Ton Steine Scherben - halt dich an deiner Liebe fest
beautiful lyrics, has been covered a lot but the original is the best.

I am a little partial to Schrei nach Liebe by die Ärzte
Because it gives the necessary power to an unfortunately timeless message.
honorable mentions include
MfG by die Fantastischen Vier for what you can do with the language
Der Weg by Herbert Grönemeyer for just being a beautiful piece giving voice to honest emotions
Die Lewwerworscht by die anonyme Giddarischde because lol
EDIT: and maybe add the German Version of
Liam by In Extremo because damn I love this song.
While Schrei nach Liebe is good, I personally think "Deine Schuld" has a much stronger message. A reminder to be mad, not apathetic. To participate politically.
Its my favourite song of all time, to each their own though.
Beautiful reply and I wholeheartedly agree with your choices.
>for what you can do with the language
Given that non-native speakers might think of German as a "harsh" language, due to depictions in Hollywood movies and given our famous militant history, I want to chime in on this notion and add two of the most melodic lyrics I have ever heard.
The songs are from folk band Wild Silk from the early 90ies. Lyrics are or are/are inspired by (1) Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and (2) from an actual Jiddish poem, if I recall correctly. They totally convey the feeling of melancholy or Weltschmerz:
[Wild Silk - Sehnsucht](https://youtu.be/Sb3LBLBLAMk?feature=shared)
[Wild Silk - Mein Herz, ich will Dich fragen](https://youtu.be/KJkOCT8JPxg?feature=shared)
"Du Erkennst Mich Nicht Wieder" by Wir Sind Helden guts me every time.
"Darf Ich Das Behalten" is a close contender.
For less melancholy, more general existential crisis situations, "Was Hat Dich Bloß So Ruiniert" by Die Sterne is a solid choice.
"Gras" from Gerhard Gundermann. He was a brillant poet and songwriter from the GDR.
His work is always very emotional wothout being sentimental. Also very talented musicians within the Band "Die Seilschaft".
Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann by Nena:) Because firstly I love Nena and secondly it makes me feel about my future life in Germany not in an usual depressive way («I'm gonna fail» and so on), but in such a way that it'll happen somehow, somewhere and sometime. Also it reminds me of that time the last summer when I was reading a book by Lydia Hermann about her life during the repressions period in Russia and listening only to Nena's songs while reading, mostly to this one... Me and Lydia are from the same nation of Russian Germans and it's so incredibly nice that she spoke out for all the repressed Russian Germans who decided to remain silent. In general, in just gives me the feeling of hope mixed with some kind of the warm sadness...
A lot of recent stuff here, well I am an 80s teen. Many awesome tracks from the olden days...
[Spliff - Deja Vu](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygxU9EzjCnY) and [Carbonara](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s3MUYC4KXOg)
[Nina Hagen Band - TV-Glotzer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWzPcDtZZZo) (and yes the band here is also Spliff)
[Ideal - Blaue Augen](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56a_WEUhqIw) and [Eiszeit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzHpSeWW4EU)
[Extrabreit - Polizisten](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksTf1lfDRWo)
If you care for German lyrics, HRK is one of the great intellectual songwriters of the 80s:
[Heinz Rudolf Kunze - An nichts gewöhnt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFVd_lHdg2U)
During my 7 years of forced learning from my parents in a German immersion school in Ukraine (don't worry, I do not regret knowing this language), we listened to a lot of German music of course. But ones I can notably say are from Die Prinzen, Nena, and JORIS. More specifically, my favourites:
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Nena - nur geträumt
Nena - auf einmal warst du da
Die Prinzen - Millionär
Die Prinzen - es war nicht alles schlecht
Wilhelmine - drip
Peter Schilling - Major Tom
Andreas Bourani - alles nur in meinem kopf
That's all I could think about, there are more, but it would take too long
I wasn't quite able to shorten it to only one, but at least one per artist and only ones i didn't see mentioned yet.
J.B.O - "Bolle"
Knorkator - "Alter Mann"
dArtagnan - "Solang dein Blut"
Schandmaul - "Euch zum Geleit"
Saltatio Mortis & Blind Guardian - "Finsterwacht"
You're talking about recent pop/rock songs? If not, it's probably "Widmung" by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. That guy Franz Schubert also used to be somewhat famous for his songs
Among 20/21. Century singer songwriters, I would go with "Wenn der Sommer nicht mehr weit ist" by Konstantin Wecker
Most beautiful love song in German, in my opinion. Sounds like old, an out of date German, but it not that old.
On a Dutch documentary about German music there was once a singer named Maxim. Since then once in a while I put on his music to tickle meine Deutsche Sprache. His music is really approachable and understanding for ein Blöde Holländer wie ich. [https://www.youtube.com/@Maximmusicde](https://www.youtube.com/@Maximmusicde)
Schnappi -das kleine Krokodil
Suitable for all occasions, all audiences and makes you happy. Unless listened to repeatedly...
Easy lyrics, so one learns them fast and can sing along.
Ramstein "Deutschland" .... The Music Video goes under the skin ... If you're familiar with German history.
"Wie zuhause" - Alligatoah
A friend told me to listen to this song and think of a modern German bohemian rhapsody. I agree. The artist is incredibly good with juggling words, continuing phrases in the next line with a surprising and smart hook, combining different styles and make it look easy.
The text is about the backpacking travel culture and it's limited experiences the traveler can have.
Yes, this is exaggerated. But imo it's a good description to give, because that way an audience will know what to expect.
Edit: It's more the technical side of the song. Length, variance, a dance with words...
Learning German in high school back in Australia, our teacher uaed to get Bravo videos (hosted by Nina Hagen no less) that introduced me to die Toten Hosen .... fast forward many years to me at a punk festival, and they played. I was psyched and I swear, one of the few there that day that knew them.
And they killed ... Campino climbed the stage rigging and sang from on top of it. There was indeed a collective gasp ...
Apparently he now lives around the corner from us.
DTH definitiv! But far better than the songs you‘re suggested are in my opinion: Sascha, Europa, Willkommen in Deutschland, All die ganzen Jahre, Draußen vor der Tür
MFG - Fantastisches Vier
Du musst ein Schwein sein - die Prinzen
Schrei nach Liebe - Ärzte
Dieser Weg - Xavier Naidoo
Superheld - Rob und Chris
99 Luftballons - Nena
Vincent - Sarah Connor
Benzin im Blut - Akustikrausch
Many people mentioned wonderful songs and bands/artists like Wir sind Helden, Grönemeyer, Rio reiser/ton Steine Scherben, what i would like to add is. I little punkeier, but nice love song, Kanten bei love a, also Jennifer weißt and Peter maffey did a great popsong with Leuchtturm
It's gotta be either:
"Sylt" by Lolnein for being a song about raiding germanys richest Island with the "9-Euro-Ticket" (i.e. germanys Area51-Incident)
Or
"Feierabend" by Großstadtgeflüster (Just because "Ich kündige" is known anyways and the Song contains a lot of colourful sayings which make no sense in English like "Ich hol die Kuh nicht mehr vom Eis ich pump ihr Blei in Magen" - I won't get the cow from the Ice/ I'll pump it full with lead)
I cannot pick one, there are lots. Let me only pick some with great lyrics
Pur - Indianer
Pur - Abenteuerland

Falco - Out of the dark (I guess you mean German-speaking, not made in Germany)
You're not wrong, but I prefer Jeanny. That song always gives me goosebumps.
took years for me as a kid to realize that it's not "alles versaut" instead of "out of the dark"
Falco was austrian, the one without kangaroos.
That's why I said German-speaking. I know Falco was Austrian.
No he was from Trian. They say Aus Trian.
Only bad Austrians are really Austrian. The good ones are Germans.
City - Am Fenster. There are many more great German songs but nothing touches Am Fenster.
Ofc "Mehnersmoos - 3 Uhr Nachts"
Ah maaaan why?!!! Ohrwurm is back. Girlfriend is gonna hate me for singing this again.
bumm bumm, hüa

Its hard, because I like the lyrics of Grönemeyer's Songs very much, but oh boy do I dislike his singing. Sounds like constipation
Yeah. But he sells that one.
Blümchen - Herz an Herz 😄
Hörst du mich?
SOS

'Leev Marie' by Paveier is fun! Also 'Willst Du" by Alligatoah is good!
Seconding "Willst du" Though since it's pure satire, it might not work if you don't understand the text.
Ich bin kein Mann für eiiiiine Nacht <3
Kraftwerk - Das Model
"Du Erkennst Mich Nicht Wieder" by Wir Sind Helden guts me every time. "Darf Ich Das Behalten" is a close contender. For less melancholy, more general existential crisis situations, "Was Hat Dich Bloß So Ruiniert" by Die Sterne is a solid choice.
…Klassiker
Die Ärzte - Schrei nach Liebe
I loveeee that song
Falco - Der Komissar The very first German rap song, still a banger!

My personal fav is „hurra diese Welt geht unter“
Pisse - Fahrradsattel

Nena Said a Lot of stupid things during COVID, that may be why...
Liquido - Narcotic, the melody is so insanely catchy
Barbara's Rhabarberbar. Because it's fun and it's spreading, even to people who don't speak a word of German.

"Wie zuhause" - Alligatoah A friend told me to listen to this song and think of a modern German bohemian rhapsody. I agree. The artist is incredibly good with juggling words, continuing phrases in the next line with a surprising and smart hook, combining different styles and make it look easy. The text is about the backpacking travel culture and it's limited experiences the traveler can have.
All this while also making intrigueing statements about his own/the human psyche and kind of telling this story of a traveler.
Comparing it with Bohemian Rhapsody sounds totally exaggerated. Although, maybe for Germans, dunno.
Yes, this is exaggerated. But imo it's a good description to give, because that way an audience will know what to expect. Edit: It's more the technical side of the song. Length, variance, a dance with words...
