Poor guy. That war was so devastating, particularly for the Soviet Union, that it’s hard to see the real human affect. Photos like this do a good job of grounding the effects of the war.

Sorry. Holocaust, not ww2. A simple search though would clear that up.
What's the story behind the photographs? My guess is that they were part of a media piece intended to boost morale? It would have been extraordinary for a visit home by a Red Army sargeant to be accompanied by a photographer.
Yeah most likely. Seems like his home village was close to the front in the summer of 43. Looks like a propaganda photo op to show the newly liberated territory using a "son of the soil"

You know, a lot of folks in the West (America particularly) downplay the Soviet contribution to WW2. I've always wondered if this is/was due to the cold war struggle that followed, the impression that the USSR was technologically "backwards" at the time and they would "never have made it without our leadership", or just basic ignorance.
When you really read the history, though, you start to understand the sheer scale and impact of the war on the Eastern front. This sort of last meeting happened over 8.5 million times. 26 million times if you count civilian casualties (including almost 9 million children) - and that's just the Soviet side. The numbers are just staggering and should never be forgotten.
This is an example of the vilification of the red army and russophobia perpetuated by the current conflict in ukraine. Seems like OP is polish. Perhaps he would prefer his ancestors remained under nazi occupation.
Nah they are Polish, its understandable that they are pissed at how Russia "liberated" Poland and other countries, though calling every Soviet soldier rapist is cringe, especially when the soldier in particular couldnt have been involved in raping anyone in Germany or Eastern Europe
OP forgot that 27 million Russians ate German bullets to liberate Eastern Europe. OP also expects geopolitics to work like fights in the schoolyard. I hope OP understands that Soviet armies were waiting to move against Czechoslovakia when Poland refused safe passage through their territory. In fact, the Polish government collaborated with the Germans and took parts of Czech territory during the crisis of 1938. If the Poles had allowed Soviet forces through their country during this crisis, it is likely the Second World War in the West never happens.

It's absurd the degree to which you have to go to [point out](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/18oq0yg/is_it_true_that_stalin_was_forced_to_enter_into_a/kejouay/?context=3) established sources when contradicting any element of the received (& self-congratulatory) narrative in the West to even avoid getting the kind of response you got & I sympathize with you for your efforts.
I strive to be an unbiased student of the subject, open to new views and opinion. I am in the final year of my undergraduate studies and understand the fact that my relative youth might cause me to inadvertently include bias into my judgement. That being said, having any sort of constructive discourse on this shitty platform is nearly impossible. Most people turn to insults before they provide me with material that can actually change my judgement
The Nazis' sex crimes in Eastern Poland/Belarus were worse. They were Heer policy. The Heer kept sex slaves just like the Japanese. I guess those weren't Polish enough for him.
Like the old statistic says 80% of Soviet Males born in 1923 did not survive World War II.
God that’s awful rip
Poor guy. That war was so devastating, particularly for the Soviet Union, that it’s hard to see the real human affect. Photos like this do a good job of grounding the effects of the war.
And yet, some believe it never happened
Huh?
There was a study not long ago, some ppl don't believe the holocaust happened.
Oh, the Holocaust. Thought you were talking about WW2 as this photo is about that.
Ww2 included.
...people believe ww2 didn't happen?
https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4349815-poll-americans-holocaust-myth/amp/ Sorry. It was the holocaust ppl think was a myth
That’s not true lmao
https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4349815-poll-americans-holocaust-myth/amp/ Sorry. Holocaust, not ww2. A simple search though would clear that up.
Yes, you accurately searching could have easily cleared that up. Everyone here was well aware of Holocaust denial.
So sad, brave man.
My son is about the boy’s age. I looked at these photos for a few minutes and cried
It's a girl, Alexandra. Short haircut, probably for hygienic reasons. She died of typhus during the war.
😢
Brav soldat

Completely on the side, but I notice in picture three and four Trifonov wearing Wehrmacht issue socks. Soviet issue were foot cloths.

You just shared a comment asking the same question lol. I think you linked the wrong one.

This is some straight out of Kremlin history bullshit.
I formed this opinion after reading the work of William L shirer
