Just about every single green county in Kentucky is only green because those are “dry” counties that restrict the sale of liquor. Family is from Casey County (western edge of Appalachia in KY), which is one of them.
Lee County (my hometown and where I live) finally became wet around 5 years ago. We could literally drive an extra 5 miles to Booneville and get it before so it didn't make much difference.
My great grandmother was from Lee County! Funnily enough, she had stories about the revenuers in their nice suits who would go up in the hills and never come down again. Family records also say that our family was moonshiners, so maybe she knew?
I lived in Boyle Co. KY for a while, when my husband was finishing College.
I was a waitress as my second job, and we could sell alcohol in the restaurant, but you couldn't go buy it.
Tourists on the Bourbon Trail were very confused. You can drive to a restaurant and drink, then drive home. But you can't go buy alcohol, and then drink it at home where you don't have to drive?
This was also the year they outlawed dancing at establishments that sold alcohol, so.....
Moonshine arose in many of those counties because of alcohol laws.
There's a lot of towns, municipalities, even whole counties that remain dry across Appalachia. Dry in terms of allowing alcohol to be sold through an ABC store. Generally beer is allowed, but anything heavier is not.
These areas typically have a history of moonshining...
From the tip of Virginia there where it’s green and all my uncles/grandparents make their own wine and shine. It’s very common so you may be on to something.
I grew up in a county that was dry until roughly 2000 or so. Most of the "respectable" people in my hometown drove to the town 15 minutes away to buy beer. Our tax revenues didn't suffer though. All the respectable people from there came to our town.
Never take one Baptist fishing with you, or he will drink all your beer. It is better to take two so they will watch each other to make sure neither drinks.
Is it based on legality or self reported drinking habits?
Many people will say, "I don't drink" (referring to liqour) and then go consume 12 cans of budweiser
You cannot convince me that Cabell County WV does not sell a metric shit ton of alcohol. Or Monongalia County WV. That's where the two big universities are in WV. Football game days alone should take these two off the dryest list.
Lol oh really? I was looking at the boarder between NC and TN. The dry counties there finally went wet when they realized everyone was drinking from the nearest wet county anyway. The Tennessee side is still all dry I think but only because liquor cuts into meth sales. Might be a deeply flawed study
Yeah, I used to live in a dry county in western Kentucky. The mayor was my bootlegger, I shit you not. Dry county but it was like a meth buffet. This was back in 2000, you could still smoke in the grocery stores there back then. It was a trip.
Same era for WNC. Town bootlegger did business in the police dept. Parking lot to avoid hassles. No meth to speak of, but a lively community for black tar.
That reminds me of Kermit WV, where the Preeces were selling drugs out of a trailer next to the town hall/police department. And I mean blatantly. Arson for hire too with the fire department. Absolutely crazy.

Thanks, that was an interesting read! The corruption wasn't quite as brazen in WNC although I do recall a sister of the police chief trading a couple bales of weed for a brand new truck at the local dealership.
This is based on self reporting.
Info says the numbers were pulled from the CDC's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), which "is the nation’s premier system of health-related telephone surveys that collect state data about U.S. residents regarding their health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services." In other words, a phone survey.
TL;Dr - Some of y'all lie like a rug.
I live in one of those green counties in the South. It's absolute horseshit. I pick up so goddamn many beer cans and bottles on the road each week because of assholes who drink and drive.
Why? Because you think WV residents drink a lot more?
I’m experience it’s very true, at least where I live. I drink, I keep alcohol in my house, but when I visit friends and family the majority of them don’t even keep alcohol in their house or drink at all for that matter.
Drunks and pillheads are easily noticeable in public, what you don’t notice is the thousands of other people minding their own business not consuming drugs.
Very well connected in the region. People drink, and the craft brewing industry is booming. There isn't a single dry county in the state, and most blue laws have been repealed or softened.
Curious how some of these green counties align with known moonshine areas. I’m thinking the data was complied using alcohol sales….

Same here in Madison county

Owsley County here! Hi neighbor!

Footloose
Yep
Or cannabis legalization…. But yes Creekwater sales are flourishing in Appalachia!
Yeah, my county is green when it is very much not green now nor was it green when alcohol sale wasn’t permitted.
Review East TN and know North of Knox county is straight moonshine country. I believe your theory to be correct
Dark green area here, and not a dry county either (tho some towns are). Moonshine very easy to find.

TIL, people in Appalachia lie about how much they drink. Just kidding, I've actually known this forever.

Yeah, I am calling bullshit on this one.
"Made Up Statistics' for $1000, Alex.
I think it's sales, not consumption. Lived in a dry county surrounded by dry counties for seven years. DUI was huge up there.

Wisconsin wins the prize, and consumes half the domestic production of brandy within its borders.
Can confirm: drank a shitload of Mr Boston 5 Star with Boss back in the day
no surpise here.

Lie to the government - yeahhhhhhhhhh. NeVeR dOnE did THat Bferrrr?
I'm shocked. We have a longstanding history of trusting Uncle Sam, especially when it comes to important things like liquor.
I’m surprised New Mexico is so green
I highly doubt that so much of the south is really that dry. 😂
There are whole dry counties where you can't buy liquor. But this map feels suspect: Clark county (Vegas) is sober?
Good eye! I missed that one!
I live in one of those green counties in the South. It's absolute horseshit. I pick up so goddamn many beer cans and bottles on the road each week because of assholes who drink and drive.
That makes me so sad and angry on so many levels. 🥺😡
What is up with this map though? That’s not what Louisiana is shaped like. I just looked outside to be sure.
🤣
Wv green? lol lol ok got ya 👍
Glad to see WV doing good. Alcohol is a bad as pills, meth or any other drugs when it’s abused.
I know right!!!!
Yeah this data is bullshit

Yeah I am sober in Va Beach until I get home
So YOU'RE the one waiting til you get home.
AND?

You mean Wisconsin? Buncha lushes up there apparently, though that tracks with everything I know about Wisconsin.
Yes. Saw the mitten shape and assumed MI.
utah?
Because of all of the Mormons
but it was not green...it was yellow (more alcohol)... that's why I commented
Utah is like all green. Green = dry.
huh. you're right. I swear it was all yellow last night. But then...I had been drinking
God damn, Wisconsinites are pickled
This does not surprise me. The greenest states I don't care much for. New Mexico is the exception. Never been to Utah.
TIL to never drive in Wisconsin
Wisconsin! What are you doing?!? Lol
Living it up apparently
Drunk ass Rockwall County mother fuckers. No wonder the bridge is always fucked up.
holy shit Wisconsin!
Wisconsin represent! We like to drink, have sex and eat cheese. Not necessarily in any particular order.
OMG Wisconsin is SO red
I work in a Doctors office and although the county’s excessive drinking rate is north of 20% I somehow NEVER manage to meet those people.
Wtf is going on is Wisconsin
Not a damn thing for about seven to nine months out of the year except drinking.
This map is crap. I doubt Clark County Nevada is a dry county. (Las Vegas).
Sheesh Wisconsin, what are you putting in those cheese curds?!?
As someone who is deep in and surrounded by green. This list is bullshit. More drunks around than fucking dogs.
Wisconsin Sobriety Challenge: Impossible
Bullshit.
The heck happened to Michigan?
Now do a map for Meth
This map just explained Ron Johnson.
I'm a total teetotaler, no drugs (including weed), no smoking and no alcohol. I'm already blessed enough to live in the greatest place in the world.
Albuquerque?
Good for you
Ok
I don’t drink and honestly don’t know anyone who does anymore. It’s literal poison.
