Blue and white come from Count Henry of Burgundy, The father of our first King Don Afonso Henriques. For all the reasons possible blue and white are the real colours of Portugal. Green and Red are the colours of a political system.
Ah, yeah, it can be confusing, the English language is sometimes so simple that it can confuse people if they lack the context, but that's also what makes English so easy to learn and is one of the reasons English is spoken around the world.

Made this, itās my proposal brothers, what do you think?
I like it. But I don't think the olive leaves are necessary and I usually don't like flags with inscriptions... and remember we have 2 official languages :)
No no, it's not weird at all because the little dots (quinas) are said to represent the right of self coinage. So basically have your own currency. In medieval times that was seen as a significant factor for sovereignty. It's because of factors like this right that the pope eventually acknowledged portuguese independent statehood.
Sooooo it does make sense that the sp\*nish prefer the flag that doesn't boast about our freedom from them ehehe suck on those coins you paella eating bastards ehehehe
(PS: the coins have also been connected to the nails on Jesus' cross so it's actually unclear what the original meaning for them was; the biggest argument for the coin thing is the amount of dots existent in the 2nd ish iteration of the finnish flag, see below)
https://preview.redd.it/0s3rm5sj7s7d1.png?width=240&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4da5518c54ce7d34740ecf8606a2de9a4aa3a6cc
The most likely origin story for it all might have been related to the king's shield. Back then, country flags would come from the king's shield design, almost certainly that Afonso Henriques shield was white with a blue leather cross nailed to it, with usage, the paint on the nail's heads would get worn off and return to silver, which would explain the "coins" on the flag, later, the leather would start to wear and eventually rip and fall, except for the parts that were nailed down, which explains why the blue shields that later appeared on the flag followed the direction pointed by the nails
Imo, they could have just switched the monarchist symbols with the Armillary Spherebehind the Shield, but keep the overall design and colours... and the symmetry
The novel flag is a disgrace. It breaks all the rules of heraldry, has got no sense of proportion, and literally commits a crime by stealing the King's coat of arms.
Even the designer knew that the colours were mismatched so he gave instructions to use lighter shades of red and green so that it wouldn't be so blatant.

Strongly disagree, Hino da Carta is way more gloriously especially the musical intermezzoās between the stanzaās.
A Portuguesa gives me chills. It truly glorifies our history, contrary to Hino da Carta which barely mentions it. And also, A Portuguesa appeals to the union of the people and has this belic tone whichs sounds extremely patriotic.
I know Hino da Carta as well. I like it, but A Portuguesa is quite something else. Literal chills, especially when sung as a group.
Hino da carta is just proclaiming the the new constitution at the time and calling the king for how great he is - there is no depth and no special meaning behind it and its nothing more than a melodic song not that bad to hear
A Portuguesa is by far more simbolizing of what Portugal is and was, has real depth to its lyrics and above all gives goosebumps and works up anyone who sings it or hears and understands it
I completely disagree with the anthem. The current one is to me the best anthem of them all. No other match the emotion of singing in both because of the epic words but also because of the awsome melody.

The blue and white seems more "portuguese". The red and green reminds me of a random african nation. If you want to get rid of monarchic symbols just change the shield by your current one, as we did in 1873.
I love the astrolabe, though. It's symbolism is something uniquely important to Portugal because while most countries base their identities on revolution, conquest, struggle, etc., Portugal bases a lot of its identity on exploration. Same with Spain's "PLVS VLTRA" on its flag.

But thatās not funny like calling us Portuguese Western Balkan. We can be African Dwellers or something, that would be funny.

I stand corrected.
True that...
Especially with a bit of red.
They come from the freemason part of the republican party to be more specific
Blue and white come from Count Henry of Burgundy, The father of our first King Don Afonso Henriques. For all the reasons possible blue and white are the real colours of Portugal. Green and Red are the colours of a political system.
Agreed, Blue and White are our national colours, despite them being disregarded in some other historical flags
The white and blue are also Portugalās classic colours, the red and green are from a republican party that influenced the revolution
Switch the Ghana Green for Jamaika Green
Exactly what they are
So it is appropriate. We get what we fucking deserve!
Of course you would say that as our first King was half French and blue and white came from his father, Count Henry de Bourgogne.

The blue and white seems more "portuguese". The red and green reminds me of a random african nation. If you want to get rid of monarchic symbols just change the shield by your current one, as we did in 1873.
How do you think Afrinca Nations got this idea and custom?
Damn you had something nice going on
I love the current flag tbh! But my fave is the Reino Unido de Portugal, Algarves e Brasil!
why the castles from Castilla?
They symbolise 7 dead moor kings
Nice! didn't know.
Who doesn't like dead moors?
That's only legend... Truth is, it's Castilian castles because our kings wanted the Castilian throne too!
Or we were 7 times better than Castille
Castleā Castile, idk why the Castilians made their symbol a building lmao
Maybe because the region was full of castles? That's where the name comes from
I love the astrolabe, though. It's symbolism is something uniquely important to Portugal because while most countries base their identities on revolution, conquest, struggle, etc., Portugal bases a lot of its identity on exploration. Same with Spain's "PLVS VLTRA" on its flag.
It's an Armilary Sphere, but yes, I'm also a fan of it. I'd replace the crown on the Shield with the Sphere behind it.
It's the armillary sphere, an astronomy instrument used in navigation. It isn't the astrolabe.

Agreed.
I hate 1910
I'm going against the flow here, and say that I like the red and green one more. Especially when darker hues are used, like [this](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ad/Flag_of_Portugal_%28alternate%29.svg/2560px-Flag_of_Portugal_%28alternate%29.svg.png).

the former one was way better. Only problem it had was the crown and the cross on it, just replace theses by something symmetrical and stylised in the same colour as the rest without having any relation ,with monarchy or religion and you're golden, beautiful flag. The change of colour is honestly a shame.
Some people propose the former flag with the Armillary Sphere behind the Shield instead of the crown on it.
I'm not a huge fan of the sphere, but getting back the former colour would already be a big upgrade imo.
Yeah, green and red were the colours of the former Republican Party, it was a purely political decision
No. We want the cross and the crown. To hell with heretics.
But you no longer have the crown and the cross anyway.
"The woke left took our crown!"
And they will take the armilar sphere and the wounds of christ too if we let them.
I like more the new, it's more unique and with more personality. Not many flags with green, and less that combine it with red. And blue-white is one of the most standard/boring flag combinations.
>And blue-white is one of the most standard/boring flag combinations Or maybe one of those which actually go well together
I'm with you. Blue and white is just whatever, really. Too minimalist and blue is just a passive color that doesn't appeal my eyes
It would have looked good with blue and red, and without that huge ass crown
Yup, with the Sphere
True, biggest issue is that no child can draw our flag
Is the gold behind the shield meant to be a globe or something
It's the armillary sphere, an astronomy instrument used in navigation. https://pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esfera_armilar

Crown is always a downgrade in my eyes. Monarchies are a bizarre anachronism that deserves to be snuffed out.
I agree. The Republican Pioneer Oliver Cromwell was truly the greatest statesman in British history.
Also extremely wholesome and democratic
Cope car bomber
Some advanced countries are monarchies, I don't think too much about it. They could have just removed the crown or replace it with an Armillary Sphere behind the Shield though.
Yep, sounds Irish enough
New one is better
Current flag is pretty ugly but that blue one symbolizes a very weak country (1830-1910). There are older flags that carry more symbolism.
The older ones don't look very much like proper flags but rather like standards
I meant any of the white ones with the shield in the center. Those would be flags to be proud of.
Like the one of Portugal, Brasil e Algarves? Ok, that's also a nice one. But I think it's a bit too white, aka too empty
