Absolutely not. 119 is a beautiful number. It's imperfection is what makes it so perfect. 120 is round, even, neat, could mean a lot of things. 119 is unique.
I also love that it's 1 point under 20 goals. Which must really annoy them when people say they lost by 20 goals because they didn't, but they know that if they say it wasn't 20 goals they'll just get laughed at even harder.
I don't care about 2015 enough especially because of 2018. I'll give St Kilda either 09 or 2010, and I am saying this despite me still being pissed off over last nights game.
Had Saints beaten Pies in 2010 they wouldn't be at 16 now. So St Kilda winning in 2010 helps us as much as changing any result in the last 30 years for Carlton save for the 99 grand final but beating Essendon in the prelim was our grand final. There's nothing controversial about the 99 grand final either - beaten by the best team on the day.
Congrats Saints. You beat Collingwood.
Yep. This. As a Carlton supporter no GF I’ve seen has left me as gutted as that replay.
While we’re on it: if you ever want to be blown away, watch the draw. And just watch Hayes all day. I have never seen a player work harder.
I think, while obviously the manner of it was less than pleasant, most Swans fans would agree that we reached that GF ahead of time and Geelong was by a distance the best team that year, so there's no real sense that we "missed" an opportunity (aside from the possibility that something wild could have happened on the day).
Nobody was beating that 2022 Geelong team. They wanted it more, deserved the win. The Bulldogs got a stack of hell through the entire finals series, and the swans were the best team through the season. Felt like a genuine robbery.
2022 was deserved by the cats. Hawks were great in 2014. It sucked to lose both, but it's fine, you lose to the better team on the day. 2016 will never not sting because it didn't feel like that.
Geelong were the best team in footy in 2022 and they flogged us from siren to siren. Hard to dream about what could’ve been when in hindsight it never really on the cards.
2016 however we were the best team, and the Grand Final itself was definitely gettable. We came out flat but Joey Kennedy kept us in it on his own in the first half. We should’ve bowled you over after HT, just a completely wasted opportunity to win another premiership. Also the disrespect in the media and the one sided umpiring made it even more of a sour loss.
I wanted Richmond to win that so bad, I go for West Coast and my brother for Richmond and would have both went to the gf the week after in alas., I'll take the win over Collingwood.
Big theory I've heard from some pockets of Collingwood fans that if we win 2018, Bucks gets more of a chance and we miss out on Fly which would have completely changed our current situation
2011 grand final. Worst case scenario we become a team that won back to back flags. Potentially it changes the whole Malthouse-Buckley changeover and who knows? Maybe Malthouse coaches on and we get a dynasty, or maybe he steps into the head of coaching role like originally planned and we have more success than Buckley had initially. Big what-if for Collingwood.
That what if impacts way more than Collingwood. It's a genuine league wide what if. If as you suggest Malthouse may have stayed then the last decade for Carlton. It then impacts GWS (the club may not have called on SOS to save it from the Malthouse debacle), Adelaide and Geelong (Betts and Tuohy have always said they would have stayed had we put a genuine offer for both), etc.
Also for Geelong for years when fans and the media criticized Scott for regularly falling short in finals the club was able to point to that grand final. Would he still be coaching them had he not won that grand final? Did he coach as many games as Ken has before winning the 2022 grand final? I believe Ken holds the record for coaching longevity without a premiership.
So many things hinge on that one result.
That game hurt as a neutral. I remember this sub was slanted towards cheering Port and most were pissed off for a while after that game. A few dubious calls went Hawthorn's way in the second half and your goal kicking let you down .
2015 prelim Hawks v Freo. To have the western derby in a GF would have been incredible. But my heart might have also given out from the stress of playing freo. Those derbies between 2013-2015 were always very intense and even though they weren't always close scoring affairs, were some great games to watch
There would also be a genuine conversation on moving the grand final from the MCG, as having two clubs from the same state/city have to go to the MCG to play the Grand Final seems ridiculous. I'm sure the WA government would have paid out the AFL/MCG whatever revenue they would have lost by moving the GF to Subi
Port win the 2020 prelim. As much as I would love to have that ‘07 GF erased from existence, it still hurts knowing we were a kick away from a grand final I genuinely think we would’ve won.
That one stung I thought if we win that game the grannie if Richmond hadn't been our opposition we would of been every chance FUCK YOUR RICHMOND #PREMISHIPSTEALERS #PORT2020
Clearly Carlton were the biggest winner of that prelim but rhe biggest loser in '99 was arguably the AFL fan. I sincerely believe had Essendon gotten through the grand final would be a classic (so many good Essendon Vs North games from that era) but you also turned the loss into the motivation to absolutely tell the competition to "get rekt" the following year.
That's one heck of hypothetical - do the Don's dominate the following season and a half in the same way without the pain of that prelim loss? Do they get over North in 99, and do they make it a double?
Collingwood were the better team on grand final day, but I thought GWS were the better team during the prelim. It would have been a very interesting grand final, that's for sure.
My initial thought was 2005 Grand Final, but then on reflection, one premiership each over 05-06 was fair.
I’ll say 2015 Grand Final. We dominated Hawthorn in the qualifying final, and if the grand final hadn’t been held in Melbourne I think we’d have beaten them again.
Agree with you there. As much as consecutive flags would have been nice it makes me content that we both got one each. Both teams deserved a flag and what a great story it was.
I wonder what would have happened if we won. Probably no camp or not the same if there was. Would there still have been a drop in 2018 or would we have continued to contend? No rebuild? The GF loss really did trigger everything that came after. Better to finish 3rd than lose a GF
Can you imagine the pubs in WA for a derby GF??
Police would have one hell of a day
And the losing teams supporters one hell of a rest of their life talking footy
2020 prelim, would have loved to see what we could do in a granny at home
Of the GF losses, as much as I would have loved to be at a win last year, 04 to get four in a row would have been pretty special
1997 preliminary final against Adelaide. We would have made our first grand final in 30 odd years and had a real chance against St Kilda.
That late 90s dogs team had so many stars from my perspective. They deserved that chance.
Involving Collingwood you’d probably think 2018 but personally I wouldn’t, we win that and we deprive ourselves of McRae, 2023 and probably the best culture collingwood has ever had. So I’d probably go 2007 prelim with what would have waited for us the next week I think we win. Not involving the pies idk maybe 2019 grand final, seeing GWS win their first flag would have been fun to see
Libbas point late in the '97 prelim gets called a goal. Reckon we would have beat the saints the next week, but either way how cool would a dogs vs saints gf have been in '97? Us trying to break a 43 year drought, the saints a 31 year drought.
222-65 lives rent free in my head forever. Was at the game til the end and honestly 2020 helped but didn't completely heal the wound of being 14 watching my team humiliated in such a fashion.
First the Swans broke theirs in 2005 (1933-2005), then the Cats in 2007 (1963-2007), then the Bulldogs (1954-2016), then the Tigers (1980-2017), then Melbourne (1964-2021) and now they've watched all of the long droughts end except theirs.
This means that by 2013, Port are bad and go down the ~~Essendon~~ St Kilda path after winning a flag, getting the wooden spoon from 2015-2019 and not qualifying for finals from 2010-2022
My first thought was the 2018 prelim against Collingwood, but then I would deprive people of the great grand final finish. So instead I would pick the 2023 grand final and my change would be that Collingwood finish on 0.0.0.
2001 GF is the easy and obvious answer.
Round 21, 2000 was somewhat meaningless in the end but to go the whole season unbeaten would've been absolutely incredible.
The round 23 game last year that was adelaide vs sydney. one of the players (i forgot who) got a goal and the referee called it as a behind. if the crows had won that, they could’ve gotten into the top 8 last year. they ended up losing by one point. the referee was sacked for a year or something and the afl apologised. having the crowd in the top 8 last year would’ve spiced things up.
Honestly doesn’t sit right with me that the bounce of a ball cost the saints a premiership. They had em right then and there, and had they of gone back out there and played overtime Im certain they win.
I'd love to see that, only if the superflood doesn't happen. Then Essendon's perfect season falls at the very last game and the AFL gets its own '07 New England Patriots
I'll nominate the 1996 PF Brisbane v North Melbourne. A fit Michael Voss changes that result, and the Bears spank Sydney for the flag that season. Would have been a nice farewell to the Bears.
2018 Grand Final. I’m a lifelong Pies member.
Earlier that season, I took my then 5 year old kid to the Port v West Coast game as his first game. Eagles won and became his team.
To have to tell him early in the 4th quarter that it wasn’t over yet to stop him from crying and a meltdown, only to then see the Eagles win was the most heartbreaking yet magical moment of my life.
The dichotomy. How many fathers suffer a grand final loss, yet get to watch and celebrate their kid win a premiership in year zero! And to his credit, he has stuck with them ever since!
Varcoe kicks a goal in the 2013 prelim and it goes into overtime. Hawks probably would have still rolled us, but I think it would have been a more epic way to break the curse.
While I’ve been a supporter, it would be the 2020 prelim against the tigers. It really felt like our year - it was our 150th anniversary and you could tell the team really wanted it. To lose it by a few points was gutting.
2022 prelim. The greatest season I have ever and will ever see as a Collingwood supporter. If they had achieved the comeback they almost made in that last quarter we were winning the flag on willpower alone.
Melbourne v Freo Round 12 2024
condolences
I agree, scoreline shoulda been well and truly over 100 margin! Flagmantle 2024!
I knew I wouldn’t have to scroll very far to find this answer. Sorry for your loss.
I really don’t think we’re making the 8 this year 😭
2007 grand final geelong 164: Port 44
What if Port's last 9 points went to Geelong instead? 172-35.
Nah that score is too unrealistic for a GF
Absolutely not. 119 is a beautiful number. It's imperfection is what makes it so perfect. 120 is round, even, neat, could mean a lot of things. 119 is unique. I also love that it's 1 point under 20 goals. Which must really annoy them when people say they lost by 20 goals because they didn't, but they know that if they say it wasn't 20 goals they'll just get laughed at even harder.
Not surprising that a crows fan has thought this deeply about it.
It's not like we have much else going on. Gotta do something while we wait for our Premiership VHS tapes to rewind.
Who enjoyed the day more, crom or cats?
Hey. That's not nice
Sorry last months match is still fresh
2016 loss hurt the most by far (mainly because it's the only Swans GF I've attended) so gonna go with that.
Honestly, I'd change the prelim result so it's syd v gws and then roll the dice. Fuck them Vics
Not like they’ve got any fans to hold it over our heads either
Please don’t do us like that it’s the only good thing to happen to the dogs in like 4 generations
Gee I dunno, can’t think of anything in particular
Nothing involving toe-pokes and a ball bouncing strangely at the goal line right?
I don't care about 2015 enough especially because of 2018. I'll give St Kilda either 09 or 2010, and I am saying this despite me still being pissed off over last nights game.
Good take - It doesn’t sit right that they didn’t win one. I’d give them 2010 to make the Goddard mark the best grand final mark ever taken 😌
Leo Barry would be disappointed
Move the Goddard mark to the last 2 minutes to do that
This would be my answer too.
Had Saints beaten Pies in 2010 they wouldn't be at 16 now. So St Kilda winning in 2010 helps us as much as changing any result in the last 30 years for Carlton save for the 99 grand final but beating Essendon in the prelim was our grand final. I think Pies would still be on 16 cos if we'd lost 2010 we would've gone into the 2011 GF a lot hungrier.
Same here, the Dees can keep 2021 I just want all those Saints greats to have their premiership
Saints fan here, thankyou 🥹🙏🏻
2013 grand final
Any of essendons recent elimination finals
Brisbane kick 1 more goal in last year's GF
Subscribe
Hard agree. I'd like the pies to lose. Sick of Collingwood supporters being so smug all the time, they need to be humbled
Involving us: 2016 GF for obvious reasons. Not involving us: probably the 2010 drawn GF.
Just curious, what makes 2016 more desirable than 2022?
I guess the sense that we were far more dominant that year so it was more ‘deserved’, whereas 2022 kinda came outta nowhere
I think, while obviously the manner of it was less than pleasant, most Swans fans would agree that we reached that GF ahead of time and Geelong was by a distance the best team that year, so there's no real sense that we "missed" an opportunity (aside from the possibility that something wild could have happened on the day).

I also wonder whether we'd have won 2019 or 2020 without the blip in 2018. Maybe, but maybe not. I'm over the moon with 3 flags tbh
Well said
2022 elimination final it is then!
Big theory I've heard from some pockets of Collingwood fans that if we win 2018, Bucks gets more of a chance and we miss out on Fly which would have completely changed our current situation

As a pies supporter. There are so many I don’t want to think about it
2012 GF. Would've been epic to have a 4peat in our history.
A 3peat isn't enough? Fucking Hawks supporters 😂
Nah I agree with you dude #flaghoks
Our 2014 prelim to the hawks, reckon we'd take the flag after that game
Ohh u guys were the better team just kept kicking more behinds then goals
That game hurt as a neutral. I remember this sub was slanted towards cheering Port and most were pissed off for a while after that game. A few dubious calls went Hawthorn's way in the second half and your goal kicking let you down .
2022 Round 23
Would also take Round 22
2015 prelim Hawks v Freo. To have the western derby in a GF would have been incredible. But my heart might have also given out from the stress of playing freo. Aside from grand finals which are obvious, Essendons answer is so easy, 99 prelim. GWS, last year's prelim.
Last years Prelim over the 2016 Prelim? I would’ve thought with your finals record against us you’d take that instead
I think we would've beaten Brisbane pretty easily tbh
I mean 2013 would be the one…
I would like to see the Saints and Dockers win one
My initial thought was 2005 Grand Final, but then on reflection, one premiership each over 05-06 was fair. I’ll say 2015 Grand Final. We dominated Hawthorn in the qualifying final, and if the grand final hadn’t been held in Melbourne I think we’d have beaten them again.
If we played at Optus by then, I think we would've been a chance. Subiaco made us highly inconsistent on a huge ground like the MCG.
Yeah subi was a blessing and a curse. IIRC one year in the early 2000s we scraped into the finals with 12 wins, 10 of which were at subi.
Agree with you there. As much as consecutive flags would have been nice it makes me content that we both got one each. Both teams deserved a flag and what a great story it was.
‘98 Grand Final. Dynasty.
2017 GF. It's all been downhill from there...
I wonder what would have happened if we won. Probably no camp or not the same if there was. Would there still have been a drop in 2018 or would we have continued to contend? No rebuild? The GF loss really did trigger everything that came after. Better to finish 3rd than lose a GF
Happy cake day!
2015 prelim. We would of gone on and beat WC in thr Granny...
Can you imagine the pubs in WA for a derby GF?? Police would have one hell of a day And the losing teams supporters one hell of a rest of their life talking footy
Dom Sheed kicks a point 2018
that's the one
2014 GF. Buddy goes b2b by defeating his previous team.
2020 prelim, would have loved to see what we could do in a granny at home Of the GF losses, as much as I would have loved to be at a win last year, 04 to get four in a row would have been pretty special
Yeah, I'd want to have seen a flipped '04 GF result or a loss in the PF. Winning that GF is ideal, though.
Tbh I don't believe we would have beaten a prime Dustin Martin in a grand final. Wish we could have reversed the results of both prelims that year.
Not involving the pies idk maybe 2019 grand final, seeing GWS win their first flag would have been fun to see
?? Everyone going to say a granny they lost
Yeah but tbh most people also say teams other than their own
Some North fans nights say the last game of last season. Especially if it wouldn't have changed the McKay compo. Reid + McKercher...
None. It's the ones that get away that make the ones that don't more enjoyable!
I know that you're not a Saints fan now
Libbas point late in the '97 prelim gets called a goal. Reckon we would have beat the saints the next week, but either way how cool would a dogs vs saints gf have been in '97? Us trying to break a 43 year drought, the saints a 31 year drought.
I feel like the Saints win that but imagine Saints v Dogs in 2009 instead if the doggies win week one against geelong
222-65 lives rent free in my head forever. Was at the game til the end and honestly 2020 helped but didn't completely heal the wound of being 14 watching my team humiliated in such a fashion.
Involving Richmond: 2018 Prelim Not involving Richmond: 2009 grand final
Not involving Melbourne, clearly the 2010 drawn Grand Final. Long suffering saints fans deserve some reward.
First the Swans broke theirs in 2005 (1933-2005), then the Cats in 2007 (1963-2007), then the Bulldogs (1954-2016), then the Tigers (1980-2017), then Melbourne (1964-2021) and now they've watched all of the long droughts end except theirs.
2017 gf
2007, port win by 474,846,364 points or more sensibly, last year round 19 port v pies, reverse the scores 85-83 ports way
That would be desirable
The 2023 prelim against Collingwood.
I don't know if you remember, but Melbourne went out in straight sets again.
I do remember, but I fucking hate Collingwood more than I hate Carlton.
2018 prelim against Collingwood.
‘09 Grand Final Saints deserve a second premiership.
Actually thats true i'd like to take one off the cats and give it to the saints too
Then we get 08 instead
Swap the 07 GF results, I want the power of 119 in the palm of our hands
This means that by 2013, Port are bad and go down the ~~Essendon~~ St Kilda path after winning a flag, getting the wooden spoon from 2015-2019 and not qualifying for finals from 2010-2022
My first thought was the 2018 prelim against Collingwood, but then I would deprive people of the great grand final finish. So instead I would pick the 2023 grand final and my change would be that Collingwood finish on 0.0.0.
I reckon it would be most melbourne supporters after today's performance
Wtf even was that from Melbourne
I'd give the saints a grand final win, or Freo.
That one. You all know the one I mean.
The one that was close until it wasn't?
2023 GF obviously
I'm good
2001 GF is the easy and obvious answer. Round 21, 2000 was somewhat meaningless in the end but to go the whole season unbeaten would've been absolutely incredible.
If the bombers win 2001, do they win 2002 and three-peat? Do they win finals past 2004?
The round 23 game last year that was adelaide vs sydney. one of the players (i forgot who) got a goal and the referee called it as a behind. if the crows had won that, they could’ve gotten into the top 8 last year. they ended up losing by one point. the referee was sacked for a year or something and the afl apologised. having the crowd in the top 8 last year would’ve spiced things up.
Essendon win the 1990 grand final for another 20 years of colliwobbles, the meme era of this would have been incredible.
For personal reasons, probably the least likely game i'd change
Honestly doesn’t sit right with me that the bounce of a ball cost the saints a premiership. They had em right then and there, and had they of gone back out there and played overtime Im certain they win.
2023 R21. Essendon vs West Coast. I'll take 1 Harley Ried pls.
Why not the win against the suns? Larkey with the worst 9 goal performance of all time.
I was looking for this
Would have happily taken the 2000 premiership thanks
I would prefer the 2023 Qualifying Final. Brayshaw going down but being avenged to some degree
I'd love to see that, only if the superflood doesn't happen. Then Essendon's perfect season falls at the very last game and the AFL gets its own '07 New England Patriots
Carlton v Freo round 4 2024. Personally, I'd have not given Carlton two free goals at the end.
2021. I will die on the hill that Josh Bruce’s ACL cost us a flag.
Hmm. This is a real tough one.
I'll nominate the 1996 PF Brisbane v North Melbourne. A fit Michael Voss changes that result, and the Bears spank Sydney for the flag that season. Would have been a nice farewell to the Bears.
How about that last Fitzroy game against Richmond? I wasn't even alive then, but the story there would be amazing
I wasn't alive either
I would probably go the 85 prelim where Fitzroy lost by less than a goal.
83 qualifying is the game you are thinking of, I think.
Last year's prelim or the 2019 gf.
your contemplating between a gf and prelim?
Melbourne defy massive odds to win 2000 GF
Like the NY Giants in 2007
2010 GF, sorry Collingwood fans
Last year’s prelim against Brissie. That would have been some granny
Melbourne would've burnt to the ground no matter who'd win in a Carlton/Collingwood GF
As a lions supporter I would have rather have lost to you lot in a prelim than them in a GF. 6/7 months of pain is better than a lifetime of pain.
2023 Grand Final. I flew in from Perth bro 😭
I like your first example ignore my flair
Carlton v Collingwood round 23, 2022. Carlton wins, Freo make top 4, we take Geelong for the cup
2018 Prelim probably. Stupid big Cox.
What a great game. That game had half of his career marks alone too.
In hindsight though, losing that meant you didn't get rolled in the Granny. Ignore flair.
I feel that if we lose that game we would not win 2023, so it wouldn't feel as good, and why isn't the kid going for Collingwood?
2014 prelim final hawk v port and 2007 grand final 345 - 5 ports way
2017 GF of course, that was our year
sydney swans vs cats 22 gf
1997 Prelim. 27 years later and that one still hurts the most.
2004 grand final
Collingwood have a 4-peat from the 20s, hawthorn and brisbane almost got one too
Varcoe kicks a goal in the 2013 prelim and it goes into overtime. Hawks probably would have still rolled us, but I think it would have been a more epic way to break the curse.
2020 GF so GAJ could go out with another premiership
I’m surprised no one has said round 23 2022
They have but no thanks
In my top 3 favourite games ever. Pure ecstasy.
2005 fucken Leo Barry dog
yeah but you got one the next year and that moment is iconic. also the swans had the longest drought in football history.
2018 prelim. Mason fucking Cox.
2019 Prelim
2017 GF. Please.
While I’ve been a supporter, it would be the 2020 prelim against the tigers. It really felt like our year - it was our 150th anniversary and you could tell the team really wanted it. To lose it by a few points was gutting.
The match where Carey played against north for the first time.
2002.
2017 grand final.
2009 Grand Final, St Kilda v Geelong
Agreed
2022 grand final: A score line which sees us come closer than 81 points
Id swap the free kick count around. Instead of 20-8 Bulldogs, I'd go 20-8 Swans. The result would take care of itself
2019 Grand Final just switch the scores
Guess the only one that makes sense is the 2021 Grand final. But the 1997 prelim is up there
Round 21, 2000. Fucking bulldogs, fucking Terry Wallace, fucking flooding.
Essendon 1999 prelim
2018 grand final against West coast, that last kick being a miss would of been better
At this point I'll change any game North play, this whole losing business really is exhausting 😅
I might need to make a whole post just for freo games
2022 prelim. The greatest season I have ever and will ever see as a Collingwood supporter. If they had achieved the comeback they almost made in that last quarter we were winning the flag on willpower alone.
We would’ve lost the next week tbh
North fans surely have to answer the last game of last season.
1st GF 2010. Solidified my lifelong love hate relationship with the game. Damn that bounce.
Obviously 2017 GF, other than that, Adelaide Vs Sydney round 23 2023
SMH flagcrom vs flagpies grand final would’ve been legendary
2008 gf. Only things standing between the Cats and the title of undisputed best of all time
2021 Grand final
Gather round blues v Freo my team stole a fraudulent win. Dumpires
I feel that the flair says it all.
north melbourne vs bulldogs good friday 2021
