farming. Therefore, it’s a low population area with a lot of failed farms and trees.
Americans did try to farm the sand and the swamps for a hundred years, but these are mostly failed farms now, being sold to the Amish.
Everyone who said meth and fishing is correct, and there are underlying geological and historical reasons that led to that.
This encompasses an area called “The Blue Diamond” it is loaded with lakes, therefore, cabins and resorts. It might be different for people that live there year round and not on a lake, but it is a vacation hot spot for the rich.
Nothing much 😂 some decent sized towns up to a couple thousand, but mostly people who wanna be away from people. Lots of hunting. Quite a few farms. And god knows what else 👁️👄👁️
Edit: totally forgot about meth and crack and heroin. Not sure what’s the preferred one, but I know it’s there!
A whole Lotta Amish - horse and buggies - in the Southern half. Just went to a store near Athens today, but debated about going to one in Spencer - there are options!
On top of the Birkiebeiner XC ski race from cable to Hayward, here are the top few things from my experience growing up near the area:
Chippewa Flowage - great for being on a motorboat, fishing and camping. Very large area to explore via water with lots of wilderness.
Marieke Gouda - Thorp based cheese factory known for international award winning cheeses.
Namekagon National Scenic River Way - a seriously underrated canoeing river full of first come first serve camping. Popular to start in Trego.
Rock Fest/Country Fest - large music festivals based in Cadott.
Stanley Tractor Pull - one of the largest in the area to my knowledge North of Tomah
And if you count Chippewa Falls, Leinie's of course; but the museum of Industry and Technology is very cool and documents the development of the first supercomputers in the world right in CF at Cray Research.
I live in Marshfield now, and I'd never heard of Marshfield until I got a call about a job up here. The only thing that happens up here is drinkin' Busch Lite and watching NASCAR. Seriously...
Also, pride in having the "World's Largest Round Barn"
You can start the ice age trail up there
[https://iceagetrail.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5ff8f517b1e34d46bb70ed21b36286c6](https://iceagetrail.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=5ff8f517b1e34d46bb70ed21b36286c6)
Farms, poor people house fires that nearly burn down towns, meth, weed, drunk driving, drunk shootings, hunting, driving through to get somewhere else. A good deal of inbreeding too.
Did I mention meth yet? Cause lots of meth.
Close to Medford, you have ice age trail segments in the national forest. Very nice backpacking + dispersed camping, but wait until the bugs die down at the end of summer.
You also have the Naekagon River. Have an outfitter take you upstream with your kayak and gear, paddle down to your car, camp at least 2-3 nights on the established primitive camp sites.
Mushroom farms and swingers.
If you add meth, this is the correct answer.
Came here to say meth
And racism.
Can confirm…. I’m a mushroom farmer 😁 ❤️🍄🤟
Well shit hello new friend lol
I’ll meet you by Rhinelander with UP goodies to trade 😂
Where are the swingers?
Whitefish Bay in Milwaukee has a deep history of extravagant “key parties,” where couples put their car keys in a bowl and at the end the women pull a set of keys and that’s the man they go home with for the night. It’s wild.
Those parties are probably gross
Actually you’d be surprised they’re pretty clean. If there’s meth at those parties I never see it.
Dudes name kind of checks out.
Prolly drinkin' a couple two, tree beers.
Maybe look for a tirty point buck

Fishing and meat raffles and eating cheese and drinking beer
I'm at a meat raffle right now!
Lol yep, I was too tonight! Last one of the season
Wtf is a meat raffle?
A literal raffle of meat.
Euphemism for all-male gangbang.
Everyone buys tickets to win a couple frozen turkeys or a bunch of beef
Oh yah? What dey got on da board dis week?
Cool! I gotta get up there!
Awe, you just missed it. Our raffle was last Saturday! Next year remind me earlier and I’ll get you hooked up.
!remindme [11 months] Dang it. Screwed up the reminder. Guess I'll probably forget about it and be stuck with local meat raffles
Drink, fish, and f*ck. And in the winter, you don't fish quite as much.
Lies! I fish more in the winter. Ice fishing is my jam
That is almost like saying cheese eating and beer drinking

Cabins and pull tabs at the bars. Edit: Also, Spooner blows.
The correct answer
I know you’ve been here! Lol. The other side says Hayward Sucks.
There’s pull tabs at bars everywhere in the state. And gas stations, grocery stores… you name it…

I love going up to Spooner every year... :(
It’s a lovely area!
Hayward sucks
See my comment in this thread about Cable/ Hayward. It’s a pretty cool area.

Oh, I understand. Spent many a childhood days on the Chippewa Flowage. Some of my finest memories. We talkin bout a bridge here tho
The northern bit hosts the American Birkebeiner XC ski race ( the biggest in this hemisphere ) and is a mtn biking hotspot as well - much beloved by scads of outdoorsy types into that kind of thing.
And the Lumberjack World Championship!
Clearly we're all just from Hayward and Cable at this point, I myself am from Hayward
Yeah, I was going to say it’s the gathering spot of the biggest groups of aerobically fit people the state sees all year. Yes I’m aware of the Ironman in Madison. Fight me.
You're probably right.

LMAO I WAS THINKING THAT AS I READ IT! You nailed it, buddy.
Territory secretly controlled by the cult of Xanthagar god of blood and harvest.
Bro just gonna out xanthagar like that
He won't do that again. Xanthagar will eat his soul tonight.
Good thing I'm just outside that territory. It's mostly just casinos and new kwiktrips.
The Chippewa flowage is basically the Grand canyon of Wisconsin. At least, that's what I'm trying to get people to start calling it 😅
Thank you! I'm now very intrigued for a summer road trip!
It's SOOOOO big. And most of the shoreline is wild forest, contrasting from 99% of other lakes where they're infested with houses every 100 ft. same thing as the Turle-Flambeau flowage overthere by Park Falls.
Camping and fishing
Sounds awesome!!
It’s not, the area is horrible. We hate it. Don’t go there, you’d hate it too. Take our word for it. Stay in the south.
Awesome until you want to go camping and you're from out of town and the bait shop refuses you service because they don't know you 🙃
Also, make sure you're white.
Oh I was white, but I was with a girlfriend who had colored hair so I think they thought we were lesbians and therefore would not serve us.
WWJD, amirite. Rural Midwest, will never understand it, and I grew up here.
Yeah I was born here but never feel welcome lol
Same. :(
Rock fest, country fest, aquafest, the birkie, dirt roads on the way to where you're going, loon calls.
Woo hoo cadott 🫣
I have a little place dead center of your circle. Hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling, drinking.
Drinking?!?! In Wisconsin?!?!
I thought this was a dry state? Next thing you'll tell me there is gambling in this establishment.
There's gambling-
Same here only a lot of farming too!!
A someone who lives there, not much. It's nice.

Cell phone service disappears lol
White people. Lots of em.
Lots of side-by-side trails from bar to bar in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.
Farms, poor people house fires that nearly burn down towns, meth, weed, drunk driving, drunk shootings, hunting, driving through to get somewhere else. A good deal of inbreeding too. Did I mention meth yet? Cause lots of meth.
Meat raffles, gun raffles, long drives to the grocery store, and towns full of t-shirt stores that are all the same.
Drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, drunk driving oh more drugs, deer camp.
Banjo music.
