They buy preshucked oysters and have them in a walk in in a big tub. When people order raw oysters they put them in the shells they kept and use over and over and over and over…
Truly vile.
Royal house is part of a pretty lame restaurant group where all the food has been “dumbed down” for the general tourist palate. However I’m sure the oysters are ok there but there’s also so many better places.
On your list I’d say Felix’s.
Don’t do Oceana. Really is one of the worst restaurants in the city. They pay a lot of money to have hotels and such advertise to tourists.
Thanks! I'm asian and I definitely need flavor and seasonings in my food. 🤣 No thanks dumbing down for the general palate. Maybe we just save our $$ and go to Dragos on a different day?
Lol sure but ot be clear this is dress code & reservations required fine dining. I'm not familiar enough to know if there's a slightly more casual bar area situation but it's still a leap from everything else OP listed including budget even if they do only have oysters at the bar.
It might still be what they end up wanting, just wanted to make the asterisk clear.
Only place we go if we are in the quarter is Felix's. The guys who shuck at the bar are hilarious. So if you go, try and snag a seat at the bar.
If you're outside of the quarter, Luke in CBD is good. And Mosquito Supper Club uptown is amazing (you don't need reservations to sit at the bar or outside for oysters).
I can recommend Cooter Browns, which is on the St Charles (green) streetcar line. It's a bit of a ride but they are a great place, lots of beer on tap, very friendly. Be aware that it is a sport bar close to 3 universities and super popular place to watch games, so if that isn't your scene go when it is less busy.
Not on the recycling list but amazing is MRB in the Quarter. Not Mr. B's, MRB which stands for Mississippi River Bottom. Just off Decatur on St Philip. Their chargrilled oysters are just delicious. I don't usually even like oysters and these are so good.
I'd feel it out and see how busy it is in the quarter, and if you don't want to wait, definitely make the walk (not far) to Luke's in CBD. There are great restaurants in CBD.
I'd only do Mosquito for oysters if you plan on being uptown already.
If you're downtown, walk to Seaworthy in the CBD for raw oysters. All wild caught, and they used to have an excellent happy hour, don't know if that's still a thing.
Currently in NOLA and found this thread bc I had the same question. At this very moment, I’m sitting at Felix’s bc of some of these recommendations and can give it extremely high praise.
The Char-Grilled ones are insanely good
yes, 100% agreed! we went to another place (Bazin's Seafood, we were randomly walking around and stopped in) and while good, Felix's was hands down tastier. We did the sampler at Felix's as well, but no show stoppers there. Would 100% go back for chargrilled oysters.
So I haven't been there in years and I know this place looks like a tourist trap, but as of a few years ago, Creole Cookery had hands down the best oysters in the quarter. Can't say if it's still the same however.
I’m guessing this will be downvoted by locals, but I visit Nola 3-4 times a year, and imo the grilled oysters @ Creole House in the CBD are really good.
I love Antoine’s! They invented the oysters Rockefeller and they are very different than what you get at other places. It’s expensive so I like to go to during happy hour.
highly recommend branching out from the quarter and heading uptown to katie’s for killer chargrilled oysters and crab cakes. go at off hours or you’ll be in for a hefty wait.
*NOT Oceana
Oceana shouldn't even be on a list of 'best' or 'good' anything
Best place to avoid.

This can't be true... can it?
It was when I did a bar training there like 12 -15 years ago. I’ll never ever forget it. And I’ve heard similar stories even more recently than that.
It is, and they’re not the only ones who do it
🤢
That's so fucked
I liked it but in the way one likes Domino's at 3AM when nothing else is open.

So glad to see Pascal's Manale on the list! I love going there
Thanks for this. I bookmarked it for my yearly trip to NOLA
Thank you for this. it's amazing and will pick places from this list.
Felix's gets my vote

Please just go to Peche - it’s a little bit out of the quarter, but so good. The next step closer is Luke - they have a great oyster happy hour.
I like Luke on Saint Charles.
I second this. I used to go during happy hour all the time. Super duper tasty and a very cute atmosphere. Great cocktails too
Revolution has the best oysters in the quarter. Sit at the bar, get death by gumbo and some oysters.

Oysters and a beer at MRB is pretty solid
Do you deserve the best oysters?
🤣🤣🤣🤣 probably not?
Fives deserves a mention
$17 cocktails and $5 oysters? Yikes.
Expensive no doubt. Best variety of oysters in the quarter.
*if you're rich
Those prices though!! lol
More than that for aure

Do you think it's better to skip oysters in FQ and spend money elsewhere? I know FQ is touristy and I think we have enough time to explore outside.

Dragos, just outside the quarter but easily walkable
Red fish grill BBQ oysters are one of the best things in the quarter.
I enjoyed Acme

My friends and I went to Nola a couple weeks ago and had charbroiled oysters at Morrows, Dragos, and Brennans - Morrows was the favorite!

Dragos
