I think the best explanation is that, in the context of rising economic inequality and stagnation for many in the US, his supporters believe that he is the only candidate that recognizes they are struggling and validates them. The problem is that this is fake: most of his policies (tax cuts to the rich, anti-healthcare, etc.) actually work against most of his supporters’ interests.
