Obviously this year he's gotten some more praise because he's getting a bit more outside ball, but I've long held he's been heavily underrated (and still is).
Tackles, pressure acts, shepards. All things that aren't sexy, don't earn you a disposal but are instrumental to winning games. I think Matt Rowell is the best in the AFL at all these things.
Media critiques of Rowell critiquing him for not getting easy ball and kicking more goals is ridiculous, considering the inside work he does is the hardest in the comp.
They basically are saying because he doesn’t have the attributes that would make him the best player ever, he isn’t up to standard.
They want every midfielder to be Bont, at times, which is silly.
Midfield composition is important these days. Having a running, goal kicking mid is great, but they'll be even better if they're alongside a Rowell who can get in and under at stoppages. Specialisation is working well for the Sun's midfield.
I think his first 2 years (or 1 year?) showed he does have those attributes. He was regularly getting 25+ disposals and kicking goals. He's just needed as a midfield bull because he's that fucking good at it and they've got Anderson in full flight now.
Rowelly is up there as one of my favourite players to watch because I love how he just gets shit done and is always working at 110%. He's an absolute chad, but only serious football watchers, teammates, and coaches notice the crazy grunt work he does.
His first 4 games he was kicking goals, then he got injured
But excluding that he has never been averaging more disposals and goals until this year. He got 25+ 4 times in his first 3 seasons (39 games). He's done that 5 times already this year from 10 games.
The injury game throws his averages out for the first year because it is such a small sample size, but even if you take that game out he's averaging more disposals this year
Won't be the next intended but will push his way into the leadership group soon enough and if he continues to be this influential might quickly be the popular choice.
He loves the club, has the talent, has the drive and is popular within the walls. Yes there are a few others that do fit that mark in the club as well (it's taken nearly 15 years to really get there) but he's a good a choice as any of those above - potentially a better choice in the next 3-4 years considering he's only 22 years old.
I dont love the idea that every good player is automatically in the leadership.
Some players arent natural leaders, they are just good players. Leave them at that imo, and get your players who can really lead as Captain.
Well in this case thats fair enough then. Its just a pattern i see, people are already calling for Reid to be captain lol.
Just let good players play sometimes
Look at Gary Ablett. Was he a good leader just because he won a lot of contested ball? Hell no, leadership is mostly off the field, captains are mostly deputised by the coach these days to instill the standards the coach wants.
Anderson is a whole 4 months older than Rowell, it just seems odd to think he will be the next captain when the club and players have basically already appointed an heir
If he was at a bigger club, he'd have blown right up. It's like North's guns, they always get slept on compared to their quality, versus players at say Essendon or the Eagles, let alone Carlton/Collingwood.
They wanna drop Gold Coast and start playing TIO as much as possible, that’s how ya get a NT team. The Cats were nothing more than a short lunch break for these people last night, it was demoralising, apart from I really loved watching the Suns play.
It's completely irrelevant. You can't compare from this era where it's just basically 36 midfielders in a fast paced match, to the older eras. Of course players are going to reach numbers quicker
It's like trying to figure out why there's no dunstalls or locketts now
Is it irrelevant even if you're only functionally comparing him to other modern players?
They didn't even record tackles until 1987, so I'm not really sure what you're sooking about.
All that grass has finally paid off

Matt Cowell.
Adelaide Coast Bulls?
Kinda rate this jumper tbh

He’s got a lot of old Michael Voss about him - absolute brute on the ball He’ll be captain soon enough and probably win them a flag on his own
Considering Noah Anderson is in the leadership group alongside Witts, Miller and Collins, I somehow doubt Rowell is the next intended captain
Won't be the next intended but will push his way into the leadership group soon enough and if he continues to be this influential might quickly be the popular choice. Rowell oozes leadership though - he's a proper student of the game. He'll be a coach when he retires.

Rowell has essentially missed a whole season worth of games played compared to Noah from injury (90 games vs 72)
Well said, saw Voss in his prime, both absolute bulls
And he plays with 4 quarters of ferocity. Never backs down
He’s a beaut.
Anybody who watched his first season admittedly cut short to 5 games.
If he was at a bigger club, he'd have blown right up. It's like North's guns, they always get slept on compared to their quality, versus players at say Essendon or the Eagles, let alone Carlton/Collingwood.
First picked every week
The grass is always greener on the Rowell side
Can we get them ranked?

Thanks Lingy
😂😂😂😂
I hope that took a long time
I just wanna know who consumes more grass, Rowell or Dimma?
No chance this is true. As a random example, Cyril Rioli is much faster
nice
Absolute beast of a player
I want to see a video compilation of all 500 tackles and a 40 page spread in the paper ranking each one with a brief description.
I want to see Boss Baby Rowell on the back page of every newspaper
If only he played for Collingwood
We’d have him, if he’d come
We don't play on enough grounds. Not enough palate diversity for him
That is a nice thought 🙂
Cal Twomey is already working on it
500 times second to the ball. Plodder /s for obvious reasons
😂😂😂
Fastest player? Never seen him win a half time sprint, can’t be that fast
Rank his top 50 tackles or gtfo
They wanna drop Gold Coast and start playing TIO as much as possible, that’s how ya get a NT team. The Cats were nothing more than a short lunch break for these people last night, it was demoralising, apart from I really loved watching the Suns play.
Mayor of Darwin.
Crazy to think he missed a chunk with injury too, or would've been even faster
Im thinking it might be done by games played.
Would think it’s obvious.. but they did leave it off the graphic so who knows 😂
Ahh yeah. Probably is. Didn't think of that.... Good thing the graphic is clear about that...
A machine
You know what, we have had a chat lately about celebrating more things. How about a most tackles award, like a reverse Coleman?
Easy to get 500 tackles when you're the fastest AFL player ever.
He loves showing players how delicious grass is
Looking forward to celebrating his 10,000th tackle
The hunter.
Didn’t realise he was that quick - is he faster than wojay, he had 500 tackles didn’t he?
How fast is he?
I need to see a Daicos level ranking of his first 50 tackles otherwise I refuse to believe it.
The literal GOAT
lock him in for the Rowellow!
That’s a lot of times been second to the ball
Wow please give me more stat's I don't care about! Thanks BT

Exactly. Ironically, an irrelevant comment from custard arse
