[https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Publications/tenantlandlord.pdf](https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Publications/tenantlandlord.pdf) This is a plain-English guide, produced by the Michigan Legislature, that outlines the rights, responsibilities, and resolutions for both tenants and landlords.

That is a great resource for all Michigan renters! However it doesn't actually explain what to do if your apartment isn't ready on the date agreed to in your lease. OP maybe ask r/legaladvice about this specific issue. Or for the most reliable response, it may be worth a 30 minute call to a contract or renter's rights attorney. Did you already sign the lease with the agreed upon move in date as 5/31?

We did not sign the lease yet- they were having us do that the day of move in. I guess now I see why. 🤦‍♀️

Ooh bummer, yeah that might be a different situation. Scummy landlord move on their part!

If you didn’t sign a lease you have no rights or responsibility either so you can walk. Did you give them any money? They can’t take a deposit from you if they didn’t give you a lease technically. Tell your current landlord you are in an emergency situation and need more time

We did give them an application fee and holding fee for the apartment. The office said they’d give us a full refund but yeah, we’re never going back. Our current place was sooo cool about this whole thing and extended our lease another month. They also said they cringed when they saw where we were moving to 🥴 now we know I guess!

unixgeek

Sounds like your current folks are cool. Considering staying there another year?

Ok-Antelope-9278

Yes they are! Red Lion is sooo underrated. We love them but we had a personal dilemma that led us not to renew our lease by the deadline. They unfortunately are sold out now, and we need more space. Our apartment is spoken for come 8/1 and they need most of July to tidy up and such, or else we’d definitely consider it.

BubbleTeaRainyDay

Where were you gonna move to?

Ok-Antelope-9278

Arbor One!

If you already signed a lease that has an occupation date on it, aka move in date, they legally have to ensure that you have housing. They should be paying for a hotel if they can't hold up their end of their own contract.

Ok_Bodybuilder_155

Where were you trying to move to? It would be better to let folks know who pulled this stunt on you, so as to prevent this for other folks in the future.

It was Arbor One! AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE! We had issues from the start. Just to put this all out there for others: They barely answer the phone so we had to go in person several times throughout the process to get an answer out of them. They told us we could get a three bedroom and that they’d waive the income requirement because we are students, then the next visit were told by the same person “no, that’s not possible”. We were told we could only get a two bedroom (the whole point of us wanting to go there was for a three bedroom as we want more space, but after being assured we could get in we stopped our search. Then upon being told no, it was too late to go anywhere else). So we put a holding payment on the two bedroom apartment to secure it, then next time we went in they tried to say that we hadn’t paid until we said we had proof and then they magically found the receipt. This was on 5/10 and we finally got paperwork and our move in instructions & date. Then this most recent time we were told there was not enough maintenance workers to flip our apartment in time for move-in. They called my husband earlier to tell us but he didn’t answer, and they didn’t even try my phone. They were calling us on 5/28 to say that our 5/31 move-in apartment wasn’t ready and they only tried once to reach us.

From personal experience, you dodged a bullet big time. Arbor One is the worst of the worst. Good luck to you in your search!

All of this being said- anyone know of 3 bedroom apartments at $1500ish or less? I know it’s a tall order but we’d be ever grateful for any leads 🙏 or if there are any places around here you know are solid, even if no availability, it’d be good to know for the future!

Lake Shore is kind of known as the top tier apartment complex in Ypsilanti. Unfortunately it has about a 6 month waitlist, but that’s where you’d want to try to get into
