I have the stones and I use them (lol) and third this. No taste at all.
Maybe someone can do a science and tell us which material would provide more cooling based on density or something.
Edit: I did a little science and it seems that thermal conductivity is the biggest factor in how fast a material absorbs heat from its surroundings. Stone and metal are both good thermal conductors. Metal is typically better, and in a product test of whiskey stones vs steel cubes, the steel measured in the low 50s F and the stone in the high 60s.
*However*, amongst the metals, steel is one of the *worst* conductors. Silver, gold, and copper all perform far better and have the added bonus of being baller af and ludicrously expensive.
Someone still needs to science which material can pull more total heat from a beverage. There must be a storage capacity factor in addition to speed of transfer. I donāt want my drink to drop 3 degrees really fast and then stop. I want it to be gently and lovingly cooled until Iām done beveraging.
You're looking to add consideration of specific heat capacity, a measure of how much heat has to be applied to a given mass of a material to raise its temperature one degree. This is effectively a measure of how much heat a metal can store.
Copper's specific heat capacity is 0.38 J/(g-Ā°C). Silver is 0.24. Gold is 0.13. And steel is around 0.5 (varies a bit by alloy). Aluminum's value is 0.92, so a gram of it can store nearly twice as much heat as a gram of steel, but it's much less dense so you'd need a cube that's 2.5 times bigger. Add in that steel's cheap and easy to care for, and now you have a pretty comprehensive understanding for why it's a popular ice cube substitute.
Not that Iāve noticed. Just have to be careful with the container. Mine slid out of the freezer and broke. Cubes were okay though. Had to 3D print a replacement container.
One of the biggest ways ice cools down your drinks is because it melts and the cold ice water mixes with the warmer beverage.
So the metal or stone cooling aolutoons are usually worse for keeping you drink cold
Totally read that as ābrain frogā twice and I was about to comment on the lines of āthatās what someone with a frog controlling their brain would sayā
I donāt know why I didnāt even question this concept before re-reading
theyāre for when you donāt want water melting into your drink. some drinks donāt taste good with water. if you donāt want the cubes you can just refrigerate your beverages tho.
Ok... but when exactly would this be the case? Don't get me wrong, but water is the primary ingredient in most drinks, so what you do is account for dilution, by making the drink more concentrated.
Well these also cool it, just not as well. And it's difficult to avoid dilution with melting ice.
What they should make, though, would be these kind of cubes, but with phase changing substance inside them, much like coolers have.
Well... normal ice is kinda messy at home... gotta find exactly the right way to place it in the freezer... this is obviously a lot more convenient, so it absolutely is a nice solution.

I have one made out of rocks...but like most people here said they're not good in amounts of liquids over a cup or two (andt that's pushing it). They're really made for sippin scotch or whiskey.
Yes, because normal ice cubes were so terrible and inconvenient, and definitely arenāt made by cooling down one of the most abundant resources on the planet
Dont buy them! The cooling effect comes from the melting. Somebody did the math behind that and the metal ones just have like 10% compared to water. I have them myself and theyre shit.

I actually feel like they are about 40% as effective as ice. It'll be cool for the first few min but after a while it doesn't keep as cold as if want it to be
What about contamination ?? And how long they last before rust starts? And later, how long before we actually do see the rust??
Whatās the composition ?
Looks like, due to this, we are slowly killing ourselves..
Good to know! Iād still like to know its full composition though. If it doesnāt have any consequences, then I do not see why not having these! š
It's worked for me when I had room temp beer. I have "steels" that are in the freezer all the time, I put the steel in the glass, pour the drink and it's colder after about 1 to 2 minutes...
Would take longer in the freezer.
I drink everything. Pilsner, blondes, whites, sours, radlers, stouts and porters, trippels, etc... Yum
There's a beer for every occasion š although ipa's are a hit or miss for me

Would this leave any weird taste?
Depends on the quality I guess, I use these for scotch and they donāt change the flavor none
Did anyone else read "none" and then go back and re-read this comment with an accent?

I get it but I donāt take it that serious. Just another drink for me my friend
They can if you put them in a freezer without putting them in an airtight container.
They got stone ones which dont leave a taste at all and they work great and they look classier
Seconded. Whiskey stones are the tits š¤

So long as you don't chew these cubes. Unless you are a villain's henchman named Jaws :)
Glass breakers

Both classics tbh!!!!

I'd play that.

How fucking wide do you guys open your mouth to take a drink
If you manage to not notice a one inch steel cube till your in the process of swallowing it, you deserve your fate.
Very good point, especially I have accidentally swallowed an ice cube in the past.

It's fine until they fall into the garbage disposal.
Or you try and take a quick sip and they smash into your teeth
But then I canāt eat the ice, which is the best part
Not trying to yuck your yum. I just thought I should let you know that chewing ice is bad for your teeth. Do what you will with this information
A lot of things are bad for our teeth and thatās never stopped us before, but thanks for the heads up
I have some of these but they are balls. They work pretty good but I donāt use them much because it feels like Iām gonna break some shit.
This entire comment section is wild and has so many directions
Imagine this slamming into your teeth.
I feel like the maker of this product doesn't understand that ice cubes cool your drink cold by melting, not by just being cold blocks.
That's the exact problem it's trying to solve... cool a beverage *without* diluting it.
I tried whiskey stones but went back to ice as I missed the water inclusion.
Add water
Then you might as well use the more economical ice cubes?!?
You get to add the amount of water you want and donāt have to wait for the ice cubes to melt I guess
But you will lose the massive advantage of high specific heat capacity of ice.

Gotta stay hydrated right!?!

You could use dry ice, but then it would seem that you were in a tiki bar.
They're normally used as whiskey stones, which don't need to be as cold because most people want chilled whiskey more than ice cold.
exactly, they never work! i hate these things š«
But if it ain't broken why tryna fix it, Normal Ice was working fine I guess.
If you drink whiskey, you don't want the ice to melt, and ruin the quality of your whiskey
Well... normal ice is kinda messy at home... gotta find exactly the right way to place it in the freezer... this is obviously a lot more convenient, so it absolutely is a nice solution.

Reusable like it something environmental friendly?
I'm pretty sure environmental isn't the goal...
But then I canāt eat the ice, which is the best part
I feel like those wouldn't have the heat inertia to be good.
Water would be fine for now.
Okey, but how am I supposed crunch in them?
Got the exact same but they are made from lead. Love m!
am i the only one who likes the extra water regular ice puts in my drinks?

Are there glass cubes?
An ice chewerās greatest challenge
Whiskey Stones are cooler
Yes, because normal ice cubes were so terrible and inconvenient, and definitely arenāt made by cooling down one of the most abundant resources on the planet
Are they dishwasher-safe ice cubes?
I find ice cubes more enjoyable I find a good amount waters down my sodas just enough.
Tell me how it's a fucking ice cube
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't these last too little due to the smaller heat capacity and greatest heat transfer rate compared to ice?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't these last too little due to the smaller heat capacity and greatest heat transfer rate compared to ice?
Hell no
Never tried steel ones but the stone versions are crap.
Heat capacity of steel is 8 times small than that of water. So you will need 8 steel cubes to have the same cooling effect as one ice cube.
Lol lead in all your drinks
Yeah these don't work
Gentlemen, just how hard is it to freeze.. ..water?
I have these. Used them like once, and they've just been in my freezer for like 8 years. Lol

I heard of "Whiskey stones". They look more stylish than metal cubes tho. google it, looks nice
I used small plastic bottles for the same. Almost free and way more environmental friendly
Would be good for my bong? Iām tired of replacing ice cubes after they melt lol
u/SaveVideo/
but don't metals cool down and heat up faster? so won't it keep your drink cooler for a lesser amount of time as compared to ice?
Canāt I just use some clean nuts and blots?

I got given these as a way to chill whisky without watering it down. Itās all fun and games before a steel block smashes into your front teeth.
Just use smooth rocks. Metal loses heat way too fast.
I own them and like them, but they unfortunately donāt keep things cold as long as traditional ice cubes.
My garbage disposal is shaking in its boots
Until they crack your teeth. Donāt use these.
I like it when the ice melts and dilutes my alcohol. Maybe I'm weird.
Well, itās not exactly a novel idea. Why do you think you ask for a drink on āthe rocksā? Many people still use whiskey stones.
What doesn't get said here is that they will break your glass then you go to have a sip and one cube slides off its pal.
I like a touch of water in my whiskey and bourbon. I like when the ice melts.
What happens if you accidentally ingest?
I like it when the ice melts a little.
I actually feel like they are about 40% as effective as ice. It'll be cool for the first few min but after a while it doesn't keep as cold as if want it to be

It says stainless steel, so if itās high quality stainless steel, it wonāt rust and there wonāt be any contamination.
Good to know! Iād still like to know its full composition though. If it doesnāt have any consequences, then I do not see why not having these! š
These type of things are absolutely garbage for cooling. Just use ice if you want to cool your drink.
Some drinks shouldn't be diluted. š
Yes but the heat transfer of something like this does almost nothing. So when it comes to that just put ur drink in the freezer for 10 minutes.
It's worked for me when I had room temp beer. I have "steels" that are in the freezer all the time, I put the steel in the glass, pour the drink and it's colder after about 1 to 2 minutes... Would take longer in the freezer.
from what I have seen they don't. But hey you do you.
We should have a drink sometimes šš»
What type of beer do you drink? If pilsner I will bring some Dutch beers if not then probably some Belgium stuff š
I drink everything. Pilsner, blondes, whites, sours, radlers, stouts and porters, trippels, etc... Yum There's a beer for every occasion š although ipa's are a hit or miss for me
Well in that case I will make sure to have something on at all times on me just in case we cross paths hahahaha.
