OcularPrism

Would this leave any weird taste?

SpongeBob1187

Depends on the quality I guess, I use these for scotch and they donā€™t change the flavor none

The_Celtic_Chemist

Did anyone else read "none" and then go back and re-read this comment with an accent?

BathSaltJello

yeah, I sounded racist.

Soft_Penis_Debutante

I sounded like a hillbilly

Elfkrunch

I sounded like I was from Yorkshire.

Final-Aces

Soundedā€¦.

Gan-san

I added "luv" to the end.

Maleficent-Rub-8060

What is surface density of the liquid and how is it impacted by the steel?

ZippyDan

There's no way to know for sure without a finely tuned turbo encabulator.

shieldyboii

unfortunately because most people donā€™t have the budget for a quantum profibrilating tuner at home.

SpongeBob1187

I get it but I donā€™t take it that serious. Just another drink for me my friend

The_Sentinel_45

They can if you put them in a freezer without putting them in an airtight container.

Not-Ed-Sheeran

They got stone ones which dont leave a taste at all and they work great and they look classier

CryptoScamee42069

Seconded. Whiskey stones are the tits šŸ¤™

lionbythetail

I have the stones and I use them (lol) and third this. No taste at all. Maybe someone can do a science and tell us which material would provide more cooling based on density or something. Edit: I did a little science and it seems that thermal conductivity is the biggest factor in how fast a material absorbs heat from its surroundings. Stone and metal are both good thermal conductors. Metal is typically better, and in a product test of whiskey stones vs steel cubes, the steel measured in the low 50s F and the stone in the high 60s. *However*, amongst the metals, steel is one of the *worst* conductors. Silver, gold, and copper all perform far better and have the added bonus of being baller af and ludicrously expensive. Someone still needs to science which material can pull more total heat from a beverage. There must be a storage capacity factor in addition to speed of transfer. I donā€™t want my drink to drop 3 degrees really fast and then stop. I want it to be gently and lovingly cooled until Iā€™m done beveraging.

jagoble

You're looking to add consideration of specific heat capacity, a measure of how much heat has to be applied to a given mass of a material to raise its temperature one degree. This is effectively a measure of how much heat a metal can store. Copper's specific heat capacity is 0.38 J/(g-Ā°C). Silver is 0.24. Gold is 0.13. And steel is around 0.5 (varies a bit by alloy). Aluminum's value is 0.92, so a gram of it can store nearly twice as much heat as a gram of steel, but it's much less dense so you'd need a cube that's 2.5 times bigger. Add in that steel's cheap and easy to care for, and now you have a pretty comprehensive understanding for why it's a popular ice cube substitute.

lionbythetail

Thank you. Science!

MiaLba

We had some plastic ones in the early 2000ā€™s that definitely left a Weird taste.

joshzerofactor

Not that Iā€™ve noticed. Just have to be careful with the container. Mine slid out of the freezer and broke. Cubes were okay though. Had to 3D print a replacement container.

yourbigtoy415

One of the biggest ways ice cools down your drinks is because it melts and the cold ice water mixes with the warmer beverage. So the metal or stone cooling aolutoons are usually worse for keeping you drink cold

HoneyDutch

Itā€™s chinesium, so yes. Youā€™ll probably start getting brain fog and headaches after a few weeks too

mordary

Lol no I have those at home, and I use those regularly. No headaches at all, no brain fog

Lucas-Fields

Totally read that as ā€œbrain frogā€ twice and I was about to comment on the lines of ā€œthatā€™s what someone with a frog controlling their brain would sayā€ I donā€™t know why I didnā€™t even question this concept before re-reading

Puzzleheaded_Roof514

HypnoToad vibes

WillyDAFISH

I don't use these and I always have brain fog

jedi21knight

How many uses can you use these before having to put them back in the freezer? Do they work as good as ice? Any negatives?

IamLeoKim

You get to have bit of ice tea-th

zoop0rt

These go great in whisky, until you swallow one šŸ˜Æ

Redhawk4t4

At least the edges look rounded off for when they come out

krawinoff

Reverse anal beads

DeusExMachinaOverdue

You just made me visualise a pac-man like ass eating beads as it moves along.

CremeDeLaPants

I'd play that.

frenix5

Might break your toilet bowl depending on its exit velocity

StruggleSouth7023

How fucking wide do you guys open your mouth to take a drink

Porsche928dude

If you manage to not notice a one inch steel cube till your in the process of swallowing it, you deserve your fate.

BoBoBearDev

Very good point, especially I have accidentally swallowed an ice cube in the past.

radtad43

Stop deep throating your whiskey. Real alcoholics sip it si it lasts all day

greatabe

freezing water is too hard and free I guess....

Meowzerzes

theyā€™re for when you donā€™t want water melting into your drink. some drinks donā€™t taste good with water. if you donā€™t want the cubes you can just refrigerate your beverages tho.

secular_dance_crime

Ok... but when exactly would this be the case? Don't get me wrong, but water is the primary ingredient in most drinks, so what you do is account for dilution, by making the drink more concentrated.

showeringgold

Whisky

DonksterWasTaken

Seems pretty safe to me?

CinderChop

It's fine until they fall into the garbage disposal.

daffquick1990

Or you try and take a quick sip and they smash into your teeth

Jamboney145

But then I canā€™t eat the ice, which is the best part

Meowzerzes

Not trying to yuck your yum. I just thought I should let you know that chewing ice is bad for your teeth. Do what you will with this information

Jamboney145

A lot of things are bad for our teeth and thatā€™s never stopped us before, but thanks for the heads up

Truemeathead

I have some of these but they are balls. They work pretty good but I donā€™t use them much because it feels like Iā€™m gonna break some shit.

Idonthavetotellyiu

This entire comment section is wild and has so many directions

DitchDigger330

Imagine this slamming into your teeth.

NicePuddle

I feel like the maker of this product doesn't understand that ice cubes cool your drink cold by melting, not by just being cold blocks.

baulsaak

That's the exact problem it's trying to solve... cool a beverage *without* diluting it.

Zedd_Prophecy

I tried whiskey stones but went back to ice as I missed the water inclusion.

Apwye

Add water

shortbus_wunderkind

Then you might as well use the more economical ice cubes?!?

Apwye

You get to add the amount of water you want and donā€™t have to wait for the ice cubes to melt I guess

kidwithanaxe

But you will lose the massive advantage of high specific heat capacity of ice.

jroll25

šŸ¤Æ

MeanNothing3932

Gotta stay hydrated right!?!

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

eras

Well these also cool it, just not as well. And it's difficult to avoid dilution with melting ice. What they should make, though, would be these kind of cubes, but with phase changing substance inside them, much like coolers have.

r_a_d_

You could use dry ice, but then it would seem that you were in a tiki bar.

mogley19922

They're normally used as whiskey stones, which don't need to be as cold because most people want chilled whiskey more than ice cold.

roundhashbrowntown

exactly, they never work! i hate these things šŸ˜«

PatientOne3053

But if it ain't broken why tryna fix it, Normal Ice was working fine I guess.

BigBen6500

If you drink whiskey, you don't want the ice to melt, and ruin the quality of your whiskey

secular_dance_crime

Well... normal ice is kinda messy at home... gotta find exactly the right way to place it in the freezer... this is obviously a lot more convenient, so it absolutely is a nice solution.

No_Spare3139

How am I supposed to chew up my alcohol flavor ice with this shit?

Reusable like it something environmental friendly?

secular_dance_crime

I'm pretty sure environmental isn't the goal...

Jamboney145

But then I canā€™t eat the ice, which is the best part

Neverlast0

I feel like those wouldn't have the heat inertia to be good.

mt007

Water would be fine for now.

AndronixESE

Okey, but how am I supposed crunch in them?

1Derpdos1

Got the exact same but they are made from lead. Love m!

WonderingPhoenician

am i the only one who likes the extra water regular ice puts in my drinks?

-Robert-from-Hungary

Put the coke into the fidge....

Cheesetorian

I have one made out of rocks...but like most people here said they're not good in amounts of liquids over a cup or two (andt that's pushing it). They're really made for sippin scotch or whiskey.

skkulllffaceemmojjji

Anyone ever heard of... water?

ConstantBench7373

Are there glass cubes?

TheRealrextalk

An ice chewerā€™s greatest challenge

W3R3Hamster

Whiskey Stones are cooler

Champion-Dante

Yes, because normal ice cubes were so terrible and inconvenient, and definitely arenā€™t made by cooling down one of the most abundant resources on the planet

Haunting_Ad_6021

Are they dishwasher-safe ice cubes?

Most_Independent_789

I find ice cubes more enjoyable I find a good amount waters down my sodas just enough.

Spacial_Epithet

Tell me how it's a fucking ice cube

SirKazum

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't these last too little due to the smaller heat capacity and greatest heat transfer rate compared to ice?

SirKazum

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't these last too little due to the smaller heat capacity and greatest heat transfer rate compared to ice?

K3ndog411

Hell no

PM_ME_YOUR_TIE_POSE

Never tried steel ones but the stone versions are crap.

amartchenko

Heat capacity of steel is 8 times small than that of water. So you will need 8 steel cubes to have the same cooling effect as one ice cube.

ContemplatingPrison

Lol lead in all your drinks

XEagleDeagleX

Yeah these don't work

SwegGamerBro

Gentlemen, just how hard is it to freeze.. ..water?

Ayen_C

I have these. Used them like once, and they've just been in my freezer for like 8 years. Lol

abiabi2884

Dont buy them! The cooling effect comes from the melting. Somebody did the math behind that and the metal ones just have like 10% compared to water. I have them myself and theyre shit.

BigBen6500

I heard of "Whiskey stones". They look more stylish than metal cubes tho. google it, looks nice

Ok_Association_7829

I used small plastic bottles for the same. Almost free and way more environmental friendly

bedatbull

Would be good for my bong? Iā€™m tired of replacing ice cubes after they melt lol

Jiganska

u/SaveVideo/

speghettiiii

but don't metals cool down and heat up faster? so won't it keep your drink cooler for a lesser amount of time as compared to ice?

Objective-Guidance78

Canā€™t I just use some clean nuts and blots?

Deckard2022

I got given these as a way to chill whisky without watering it down. Itā€™s all fun and games before a steel block smashes into your front teeth.

grrodon2

Just use smooth rocks. Metal loses heat way too fast.

DeceptiKHAAAAAN

I own them and like them, but they unfortunately donā€™t keep things cold as long as traditional ice cubes.

Dunstin_Checks_in

My garbage disposal is shaking in its boots

MilesTeg831

Until they crack your teeth. Donā€™t use these.

ThornmaneTreebeard

I like it when the ice melts and dilutes my alcohol. Maybe I'm weird.

RobertXavierIV

Well, itā€™s not exactly a novel idea. Why do you think you ask for a drink on ā€œthe rocksā€? Many people still use whiskey stones.

contl

What doesn't get said here is that they will break your glass then you go to have a sip and one cube slides off its pal.

macneto

I like a touch of water in my whiskey and bourbon. I like when the ice melts.

is300wrx

What happens if you accidentally ingest?

BPond

I like it when the ice melts a little.

Kvmabis

I actually feel like they are about 40% as effective as ice. It'll be cool for the first few min but after a while it doesn't keep as cold as if want it to be

StrangeQube

These doing work very well. Waste of money

WillowPuzzleheaded87

Thatā€™s just something else to clean.

Crab_Hot

Rinse mainly.

MazinQuartz97

Too much iron to consumed.

arthurb09

What about contamination ?? And how long they last before rust starts? And later, how long before we actually do see the rust?? Whatā€™s the composition ? Looks like, due to this, we are slowly killing ourselves..

porym

It says stainless steel, so if itā€™s high quality stainless steel, it wonā€™t rust and there wonā€™t be any contamination.

arthurb09

Good to know! Iā€™d still like to know its full composition though. If it doesnā€™t have any consequences, then I do not see why not having these! šŸ‘

Fair-Bus-4017

These type of things are absolutely garbage for cooling. Just use ice if you want to cool your drink.

zephillou

Some drinks shouldn't be diluted. šŸ˜Š

Fair-Bus-4017

Yes but the heat transfer of something like this does almost nothing. So when it comes to that just put ur drink in the freezer for 10 minutes.

zephillou

It's worked for me when I had room temp beer. I have "steels" that are in the freezer all the time, I put the steel in the glass, pour the drink and it's colder after about 1 to 2 minutes... Would take longer in the freezer.

Fair-Bus-4017

from what I have seen they don't. But hey you do you.

zephillou

We should have a drink sometimes šŸ˜‚šŸ»

Fair-Bus-4017

What type of beer do you drink? If pilsner I will bring some Dutch beers if not then probably some Belgium stuff šŸ‘Œ

zephillou

I drink everything. Pilsner, blondes, whites, sours, radlers, stouts and porters, trippels, etc... Yum There's a beer for every occasion šŸ˜ although ipa's are a hit or miss for me

Fair-Bus-4017

Well in that case I will make sure to have something on at all times on me just in case we cross paths hahahaha.

24_Chowder

More Chinese shit to trust?? No thanks, Iā€™ll pass.

Ponyboy451

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 80% of your live is already made in China.

Mindless-Ask-9691

I guess you're throwing out 90% of the electronics (and most other stuff as a matter of fact) you own in your house then?

SopmodTew

Should've been made outta gold so they don't change the taste

Van-garde

Frozen fruit has more fiber and you can eat it after.
