And they came Americans and for them "White" meant Germanic. Poles and Italians were not considered White, they were even viewed as worse than Black by KKK, because Black person is easier to spot than a Pole or a Italian which may try to hide and live among "White"people.
"Scientific racism" was mostly about facial features not skin colour. Later Americans just spread their interpretation of "White" due to mass media. Basically for Americans "White" meant what this illustration describes as "Nordic race". Later Americans adopted "Caucasian" as synonym for "White", but originally Caucasian had much more broad meaning.

I don't think it was that accurate even at the time. Aborigines are not closely related to Africans. The Ethiopians are in that group for cultural reasons.

* Australoid
And Ethiopians were considered Caucasoid due to "European" face features, not skin colour.
