You are wrong for using the phrase gas station.

red-sparkles

Wtf is a gas station šŸ—£ļøšŸ—£ļøšŸ—£ļøšŸ”„šŸ”„šŸ”„

Humble_Incident_5535

I think it's a Seppo servo.

YogurtclosetTop1056

I didn't know Qld has service stations that only sell gas, wow you learn something every day. But then it is Qld they are a bit different. I thought all service stations sold gas and petrol.

MissLabbie

In Qld I saw the cops pull someone up for this, leaving a petrol station and crossing double lines.

HeadacheCentral

What state? In NSW, the road rule states #Double dividing line You can cross double unbroken lines to enter or leave the road by the shortest route. That includes going into driveways

PeterDuttonsButtWipe

Yes, I read this as I was annoyed about the double line crossing in Sydney when I moved over but then was surprised to see it legal when I read up. Now I do it every day :)) Edit: Thanks for that downvoter :) Iā€™d rather save 10 minutes of driving time for school drop off and crossing legally those double lines than worrying about you. Have a nice night :)

MikhailxReign

I have the similar argument about going 150.

snowboardmike1999

Similar story here. The first few days I drove in NSW, I was very strict on not crossing the double white lines. For example when exiting somewhere e.g. a car park I would always turn left and find somewhere to do a U-turn, or go a different route. But double whites are really common and it becomes a pain in the ass, so was relieved to find that rule is not actually a rule.

nugeythefloozey

I almost got cleaned up by this rule when I moved up to NSW. I was walking across the driveway of my local servo (which I didnā€™t get petrol from because of the double lines), so I didnā€™t do a proper shoulder check. You learn fairly quickly after a speeding p-plater in a ute nearly flattens you

HeadacheCentral

The fact that you *can* cross them doesn't remove the responsibility on the driver to make sure there's no pedestrian crossing the driveway. Not much comfort when you're the pedestrian who got hit, though

Parenn

I used to turn right across a double line to get into my (now ex-)girlfriendā€™s flatā€™s parking area. I did get rear-ended by someone doing it; insurance said it was all the other driverā€™s fault.

bl4nkSl8

Aw shit, sorry to that one driver I once didn't allow into traffic because I thought it would be illegal for you to do so... I was not in the wrong legally, but I was definitely unhelpful...

StripedBadger

Got to be honest: that rule drives me nuts, because this is what the one-dotted-on-unbroken line combo is *for*.

bl4nkSl8

Wouldn't that be for overtaking as well though?

StripedBadger

Depends on how long the dots are there for.

rysch

Uh, no! At least not in WA or NSW (I canā€™t see where you might live.) The one-broken-one-solid line combo is *for* letting you cross to overtake on the solid-line-side if youā€™re on the broken-line-side. Donā€™t try that with a double solid line. [WA and NSW Road Rules](https://i.imgur.com/YcsZiIl.png)

AddlePatedBadger

No, the one dotted one unbroken combo is for overtaking. I can't speak for NSW, but don't recall ever seeing a road in Victoria with double white lines that did not have a short complete break in the lines at any place in which a right turn can be made (whether it be a driveway or other road). For example: [https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.5769876,145.6343635,3a,75y,238.63h,90.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sMGjDBYlx20xVKe5rwyVEng!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu](https://www.google.com/maps/@-37.5769876,145.6343635,3a,75y,238.63h,90.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sMGjDBYlx20xVKe5rwyVEng!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205409&entry=ttu)

LordYoshi00

Yes, you are wrong. We don't have gas stations in Australia.

wombatlegs

They do sell LPG though.

mypal_footfoot

You know what they mean, dickhead. Donā€™t be pedantic.

DeeJuggle

This guy beeps at cars turning right.

StripedBadger

Youā€™re new to reddit are you?

KittySpanKitty

What state are you in? You can in NSW.

snowboardmike1999

NSW

KittySpanKitty

Then it was legal. Unfortunately, most road users in NSW don't understand this road rule.

DeeJuggle

Some are just angry & impatient even if it is legal.

whatwhatinthewhonow

In fairness, driving in Sydney will make anyone angry.

[deleted]

Best to use public transport in Sydney

snowboardmike1999

First time in Sydney I admit, I did not know what a "Transit lane" was. I assumed it meant buses and taxis so I stayed out of them (much to the annoyance of other drivers). Turns out it's just what we in the UK call a 2+ lane and I could have driven in them because I was with the missus.

TotesYay

Is it? I saw a cop the other day book someone for it. Maybe there was more to the story.

KittySpanKitty

There might have been a no right turn sign

capeasypants

What's a gas station, mate?

No_pajamas_7

It's where Americans go to break wind.

[deleted]

Smile and wave

BrightBrite

"Gas station"??

Emergency_Resolve748

Ignore the ignorant pillock almost Aussies are shit drivers and that gives for all states. Yiu were holding him up as he's a VIP. Very important prickĀ

DeeJuggle

I always try to remind myself that not all drivers are shit. Most are actually ok, it's just that all the shit ones stick out & get noticed. Also because of the way the shit ones drive differently to all the normal people (ending up faster or slower than the average traffic), we all get a chance to see more of them. A normal driver making normal progress down the road doesn't catch up to or get caught up by all the other normal drivers, so you don't get a true sense of how many there really are. I *try* to remind myself of this to help with my sanity. Doesn't work all the time though.

HedgehogPlenty3745

What the fuck is a ā€˜gas stationā€™ mate?

chicknsnotavegetabl

Only problem, as usual, is morons ignorant of the actual rules.

No_pajamas_7

Yep bloke went all road-rage on my daughter the other day in a car park because he thought she was going the wrong way. It was two way. He wanted her to drive through a KFC to get to somewhere in the complete opposite direction. Dickhead probably gets angry with everyone when he in fact is wrong.

RolandHockingAngling

Yes. Double continuous dividing lines If you are on a road with 2 continuous lines (double lines) down the middle, you must: stay to the left of the lines at all times drive as close to the left side of the road as you can. You are not allowed to cross over these lines for any reason, unless you have to avoid an obstruction* or to overtake a bicycle rider when there is a clear view ahead and it is safe to do so. If itā€™s not safe you need to wait until you find a suitable place to pass. You can't overtake (except a bicycle rider as described above), turn, or enter or leave the road across double lines. Continuous double dividing lines that are wider apart may look different, but the road rule remains the same. https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/road-rules/a-to-z-of-road-rules/road-markings

Variation909

Depends on the state. In NSW this is allowed: ā€œYou can cross double unbroken lines to enter or leave the road by the shortest route.ā€ ā€œThe NSW Roads and Maritime Services state that drivers are allowed to cross a single or double line if the driver wants to enter or leave a property "by the shortest route". For example, it is legal to turn right over dividing lines when exiting a petrol station or shopping centre - unless there is a sign specifically stating you can't.ā€

link871

You can turn right across double continuous lines in NSW, NT and WA, nowhere else.

RolandHockingAngling

OP hasn't given a state...

Retard_On_Tapwater

Nsw it's been answered up here ^

Simple_Meat7000

Was there a round about within a few hundred metres you could have used? There is one petrol station (at least) I know of where people will regularly do this and block traffic rather than use the round about.

RollaCoastinPoopah

File a hurt feelings report at the police station.

snowboardmike1999

Don't give a shit about hurt feelings. Give a shit about potentially improving my driving.

One-Attempt-5703

We got pinged for this in Echuca Vic. Itā€™s legal in WA but not all states. We proved it law here and the fine was squashed. We were told in Vic you have to keep driving until there is a dotted white line e. I. wa that could be a 15 min or longer drive lol

Toemuncher696

Donā€™t be a cunt and just drive to the next U turn spot

link871

This wasn't the BP service station in Mortdale? It is the only place I've seen an official "No right turn" sign with "into service station" sign added underneath.

snowboardmike1999

There was no "No right turn" sign

Variation909

They have added them outside Frango and chargrill Charlieā€™s on the Lyons road chicken corridor as there were huge queues of tradies blocking flow in both directions at lunch times lol

Hedgiest_hog

You wouldn't be wrong for turning. Were they oncoming traffic and did you time it poorly, forcing them to decelerate not to hit you? Or if it was the car behind, are you sure your brake lights and rear indicators are working?

snowboardmike1999

The beeping car was behind me. There was really no reason for them to beep me (I indicated well in advance, all my lights work, I slowed down reasonably for the turn, and I positioned properly at the centre line, etc). The only thing I can think of is they wrongly thought that you cannot turn across double whites

KittySpanKitty

My boss is one of these people. My dad was a driving examiner, we learnt road rules before the alphabet. Doesn't matter how many times I google it and send it to her, she still won't believe me.

DeeJuggle

Even if they knew it was legal for you to turn right, some people are just angry impatient idiots that lash out without thinking. (For further evidence see reddit comments)

throwhoto

Other than you stopping unexpectedly, and I bet holding up all traffic in one direction while you wait for a break in the other. You arenā€™t meant to turn right there

snowboardmike1999

> You arenā€™t meant to turn right there read the other replies, it's allowed

throwhoto

Youā€™re leaving the road of course there wonā€™t be a sign retard

snowboardmike1999

I genuinely have no idea what you are trying to say. You said "you arenā€™t meant to turn right there". How do you know that? There are no signs saying no right turn, and the double broken white lines do not prohibit a right turn. So why not make a right turn?

marooncity1

Double white line is no right turn. Doesn't need a sign. Go past and come back if you need. Not hard.

snowboardmike1999

> Double white line is no right turn. Doesn't need a sign Really? I thought it's allowed.

DeeJuggle

Allowed in NSW. Not allowed in Vic. Don't know about other states.

thumpingcoffee

You arenā€™t allowed to cross a double unbroken line

snowboardmike1999

read the other replies, you are allowed in NSW

throwhoto

A lot of the time there is a safety reason why itā€™s a double white line, even if itā€™s not immediately apparent to you.

link871

You can turn right across double continuous lines in NSW, NT and WA; nowhere else.

throwhoto

Just because you can, does it mean you should? If itā€™s next to a gas station so heā€™s probably at a busy road and close to a roundabout

link871

I agree. I never understand the selfishness of people holding up peak hour traffic while they wait to turn right into their own driveway. Just go around the block and come back for the left turn

snowboardmike1999

For example?

Retard_On_Tapwater

Where'd you learn to drive cunt, Alice Springs?

RepeatInPatient

You must be kidding. What part of double lines don't you understand? You are a serious accident waiting to happen.

snowboardmike1999

I hope this is sarcasm.

Sea-Obligation-1700

You can't turn out across incoming traffic on a double line in NSW. I've been booked for that before.

snowboardmike1999

> You can't turn out across incoming traffic on a double line in NSW You can't turn out across incoming traffic on any normal road, regardless of double line/single line/dashed line, so that's a bit of an odd point to make
